Was just reading a quote from Bruce Pearl who took over an Auburn program where many have failed.
He just completed his third season, lost in the first round of the SEC Tournament to an awful Missouri team that had already fired its coach. He has not taken Auburn to the postseason yet.
As some of you know, Pearl had real success at Tennessee before a NCAA issue that he lied about cost him his job.
He was asked if next year was a critical year, if he felt he we in the hot seat. Here is the quote:
"Critical is when you're in the hospital and you're in critical condition. Our program is not in the hospital. It is not in critical condition. Our program is in a great position. If you have one of the best seasons that they've had in 14 years and you want to start talking to me about critical, then you've lost perspective on where this program has been, how it's valued and how it's judged. You just have. Our fan base does not feel that way... Our program is in really, really good shape."
Regardless of what you think of Pearl, he is a proven winner. The process of turning Auburn around has been slow for him despite quicker results in recruiting than Chambers had.
What struck me about the quote is that this is a successful coach who is measuring his success and progress at Auburn against Auburn's history, not his own history.
The same thing applies with Chambers. At least 15 wins for a 4th consecutive year is hardly an accomplishment at most programs, at Penn State however, that had never happened as a member of the Big Ten.
The future is bright, have to keep perspective and understand what we have been.
