I understand the Daily Collegian is student run, but there seems to have been no research completed for the "What's next.." article. Or maybe they have info that I am missing. NL was great this season but listing him as the most probable to replace Zain seems a bit odd to me. NL looked to be short on horsepower at 141 sometimes, moving up next year would seem to just make the situation worse. Also no mention of Verk at all?

Clearly the Daily Collegian writer hasn't been "in the room". No mention of Berg or Verk. They can't all be zingers I suppose.

Or any math. PSU won 3 titles in Zain's five years and 7 of the last 8 ... can't be both.

This is the first I've seen that Spey article. Always dug his charting skillz, pre-Flo to the present. Dug this one using their individual rankings through the season to project Team Points.

He does a lot of great work and is a great twitter follow, really entertaining guy who loves wrestling across the spectrum.

However, I'm not a fan of his loosey-goosey Y axes that often show more of a change than reality. 125 to 114 looks visually like they lost > 50% of their team points! This one isn't so bad, but the one with the NCAA tournament ratings over time did not represent the actual data well at all.

One takeaway from that chart: at nationals, PSU outperforned its season-high projection -- by 15 pts.

I'd love to see similar analysis (NCAA points vs. projections) for other teams. Guessing Ohio State's would be comparable.

Haha, absolutely fantastic geekdom!

appreciate the kind words my dudes, glad you enjoyed the season review graph. we'll be doing at least the rest of the time 5 in the ensuing weeks just in case you want to see more but of the non-PSU variety.

and you're right about the Y-axis, it can be problematic, but setting the min value at 0 would make for an unpublishable piece of content. behold!

see? it stinks. so, sorry not sorry about proper y-axis values, I will change them at will and never apologize!

/only half joking, it's worth keeping in mind of course sometimes rules must be broken!

"However, Martin had routinely had Nickal's number in the postseason, so a Nickal victory was anything but a safe bet."

The only Nits I usually pick are Cael's boys, but you could have constrained the Y axis from say 75 up to 145 to establish a range you could use for all 5 teams, establishing a baseline of comparison.

Yeah, agree, and he had Teasdale possibly going at 141? Just from reading info here and elsewhere, it sounds like 125 might be a tough cut for Gavin, but don't recall seeing projections about him wrestling at 141 his first season?

Agreed! Always tough to balance the Tufte-ian "graph the story" vs the "How to Lie With Statistics"-style "Always show the 0". Hence, my "This one isn't so bad".

Really, having the 100 (or close to it) as an axis makes this one look like an indexed chart and tells the story. The NCAA rating chart was really to compare the ratings over the course of the year, so I found not including the 0 to really lessen the value of that visual data.

If you are taking requests, I'd like to see the top 5 teams as spark lines with points +/- 100, I think that would be a killer chart to show the flow of the season.

I would like to think PSU is graduating Journalists a cut above the rest ... apparently not.
