Started having some pretty bad pain back around the beginning of January. Got it looked at in Feb. and I had texbook signs and an old MRI showed them from 2-3 years ago. Had laparoscopic surgery at Penn two weeks ago. Didnt take any pain meds and was literally almost pain free after 1-2 days.

Now one side is starting to hurt. Doc says I may have tweaked or just stretched it. Can anyone share their recovery experience?

Mine could "act up" for about a year afterward, if I stretched the wrong way. After that 9-11 months, it was fine. But this was 25 years ago, I'm sure the surgery is different now.

I've had both sides done at different times. Only one side was done laparoscopic and it hurt mostly because of the gas dissipating that they pump into you. Yes, you've probably overworked the area, it's easy to do. I wouldn't worry too much unless it gets worse after rest instead of better. A little pain intermittently for the next few months wouldn't be uncommon.

I had both sides repaired about 5 yr's ago. My recovery experience was similar -- popped a couple Advil & was quickly pain-free.
I haven't had any recurrence as you describe. Wish you luck w/ that.

I had an open repair about 4 years ago. Didn't have any pain right from the start, didn't take a single pain pill and was pretty much back to normal 36 hours after surgery. The only weird thing that lasted for a bit was that just below my incision, it was slightly numb for a few months and there was no feeling. I could pinch my skin as hard as I wanted, couldn't feel it. Now I can, but it "hurts" about 3 inches away from where I pinch.

Wow -- I see the surgery has come a LONG way since I had mine repaired as a PSU soph in 1979. Popped it lifting weights as a HS senior and didn't act - it got much worse over the next two years and I received a 4 inch scar to remember it by...

I had traditional inguinal surgery about ten years ago. The doc used mesh, his preference. I had diminishing soreness at the incision area for about ten days. It’s been fine since.

I also had one at Penn. Call the Doctors office and give them them an update. They will be happy to take your call.

I had right inguinal hernia laproscopic surgery years ago. The worst part for me was that the anesthesia made me nauseous. I had the dry heaves for a while after I woke up. Talk about putting the mesh to the test right away...

Had surgery about 15 years ago. Popped it fielding a grounder at shortstop and came up throwing across my body. Thought I pulled a groin at first. Doc used a mesh. Had substantial pain for almost a week when getting up or sitting down (anything requiring abdominal muscles). Definitely had some pain here and there when I got back into normal activity. For probably 5-7 years I would occasionally get some throbbing in the area, but haven't had that in a while. Good Luck

Curious if anyone here who had hernia surgery had nerve damage? It was odd how after two weeks one side felt normal and the other hurt? Now, 4.5 months later, the pain on one side is pretty debilitating and I'm going to see the doc on Monday. His asst thinks its nerve damage, especially since lidocaine patches seem to lessen the pain. Had a CT scan and nothing else showed up.

No issue with nerve damage fortunately. Good luck!

I can’t share any experience, but I wish I could share Weird Al’s Living with a Hernia.
