Barron Letter on Presidential Election

I sort of disagree. I think it's a generational thing that we're getting increasingly soft. Look at 9/11 for example. We as a country were "all in" for about 12 months, until it got dirty.

Or until we decided to go into Iraq rather than stay focused on Bin Laden. But I suppose invading Iraq doesn't count as us starting as a war to some on here.

This is appropriate leadership from a university president.

Dr. Everett Piper, President

Oklahoma Wesleyan University

This past week, I actually had a student come forward after a university chapel service and complain because he felt “victimized” by a sermon on the topic of 1 Corinthians 13. It appears this young scholar felt offended because a homily on love made him feel bad for not showing love. In his mind, the speaker was wrong for making him, and his peers, feel uncomfortable.

I’m not making this up. Our culture has actually taught our kids to be this self-absorbed and narcissistic. Any time their feelings are hurt, they are the victims. Anyone who dares challenge them and, thus, makes them “feel bad” about themselves, is a “hater,” a “bigot,” an “oppressor,” and a “victimizer.”

I have a message for this young man and all others who care to listen. That feeling of discomfort you have after listening to a sermon is called a conscience. An altar call is supposed to make you feel bad. It is supposed to make you feel guilty. The goal of many a good sermon is to get you to confess your sins—not coddle you in your selfishness. The primary objective of the Church and the Christian faith is your confession, not your self-actualization.

So here’s my advice:

If you want the chaplain to tell you you’re a victim rather than tell you that you need virtue, this may not be the university you’re looking for. If you want to complain about a sermon that makes you feel less than loving for not showing love, this might be the wrong place.

If you’re more interested in playing the “hater” card than you are in confessing your own hate; if you want to arrogantly lecture, rather than humbly learn; if you don’t want to feel guilt in your soul when you are guilty of sin; if you want to be enabled rather than confronted, there are many universities across the land (in Missouri and elsewhere) that will give you exactly what you want, but Oklahoma Wesleyan isn’t one of them.

At OKWU, we teach you to be selfless rather than self-centered. We are more interested in you practicing personal forgiveness than political revenge. We want you to model interpersonal reconciliation rather than foment personal conflict. We believe the content of your character is more important than the color of your skin. We don’t believe that you have been victimized every time you feel guilty and we don’t issue “trigger warnings” before altar calls.

Oklahoma Wesleyan is not a “safe place”, but rather, a place to learn: to learn that life isn’t about you, but about others; that the bad feeling you have while listening to a sermon is called guilt; that the way to address it is to repent of everything that’s wrong with you rather than blame others for everything that’s wrong with them. This is a place where you will quickly learn that you need to grow up.

This is not a day care. This is a university.

nothing wrong at all with this letter. some will complain about everything
In the spirit of sensitivity to all, I will, of course, expect Barron to send a letter like this if Michelle Obama wins in four years.

Dear Mr. PSUFBFAN,

Thank you for your email. As Vice President for Administration and Secretary of the Board of Trustees I help President Barron and the Board respond to emails and important issues. President Barron’s letter was prepared after the election results were public. Regardless of the outcome, he sought to speak to the need for mutual respect.

Sincerely,

Tom Poole

Well, that seems to clear that up.

To the Penn State Community: Relax PC Should be officially dead within the first 100 days.

After the longest and most difficult presidential campaign in recent history, the ballots have been counted, the final speeches have been delivered, and our nation must begin to heal as we prepare for a peaceful transfer of power.

Given the tight and contentious race, I know that many of you are disappointed and disheartened with the outcome, while others see this as an opportunity to strengthen our great nation.

Regardless of who you supported during the election, I urge you to focus on your role as part of the Penn State community, and to reflect upon who we are as Penn Staters.

Just last month, thousands of Penn State students, faculty and staff joined together to embrace the vision for a just and unified university. In the historic All In kick off, we affirmed the value of a diverse and inclusive university. We celebrated our community and its amazing potential for good, as well as the courage of our convictions to be a national leader in diversity and inclusion efforts.

As Penn Staters, we have been interconnected throughout our shared history, and we are resilient. When we say “We are Penn State,” we are “All In.”

I am proud to be a part of a university that respects and values the views of others, and I take great comfort in our nation’s democratic process. It is a privilege to vote, and it is a privilege to live in a country where we can voice differing opinions openly. This is a freedom we should never take lightly.

I hope you will take this opportunity to share your ideas, to listen and to learn. We encourage our offices and departments to create supportive spaces for students, faculty and staff to discuss their reactions to the election. For those who feel they need additional support services, please call Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 814-863-0395.

In addition, you may be interested in this upcoming event sponsored by the College of Communications.

Uncharacteristically, I did not read every post in this thread, but I did throw up in my mouth at the OP statement...

Wise and appropriate statement.

Perhaps some of you are living in a bubble and have not heard what has been happening on some college and HS campuses since Tuesday night.

Short version: Some bad actors have taken to harassment of their fellow students on the various campuses, and to vandalism.

We don't need that on any of our PSU campuses. If you think we do, please feel free to explain to all of us why you think we do.

The Governor of Pennsylvania has issued a statement on that. And, it is right that the President of our University has done the same.

It is unfortunate that it is necessary for Governors and University Presidents to comment on it. But, it is necessary. And, it is appropriate.

This isn't a football game and, as POTUS pointed out the other day, we are all on the same team.

Go State! Beat the Hoosiers.

Don't worry PC will be officially dead within the first 100 days:D

Not according to our future First Lady. She said the other day that she was making internet bullying her personal priority, for instance.

Perhaps you were not listening. I was. I think we should all support her on that. Looks to be a challenge worthy of support.

We are not on the same team. Until we stop with the PC nonsense, the "safe spaces" nonsense, we can not be on the same team.

Right now, there are two Americas - the traditional America of work hard, earn your own way, obey the law and your America, which is free stuff, safe spaces, and "racist".

No. We are one America. I am not in with anybody claiming otherwise today, no matter how they might have voted on Tuesday.

Yeah, you're for "one America" because your side needs my side to pay for things. That's the difference between the two political camps (conservative vs. liberal).

Conservatives believe they can take care of themselves, and therefore do not need a liberal.

Liberals KNOW they cannot take care of themselves, and therefore need the conservatives.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this. I don't know what to do. Could someone please get me a blanket and some milk and cookies and tell me everything will be alright?

I agree liberals vs conservatives. It's not going away. Teach your children. The value of working hard, discipline and compassion. We can be sensitive while being conservative. I just don't think liberals are ever going to change. Thank go we have trump to put the criminals in their place.

I think that, moving forward, President-Elect Trump will be counting on Democrats to get some of his initiatives passed thru the House and the Senate, given that the Republican caucuses in both bodies are split right now, and will likely remain split. He will need the votes of Democrat Congresspersons and Senators. Trump plans to pursue some initiatives that are not at all popular with Republican Congresspersons and Senators. In fact, exactly the opposite.

So, yeah, we are all on the same team. Except those of us who choose not to be.

I complete understand that this a difficult concept to accept. I am dealing with that, too. However, it is the reality.

God, this is just ridiculous. There are liberal business owners. Liberal military members. Liberal traders on Wall Street. Liberal, self-made billionaires. Hard working, everyday trying to make their lives better and maybe lift up others too liberals.
You've been fed and obviously bought this black-and-white notion of who does and thinks what. Your own personal "safe space". Get out more and stop with this cartoonish, watered-down "me good you bad" outlook, unless that's all your brain can handle.

Hint: Never in your life think you're smarter than I am. There's no way that will be true. There is no point in pretending that I think what I'm showed to think. Guys like you with absolutely no talent in math and the sciences are just kidding yourselves - the smart people can figure out the truth for themselves.

Like many generalizations, it is definitely not true that all conservatives are good and all liberals are bad.

But it is mostly true that conservatives are the hard-working, and that the food stamp recipients are mostly liberal.

Lol, good lord. Exactly the defensive, insecure, presumptuous, mean-spirited response I expected. This is the new America where this passes for "intellectual". Hard to debate with but as long as it makes you feel good...

So you are a "math and sciences" guy eh?
So you agree that evolution is settled science, unlike the man poised to run our department of education? So you're a math guy that understands Donald Trump received nearly 2mm fewer votes than the opponent he "beat"?

Enjoy the game sport, and whatever backwoods shithole you call home.

Geez, I guess you expect me to argue that there's no evolution and that the earth is 6000 years old. Laughable.

Evolution is not settled science but is, by far and away, the best explanation for the species that exist now and the fossil record that reveals the species that existed before. The alternative theory, that a creator placed all creatures here, seems to be without any merit whatsoever. Really, whoever believes otherwise is simply adverse to science or very, very unaware of the details of the fossil record.

It appears that, based on my very brief review of the popular vote, HRC received 400,000 more votes the DJT.

As a quick aside, since you are completely non-responsive, I take it that we now both agree WITH MY ORIGINAL POST COMPLETELY, 100% AND WITHOUT DISPUTE.

This statement by Barron is inconsistent with his behavior and that of the cabal that runs the BOT. Remember when an alumna had the nerve to question why a dairy farmer was made chair of the board's academic affairs committee rather than a professor (Pope) or a textbook executive (Oldsey)? Rather than engaging this thoughtful and legitimate inquiry, Barron labeled her as "uncivil" and her words were twisted around to suggest that she had insulted dairy farmers.

Barron is a fraud, hypocrite, and liar.

I have no problem with the letter in and of itself. However, when taken in the broader context of barren's tenure as university president, he is a hypocrite.

Regarding the incident you cited, barren commented that it was "people like her" who were ruining the university. He needs to look in the mirror (a large mirror) once in awhile.

Not sure why it's necessary to make fun of his shape. Besides, he is so short that any extra weight will look much bigger on him than on a typical adult male :D
