B1G Special Teams Player of the Week

With the kickoffs, I watch to see where each kick lands. At the Blue and White game, they had a contest between the kickers to see who could kick to the designated spot on the field.
That spot is between the numbers and out of bounds and 4 yards deep in the end zone. The kid is pretty darn good at hitting that spot.

Gilliken had a good game also, although not as game changing as Barkley. Gilliken has been solid.

None of Gillikin's individual punts were as game changing as Barkley's KO return for a TD, but if you add them all up they might have had an even greater impact on the game. JMO.

I think solid is an understatement, he's been great and so have the coverage teams. For example, PSU currently averages 44.5 yards per punt and our net average is 43.1 yards, therefore we are allowing an average of only 1.4 yards per punt return. That is phenomenal. Aside from the field goal issues which are an obvious issue, the entire special teams unit has been outstanding so far.

Big Ten stats:
Gillikin is #3 in individual average yards per punt (44.4 yards).
Thompkins is #2 in individual punt return average (18.7 yards).
Barkley is #4 in individual KO return average (32.3 yards).
PSU is #1 in team net punting average (43.1 yards).
PSU is #1 in team net kickoff average (43.1 yards).
PSU is #3 in team KO returns average (30.9 yards).
PSU is #2 in team punt return average (16.8 yards).
