Barb Doran is bringing in Donna Shalala to Board retreat

She can fit in an overhead storage bin if need be.
l will limit my commentary to her tenure at University of Miami.

Where she did a tremendous, superior job - and by comparison makes Donkey Rodney look like a shoeshine boy.
I agree. Plus, she can fit in an overhead bin for easy travel.

How many of the OG will phone-in or no-show for this one? These egomaniacs don't want to hear someone tell them just how stupid they were and still are! Will this be open to the public? I would drive to SC just to see the look on the faces of Masser, Eckel and Dambly!!

When we first learned of this retreat, I of course assumed the old-guard shitbags wouldn't attend. Alice Pope posted here at the time that they would attend. I have the utmost respect for Alice, and I'm sure they are expected to attend, but I just can't see them all being there.

http://www.miami.edu/index.php/news/releases/statement_from_president_donna_e_shalala-2/

Over the two and a half years since the University of Miami first contacted the NCAA enforcement staff about allegations of rules violations, the NCAA interviewed dozens of witnesses, including current and former Miami employees and student-athletes, and received thousands of requested documents and emails from the University. Yet despite our efforts to aid the investigation, the NCAA acknowledged on February 18, 2013 that it violated its own policies and procedures in an attempt to validate the allegations made by a convicted felon. Many of the allegations included in the Notice of Allegations remain unsubstantiated.

Now that the Notice of Allegations has been issued, let me provide some context to the investigation itself:

--Many of the charges brought forth are based on the word of a man who made a fortune by lying. The NCAA enforcement staff acknowledged to the University that if Nevin Shapiro, a convicted con man, said something more than once, it considered the allegation “corroborated”—an argument which is both ludicrous and counter to legal practice.

--Most of the sensationalized media accounts of Shapiro’s claims are found nowhere in the Notice of Allegations. Despite their efforts over two and a half years, the NCAA enforcement staff could not find evidence of prostitution, expensive cars for players, expensive dinners paid for by boosters, player bounty payments, rampant alcohol and drug use, or the alleged hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gifts given to student-athletes, as reported in the media. The fabricated story played well—the facts did not.

--The NCAA enforcement staff failed, even after repeated requests, to interview many essential witnesses of great integrity who could have provided first-hand testimony, including, unbelievably, Paul Dee, who has since passed away, but who served as Miami Athletic Director during many of the years that violations were alleged to have occurred. How could a supposedly thorough and fair investigation not even include the Director of Athletics?

--Finally, we believe the NCAA was responsible for damaging leaks of unsubstantiated allegations over the course of the investigation

I would rather see a flamethrower brought to the retreat.....but Donna S may be easier to get through the security screening :) .

In all seriousness though, kudos and thanks to Barb D for making the effort to inform and communicate wrt the goings-on at the "retreat". Realistically, I doubt if a joint visit from Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Gandhi, and Buddha would have much impact on "improving governance"....

We know what the problems are - we've known that for a LONG time...and we know that the Scoundrels cannot/will not be unseated from power without being forced out (Exhibit A: Reform Proposal A+ LOL). Reason and logic do not unseat Despots.

But every effort at getting the word out to the broader audience should increase support for the types of changes outlined in the Yudichak Bill, or the proposal put forward way back when by Barb D (back before the Reform Proposal A+ Cram Down).

Good luck Barb D...I am sure you have all of our support. Please keep us in the loop. Thank You.

That would get my donations to start flowing back to the school, for sure.

Introductory press conference:

"Thank you, thank you. I am honored to be president of Penn State. It is my goal in the next year to restore Penn State's pride, honor Joe Paterno, and otherwise kick ass. In the interest of openness and transparency, I now will take all of your questions."

Can the alumni-elected trustees orchestrate an overthrow of barron and immediately hire Shalala?
The Alumni Elected (AND the Wolf appointed - who have this far been on the same page), can't do squat unless/until the Scoundrels' stranglehold is broken.

That won't happen unless/until the Scoundrels are FORCED out (In enough numbers to eliminate their majority).
That won't happen unless/until a LARGE populist force is brought to bear.

This retreat - in and of itself - will do squadoosh. The Scoundrels will show up, bloviate, pat themselves on the back for ALL OF THE TREMENDOUS WORK THEY have done to promote improved governance....and it will be business as usual.
You can ABSOLUTELY make book on that......that is what the Scoundrels WILL do....and everyone - especially the Elected/Wolf Trustees - should KNOW that and be prepared for it.

IF, however, the Elected/Wolf-appointed trustees use this occasion to Publicize/Broadcast the horrendous situation under which PSU is (and has been) "governed"....perhaps there will be a positive impact.
That is the benefit we can hope to see from this "retreat".

Donna S seems like the right kind of person to be able to get her message heard. If she can't get some jerks to listen, nobody can.

I worked with Donna during the Clinton Administration at HUD. She was the head of Policy Development and Research. As I recall she was low key and kind of cute. She really changed over the last 35 years.

Message heard? By these guys? LOL

Ain't gonna' happen. BUT...if she can get the message OUT....therein lies the value.

Big IF at this point....no idea what her role will even be (or the role of any of the other participants)....but after years, and years, and years - with not one "convert" - its pretty clear that the "Road to Redemption" ain't through logical discourse and debate with a pack of Scoundrels.

Hey Apex, any updates on the timelines in your footer? The only 2016 court dates are in the Paterno case. Any info on the other cases moving forward?

I copied the dates from another poster just so people would be aware that these things are going on. I think many have no idea how much ongoing litigation is still going on and that the Sandusky tragedy is by no means over. I don't have any new dates. I'm sure someone on here does.

"I have made sure we have a blue-chip panel of speakers known for their independence and deep experience in governance, including Donna Shalala..."

Now that's pretty funny bringing in the CEO of the Clinton Foundation. Considering Donna was appointed HHS Secretary by Bill, she's about as independent a CEO as I am for the foundation that bears my own family's name.

”She showed the kind of leadership we sorely needed in our own struggles with the NCAA."

Please just stop! Donna didn't have the death penalty hanging over her head and less than 24 hours to make an institution altering decision. I will strongly argue that PSU's leadership acted courageously under extraordinarily difficult circumstances in dealing with the NCAA.

"I will be advocating for candidates because of what they know, not who they know, and for their ability to think independently and to ask tough, informed questions."

So tell me then Barb, why would you bring in a Donna Shalala who received multiple below market rate loans from Countrywide Financial because the corporation considered her friends of Angelo?

If there truly was a death penalty - and that has never been confirmed by the NCAA (Emmert, Ray), then the BoT would not have had an issue with it, because they wanted to distance themselves from the "football culture". And what better way than to simply eliminate football?

Let's say you are correct in how PSU leadership acted in the first 24 hours.

I will strongly argue that PSU leadership has acted with cowardice in the 24 months that have followed the first 24 hours.

I was wondering how long it would take Mr. Grey Poupon himself to show up.

I'm assuming then that your argument includes your dissident slate voting to approve approx $60M in settlements to individual victims.

Jeesus dude. You are pure blabber. Just stop. She stood up for da U against clearly illegal NCAA actions. Rodney could borrow some testicles from her. Go away.

Penn State didn't have the DP hanging over its head either. No one is buying that BS anymore. One thing that is correct ...........Miami trustees and president didn't pay 8.5 million for Louis Freeh to french kiss Mark Emmert.

CR's nonsense is getting so weak......it's almost reached the point where the degree of disgust associated with his appearances, is almost matched by the sense of pity for the poor little man.

Almost. :)

How on earth is Shalala's tenure at the Clinton Foundation relevant to her independence from anyone at Penn State?
You are an idiot.

Your friends were operating under circumstances they created. They threw Paterno under the bus knowing that he had less involvement with Sandusky than many of them. They paid Louis Freeh $8.5 million (which should have been used to educate the youth of PA) to bolster the asinine "conspiracy of silence" tale to justify their idiotic actions in November 2011. If the death penalty was hanging over Penn State, it's because Ken Frazier, Ron Tomalis, Karen Peetz, and Rod Erickson handed Mark Emmert the noose. Your friends are villains and cowards. And you are a pathetic sycophant.

Are we defining "acting courageously" to include unconditional surrender, paying millions in unwarranted fines and settlements, millions more to avoid discovery and destroying the reputations of people far more honorable than our "courageous" misanthropes?
