Barron spoke at yesterday's pep rally in Baltimore

LOL.....enough.
There are dozens of ways to accomplish all of that....and a lot more.....and actually save the kids/parents a pile of dough.....but this Bozo and his ilk will never do it.

If this is the Bloviator's Grand Plan (and it was) he is clearly either an imbecile or he just doesn't care about anything but grandstanding (probably both).

Wow. You are really out in left field on this one. You are allowing your hatred of Barron to affect your judgement.

The all-in cost of getting a BS is absolutely cheaper for someone who takes a full course load and gets through in four years than for the person who putzes around and takes five or more. The only conceivable argument I can imagine is the student who takes a smaller course load so he can concurrently hold down a good paying job (thus covering his/her living expenses from the job).

I finished in less than four years and it was a huge advantage. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise. FFS, Barry, just put together a spreadsheet and look at the numbers. What do you think that it costs to live in State College for a year?

This is one thing that Barron is 100% correct about. We need to get students -- especially those from lower income families -- through college in four years or less so they are carrying less debt when they graduate.

Uh....you're barking up the wrong tree.

Actually....you're not even in the right forest.

"The all-in cost of getting a BS is absolutely cheaper for someone who takes a full course load and gets through in four years than for the person who putzes around and takes five or more."

Really? No kidding?

"I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise"

I don't think ANYONE is.

Uh....problem is.....that is not what was being discussed.....not at all.

Further...that is not what Barron's "plan" was.
If you haven't followed along, you may be confusing his bloviations with the actual "plan" he put forward.....which would be easy enough to do)
And while he DOES talk about "getting done in four" (grandstanding and bloviating....maybe we could even give him credit for "cheerleading")...he has proposed NOTHING to make that more attainable (even though there ARE numerous ways to enhance that situation....and a lot more folks than just me could set him straight....including a lot of the faculty at PSU).

On the other hand, I have put a proposal together.
_______________________________

In fact, I've posted such a plan here on the board (and forwarded an outline to Barron, PSU administrators, BOT members etc).

Not only that, but:

The portfolio I put together:

1 - Reduced the total cost of a 4 year degree by 10-15% or more
2 - Increased gross revenue to PSU
3 - Maintained a "profit" neutral situation for PSU
4 - Increased the number of PSU graduates.

Now, that doesn't mean I am a savant....and I would expect (hope) that if they really wanted to, all the "bright" folks at PSU could come up with an even more positive plan.

Problem is - they don't want to (or at least don't have enough incentive to make it happen)
"They" all have access to (nearly) free tuition and/or financial resources that make a $100,000+ education a "no big deal".
Couple that with a system which still produces enough new enrollees to keep the classes and student housing filled up....and why should they care?

All that Barron's "summer school" initiative did was INCREASE the cost of a four year degree (while increasing both gross and net revenue to PSU....so I suppose it has that going for it :) ).

I'm not about to take on the role of Math tutor....but it is what it is.

If you're gonna' bark....find the right tree first :)

You said:

His "stay at UP over the summer, and we'll help you find a PT job" initiative (which - of course - if anyone did the math, they realized that it actually significantly INCREASED the cost of earning a degree)

Go ahead. Show us the math. Show us how staying at UP and attending classes during the summer would significantly increase the cost of a degree.
Let's see the numbers.

Really?

Not only are you still off point.....but you want a math tutor?

Listen....I got no beef with ya'....but don't jump into a conversation and claim that I'm "out in left field", when you don't even know what the discussion is about.

The Barron plan - the one he actually put forth, not the stuff he cheerleads about - but proposes NOTHING to enable - adds (depending on if you are in-state or out-of-state) $18,000+ to the cost of the four year degree.......as opposed to a normal 4 year track.

Yes....it gets a student "out in four". But there are MUCH better ways to accomplish that and actually be cost neutral or cost reducing for the student/parent.

There is a reason it went over like a turd sandwich....and even Kim Jung doesn't talk about it anymore.

If you don't get that....I can't help you any more.

You want to be educated? YOU TAKE THE INITIATIVE to go back and pull up the plan I posted on this board (or call your Trustees or Barron and ask for a copy that I sent to them).
Take that and compare it to the "Barron Summer School Plan"

Read it. Work on your math skills. Increase you level of awareness.

It is up to you.

You at least get the award for the most use of the word "bloviading" in a single message board string. Hmmmm....

How on earth are you calculating that?

Addition Subtraction Multiplication and Division :)

Well, as someone who saved a bunch of money by graduating in less than four years thanks to attending UP during the summer, I can tell you that you that there is something wrong with your math.

The cost of living is lower in SC during the summer than the rest of the year. So if you replace time spent during the regular year in SC by attending school in the summer you are lowering your costs. Say, for example, you get a degree by attending 3 summers and 6 semesters. That's clearly going to be cheaper than 8 semesters. And the earlier you graduate, the earlier you can be earning a real professional wage. Every month you delay graduation represents a lost opportunity to earn real wages.

So again, how on earth are you calculating that attending during the summer would INCREASE your total cost of a degree? That makes no sense.

Really?

I'll only tell you the same thing I tell my students.

Do your HOMEWORK....BEFORE asking for extra help.

I gave you the required reading assignment in the post above. Obviously, you haven't done it yet.
If you choose to do it, you will likely (since I assume you are an intelligent person) understand the situation.
If you DO the required reading, and still have intelligent questions, I will be glad to review the material with you.

I sincerely hope that you DO the homework.....every additional educated person is helpful.

Best I can offer.

In other words, you don't have anything to support your assertion.
