The podcast with Ben Askren and Tommy Rowlands? They had Chael Sonnen on. Listen to the Gabe Dean stuff after about minute 55. Wow! That's a bold claim about Dean on PEDs - I hadn't even given that a moment's thought. Pretty out of control flippant charge. It's one thing if it's just goons sitting on bar stools, but just putting that out in the public is really irresponsible.

It was during a brief discussion on the NCAAs fairly fragmented drug testing policies.

That said, they have some interesting segments. Askren mentioned that Mark Hall was put on his back at Cheesehead but went on to win 24-16

Askren also said Rasheed is "not a world beater," which I think is an improvement over his preseason claim that PSU has "nothing" at 165. Maybe by March, he'll acknowledge that Rasheed "ain't half bad."

Nearly all of the reckless talk about PED use was from Sonnen, who was their guest this week. Dean, Kerry McCoy and some of the others he called out by name should have a talk with their attorneys.

Here's a picture of Mark Hall at Cheesehead. Must have been a crazy match.

Must have been the semifinal match at Cheesehead. Hall had a pin at 1:31 in his 1st match. Then he faced Nick Knutson (New Prague HS -- think that's Missouri), and defeated him 24-16. He then pinned Brian Krasowski (Carl Sandburg) in the finals at 3:10.

I haven't found a video of the Hall - Knutson match.

You must have missed the part where Sonnen said all the great Iowa teams were juicers. "Farm boys don't look like that".

I had to rewind to make sure Sonnen had really named Gabe Dean. As defamation claims go, it's borderline. An allegation of PED use against any athlete is, I think, per se defamatory, which would be key because it's easier to show damages against a money-making pro athlete than a college/amateur athlete. But you don't need to show damages in "per se" defamation, they're presumed.

Sonnen's defense would be that he was stating opinion and speculating; not making a factual allegation, as he would have no way of knowing for certain, having no personal contact with Dean. The sum of his allegation seemed to be "have you seen Gabe Dean lately as compared to a few years ago?" It'd be more damning to Sonnen if he alleged having actually seen Dean taken PEDs, or knew a dealer, etc.

Dean's response to that would be that reasonable listeners have no way of discerning fact from speculation in Sonnen's statement. The bar for defamation against public figures (Dean is probably a "limited-purpose" public figure) is high--"actual malice"--meaning that Dean would likely have to show that Sonnen knew the statement was false before he made it, and intended to harm Dean's reputation. Which probably isn't the case. Nevertheless, Dean's reputation is harmed if anyone credits Sonnen's statements (and some will), and there are enough arguments on both sides that it wouldn't shock me to see lawyers involved.

I believe it's on Intermat, but it's not free & I don't have a subscription. I found the photo on Facebook.

EDIT: Never mind. Video of his quick pin in the finals is on Track (subscription required). The video of his 24-16 win in the semis is not.

That presupposes, of course, that he is clean. A lot of athletes make a big stink about filing suit in these situations, by don't do so because discovery might turn up some not so favorable facts. They'll back down claiming they don't want to drag their family though it, etc.

Disclaimer - not intimating anything about Dean. Anyway, I thought it interesting as Rowlands is a Buckeye and there were tons of rumors about Nick Heflin after he jumped weights and looked like the Incredible Hulk

To his credit, Rowlands didn't throw anyone under the bus. Sonnen accused Mark and Dave Schultz, the Wilps brothers, Kerry McCoy, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, the Gable-era Iowa teams, the Iranians, and the Russians. If there's a problem with PEDs in college wrestling, it seems like there should be a better way to call it out than naming names when you don't have any kind of evidence.

Actually, that's not necessarily the case. While it's true that "truth" is a defense defamation, the inquiry more relevant to discovery would be what Sonnen knew when he made the statement than simply whether Dean took PEDs. Often it's the case that those inquiries merge, but not always. A more extreme example illustrates why: Joe alleges that Bob is a child pornographer. Bob sues Joe. Joe asks in discovery to see every image on Bob's computer, internet history for past 10 years, etc. Court would say hell no to that discovery. Question gets closer if Bob, say, worked for Joe and they shared a computer. Here, Sonnen doesn't have much in the way of actual knowledge about Gabe Dean, unless he does and just didn't mention it on air.

Might be easier to just list those Sonnen didn't accuse.

Tom , just for your information and know you had no idea just letting you know. New Prague HS is in Minnesota. The same HS that Travis Trutt went to before he transferred to Jackson County Central. He made AA at Okl.

Also same high school as Griffin Parriott who is committed to Purdue and has scrapped with Manville on a few occasions
