Bartlett and Van Ness potential

I think one of the things that will really decide their paths going forwards is what Nick Lee decides to do.

If Nick goes up to 149, it seems like a no brainer that BB gets the nod and goes 141 from the gun.

If Nick goes 141 again, SVN would have been given a serious look at 149.

Obviously this is all on the coaches, but I think BB and SVN are natural 141 and 149s, respectively, but unless they are beating out a returning National Champ in the room, at least one of them will RS this year.
What if Terrell Barraclough beats them both?

I'm fine with that, too. Putting the best possible lineup out there is only a good thing.

That said, BB and SVN will have 2 years and 1.5 years in the room at the end of this season, respectively. Given his stated aspirations and career goals, does BB stick around for 6 years of college?

Terrell Barraclough technically beat Beau Bartlett last year I believe in a wrestleoff

Say Nick Lee to 149 one more time

BB and SVN being natural 141 and 149 pounders would appear to confirm the @west2east post where he said BB to redshirt and Shayne going 149.

Respectfully, hasn’t the Nick to 149 question been discussed and shot down over a dozen times by the most knowledgeable poster on this topic, @Hoosier Lion ? He hasn’t been wrong yet. At least for me, it’s time to move on from this question and assume Nick at 141.

Sorry to bump this thread but didn’t feel my questions deserved it’s own thread. Many agree Beau will be dropping next year to 141 and should be much better at the weight but are we sure that’s going to be the case? For those more in the know, is Van Ness definitely a 149? Was curious if there’s any chance he wants to go 141 and try to win the job there pushing Beau back up to 149. Also, did I really read somewhere that Beau said he could go 133 if he was needed there? I could have sworn I read that somewhere. If he did say it, do you think he was serious or just playing? I seriously doubt that could ever happen but damn a Howard, Bartlett, Van Ness, Shapiro and Haines front of the lineup be sweet. Lol. Although I think we will be just fine with a combination of Howard and Davis at 25 and 33.

Beau could’ve gone 33 last year, not happening this year or any year thereafter. Van Ness has a longer frame so while he won’t be a tall 149, he’ll be much more suited to the weight class than Bartlett is.

Beau did say that about 133, but that was last year or during the offseason, and it would be unrealistic for him now. He's a team guy and would probably go for it if Cael asked, but don't see that happening.

Ok thank you. Was trying give my mind a break from Nationals and started to think about the future. I know Cael said he lets the wrestlers sort out the weights so got to thinking what if Shane wanted to go 141. Also people are really high on Shapiro and if we get him that could put another stud in the mix at those two weights.

Yeah. By my eye I was thinking no way but thought he said it in an interview this year. Maybe misremembering.

Think Shapiro may get to 157, but it’s hard to say right now. Also a bit worried about Van Ness’ health. Hasn’t been able to get healthy for two years now.

Where Haines may be. We don’t have Shapiro but doesn’t matter, still gonna be interesting watching things unfold between all these guys and their weights.

I think it is very clear BB is a 141lb and at that weight next year we will see fire and much more offense as he will move his opponent more effectively. SVN - I'm excited to see him (and hopefully healthy) as he was my #1 get. So upside - If BB only has 2 years after this one, I will say SVN. If BB has 3 years, then I would say it will be a close call between the two. I like the duo and hope SVN fits 149. Don't think we will see BB at 133 - that doesn't seem like a fun cut

In highschool , was BB more offensive ? Is it really only the bigger weight making him tentative ? I would think of you were high motor , you would always be that way. Hope it changes at 141, but I am skeptical

I think he was a bit more offensive, but he wasn’t a Nolf or Van Ness in terms of pace and output. But yes, weight can certainly make you more tentative. I think Micic is the clearest example of this. Up one weight class, he’s gone from a potentially national champ to someone who people would be shocked made the podium. The entire dynamic of matches changes when you can’t move guys around, finish shots, or get off bottom.

Stylistically I think it matters a lot also. I think Gomez is the same size as Beau and was 133 before and he is handling 149 well obviously. But Beau's "chess match" type wrestling is not a good one to wrestle up a weight.

Gomez is also much, much thicker through the, erm, hind parts, than Bartlett is right now.

I disagree - they aren't close to the same size

Beau’s matches last summer at Jr Workds, where he won a bronze, show a kid who can move skilled opponents around and create offense.
I see BB as a much better freestyle wrestler than folkstyle. In my mind, there are 4 skill areas in folkstyle - neutral offense, neutral defense, top and bottom. BB is above average in one of them at this point - neutral defense. Will he improve in the other 3 areas in the next couple of years to be an impact wrestler at B1Gs and NCAAs? I don't say it's impossible, but it's a lot.
