Santa Cruz County resident Chris Olsen was already dreading this week’s announcement that his family’s Covered California health insurance premium was about to seriously spike.

Then he found out his carrier, Anthem Blue Cross of California, is fleeing Santa Cruz County and almost every other region in the state due to a “shrinking individual market as well as continual changes” by the federal government that are creating uncertainty for insurers.

“My wife and I came up with a new Covered California slogan,” quipped the 47-year-old environmental consultant, who lives in Watsonville. “Covered California: Nothing you can count on.”
