Army

Army had an 8-3 dual record with all of their losses coming against top 25 teams at the time (Lehigh, North Carolina and Wyoming). The Black Knights capped off the dual meet season with their 3rd straight win against Navy. Army finished first, edging out Lock Haven, in the Black Knight Invite and finished 8th at Midlands. At the EIWA championships, Army had their second best point total ever and finished 4th behind Lehigh, Cornell and Princeton.

Army qualified 4 wrestlers out of the EIWA championships (Weiland, McCormick, Harvey, Stewart) and secured 3 more as at-large bids (Chalifoux, Shie, Caywood). They actually came fairly close to qualifying all 10 wrestlers. While Army didn’t have any AAs, they did improve upon 2018’s results finishing 36th with 7.5 points (42nd with 4.5 points in 2018).

The Black Knights return 9 of their 10 starters, losing just Rocco Caywood. Army has not yet released their 19/20 schedule.

125
Trey Chalifoux (Sr) <Father Ryan, TN>

Chailfoux qualified for the NCAAs for the first time, going 21-15 on the season and placed 6th at the EIWA Championships (4 allocations). Trey received an at-large bid and was the last one in as the 33 seed. He won his pigtail before losing the next two. <Bonus: 11.1%, RPI: .574>

133
Lane Peters (Jr) <Claymont, OH>
Matthew Marino (Jr) <Great Valley, PA>
Andrew Wert (Fr) <Central Dauphin, PA>

Peters went 18-17 overall and placed 5th at the EIWA Championships (4 allocations). He did have 3 wins against eventual qualifiers: 19-Terao (American), 32-Turner (Oregon St), 33-Trampe (Bing). Trampe won the rematch against Peters in the EIWA championships which kept him out of the NCAAs. <Bonus: 22.9%, RPI: .540> Marino went 5-5 last season including a 30 second pin of Peters. Wert went 12-4 for USMA Prep. He didn't wrestle any NCAA qualifiers.

141
Corey Shie (So) <La Salle, OH>

Shie went 27-16 overall and placed 4th at the EIWA Championships (3 allocations). He received an at-large bid and was the 29 seed, going 0-2 at the NCAAs. Shie had a couple of wins against other qualifiers, with the highlight being a pin in a rematch against eventual 11 seed Tristan Moran (Wisconsin). <Bonus: 34.9%, RPI: .597>

149
PJ Ogunsanya (So) <Oak Park-River Forest, IL>
Markus Hartman (So) <Barrington, IL>

Ogunsanya went 26-17 on the season and didn’t qualify for NCAAs. Much like Peters, Ogunsanya just missed qualifying after losing a rematch against Michael Sprague (American) and placing 6th at the EIWAs (5 allocations). Hartman went 19-7 last season split between 149 and 157. He didn’t have any wins against NCAA qualifiers.

157
Luke Weiland (Sr) <Seckman, MO>

Weiland qualified for the NCAAs for a second time, going 24-12 on the season and finished 4th at the EIWA Championships (6 allocations). He was the 20 seed and had a first round upset over #13 Jarrett Jacques (Missouri) before dropping two close matches against Alec Pantaleo and Zach Hartman (Bucknell). <Bonus: 30.6%, RPI: .623>

Cael McCormick (Sr) <Yorktown, IN>

McCormick went 19-10 on the season and qualified for the NCAAs for the first time by placing 2nd at the EIWA Championships (4 allocations). He had another first round upset for Army, defeating #9 seed Demetrius Romero (UVU) before losing his next two matches. <Bonus: 24.1%, RPI: .630>

174
Ben Harvey (Sr) <Indianapolis Cathedral, IN>

Harvey went 31-11 on the season and qualified for the NCAAs for the second time after placing 5th at the EIWA Championships (5 allocations). He had one of the more interesting runs in 2018 as he lost the initial pigtail and wrestled all the way back to the round of 12. This season he was seeded 22 and reeled off two straight upsets over #11 Lydy (Pur) and #6 McFadden (VT) before being pinned by Valencia and losing to #9 Skatza (Goophers) in the round of 12. <Bonus: 26.2%, RPI: .617>

Hopkins went 19-7 last season backing up Rocco Caywood and had several victories over NCAA qualifiers. <Bonus: 23.1%, RPI: .624>

Last season, outgoing senior Rocco Caywood went 25-8 overall and qualified for the NCAAs for a second time, needing an at-large bid after finishing 7th at EIWAs (6 allocations). He was the 12 seed at the NCAAs and went 0-2. (Dealing with an injury?)

Heavy

New Faces

Pasuik was a 3-time runnerup before winning the Ohio DII championship @160 his senior season. He is ranked #19 at 160 by InterMat.

As much a fan of the Army program as I am (along with Navy, all their wrestlers are just tough nuts), I am proud to say that CR South wrestlers most likely kept two of them from qualifying this year. As pointed out above, Zack knocked off Peters to bounce him in the qualifying match; but his CR South and Bing teammate Joey Doyle pinned Sullivan in the 5th place match at 285, which most likely kept Sullivan from qualifying via WC. As a wrestler that earned an allocation, finishing 1 spot out of the last qualifying spot would probably have gotten him in given who they gave the wildcards to. Doyle had a heck of a tournament, narrowing losing in OT in the qualifying match coming from the 8 or 9 seed I think

Coach Sil and Trap were mighty proud that day. Sorry for hijacking the thread, but always gotta give my Hawks some pub when they earn it.

That's not hijacking at all. I love hearing backstories like that. Thanks for sharing.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Andrew Wert take 133 from Peters. Super kid who actually could end up an AA some day.

Thanks again, Cali. Interested in a couple of the military academies :)...Army has a solid team.
