Any chance…

If you want to see this team win, dont go to a game where we play a top 10 team.
Right-O. I went to plenty of top ten wins in the 70’s, 80’s and a few in the 90’s ….. but, those things no come around here no mo! It’s not the recruiting or talent pool. Sir James just doesn’t get heads in the right place before or during the games. Top of this tread > yeah. Damn right …. surely Cael could distill some of his wisdom and help the FB guys get over the hump.

I’d prefer Cael to just distance himself from that clown.

distilled wisdom…..maybe this is why Bordo seems so intelligent.

Can she get open more than 10 yards downfield?
Probably not. Now if Allar would wait a split second longer prior to checking down and going through his progressions, she might be open.

Bonnie might be able to help with Allar's mental approach, she might be Cael's best kept secret.

I really don’t think the OC did any favors at all for Allar to set him up for success. Quite the opposite, in fact.
I agree, the play calling was horrible for most of the game. When a good play was called, the pass was usually behind the receiver. All around bad day for the OC and QB. Sad thing is the OLine held up fairly well, they had a consistent running game, not great but good enough and they contained the pass rush.

If he were checking down so much, the RBs would have more than 1 catch today and more than 2 catches against Ohio State.

The receivers rarely run downfield routes, and only Lambert-Smith gets open with any regularity. Defensive coordinators have figured this out. This is also why they couldn't run against either team (outside of Allen's one long run today).

Allar's accuracy was pretty bad today. Which is probably footwork. At least he isn't playing Carson Wentz Hero Ball.

Despite all of that, the final margin was the 2 turnovers.

Football program hasn’t been elite for 3 decades and in all likelihood won’t ever be again.

Franklin certainly has his warts, yes, but unless they surprise with a hire the next guy is more likely shuffling deck chairs.

Combining football and wrestling since it is a wrestling board, you can have two approaches to coaching. You can establish an identity or underlying philosophy like Michigan has on offense. They are a power running team and that throws off of play action. You then have the Cael philosophy of taking what ever an individual is good at and letting them use it, improving it while being fundamentally sound.

The PSU offense, I have no idea what their philosophy is, what do they want to be? What the individuals do well, they don't seem to maximize. They have good running backs and don't use them or forget about them in the second half. Franklin says after the game that the play calling never let Allar get into a rhythm.

There isn't one thing, it is everything. Play calling is bad. Allar's mechanics fall apart in big games leading to poor throws. Receivers do not get open and do not make the big catch.

Then their is the current Iowa wrestling philosophy of grab the head, hand fight, push around the mat and hope for a stalling call. At least they have an identity!

Oh well. It is wrestling season, today will be a good day.

As for the game:

-Allar’s inexperience shows most in big games. As the announcers beat to death, the kid is only 19 and in his first season starting. I like to think he’ll grow out of it and better himself because of it by next year. His gives me that kind of impression.

-The defense is definitely elite, but even they only have so much in the tank. It’s hard to have gas in the tank late in the game when the offense is consistently going 3 and out.

-Yurcich and Franklin’s tendency to turtle up and/or attempt to get cute rears its ugly head in big moments. Last year, Yurcich played Clifford like he was a pocket passer when he’s definitely more of an RPO guy. This year, he’s got Allar who’s more of a pocket passer and still uses a vanilla play call more often than not.

-On the whole, Cael may have to sit down with Franklin and review some psychological tips and tricks to get the players/staff to not clam up in big moments. A hallmark of Cael’s wrestlers has been to compete free and loose whether it’s a big moment or not. Franklin hasn’t figured out how to do that. His guys all try to do too much and they don’t make it work as a result.

Bingo! I was a frosh in 66 - attended over 250 FB games (lost count) over the years. I’ve gotten old & grumpy over our football program. Too much flash & crash! Slowly in the 90’s … wrestling became my favorite as it provides heartfelt real drama in lieu of the manufactured hype of college football. Cael; …. his demeanor rubs off on our guys …. and yet …. he provides the freedom for each to be his own man! Certainly Sir James could and should learn from the master.

Yep. That what my friend kept saying all game. What is this teams identity on offense. ..They have none.

My fear is that Allar is more like Hackenberg. Franklin’s offensive philosophy did not mesh with Hack. Allar can run better, so, there’s that.

Dudes, let’s give JF a little slack here. UM might be the best team this year. We won’t know for sure until the season is over. But we didn’t do so badly against them considering how they have been trouncing everyone else.

Michigan could be the best team in the country, (I doubt it), however, when you lose and your offense looks scared doing so that is a huge problem. Had they lost 30 - 21 and looked like they had a clue of what they were trying to do on offense, that would be different. When the games were within one score against Ohio State and Michigan, the PSU offense scored a whopping 15 points combined. The sad thing is that the defense had only given up 30 points when the game was within one score. The D gave up late TDs to put the game out of reach when Franklin went for it on 4th and long deep in the PSU end of the field.

I think Michigan gets beat. They run a power running game with play action passing with decent receivers. Someone will take away the power running game which hurts their passing game and their receivers are not good enough to consistently win battles.

Michigan is better on offense than they showed against us. McCarthy is good and so are the receivers. Their only weakness may be their OL, which is surprising for Michigan. But probably only against an elite DL.

Once they made a couple of adjustments to our running game, they basically shut down their offense to eliminate the risk our defense posed. They knew they had enough points and basically laughed at our offense the entire second half. They determined that the risk of our defense making a big play if they put the ball in the air was greater than the risk of our offense putting up any points. Pretty embarrassing.

agree Dice. Sometimes it looks like there aren't multiple routes run down field with a purpose. Canada's offense looks similar.

At least we **could** get into FG range, so they didn't take an intentional safety halfway thru the 4th to make it a 2-pt game,

Not that I was at the other game ...

I know no one is really in the mood to praise the football team at this juncture--but I have to say, I've really really enjoyed watching us play defense this year. Yes, they allowed some chunk runs yesterday, but no way either of our two losses were nearly as close without their efforts. Shoot--they almost scored the difference-making points for us vs the bucknuts. Overall, this is the best PSU defensive unit/scheme we've had in quite a few years. I'll be sad when Manny moves on, it's been fun.

You mean teams in the top ten to draw people to the game. The reality is none of the January wins were against a legit top ten team.
LOL, Utah beat vaunted USC twice last year, the 2nd time by 3 TDs, but keep believing they're a school that draws in fans.

Drawing fans based on an overrated ranking only. Vaunted USC LOL.

You can lol all you want. USC was going to the final 4 playoffs if they had beat Utah in the PAC 12 championship game. USC was ranked #4 at the time. Utah was a legit top 10 team last season.

I think that wrestling should follow the lead of D1 football. Instead of everyone having to suffer through grueling qualifying tournaments and a brutal 3 day national tournament, the top 8 wrestlers in each weight class should be chosen by polls and they will wrestle a tournament that starts at the quarter finals. The losers will all be eligible to wrestle back for final placing.

Also Utah is such a market draw that B10 never considered them in expansion.

There is only one grueling qualifying tournament, the rest are glorified Joe Blow memorial types.

Polls and eye test - you’ve got Tom Ryan’s attention!
