Where are we at now? Is AB or CStar the best ever now? Or is it DT for all the Gold Medals and bonus wins and two Hodges? Is it Zain for the 93 wins in a row and two Hodges? McCoy for going 131-1 his last three years? Is it Ruth? Nolf? Bo? Matter?

I’m going AB. For now. 4x champ AND he beat the world’s #1 PFP wrestler at the oly trials as a senior. DT’s international success came way later than AB just accomplished.

I'm going with Zain, because who knows how his career goes if he had the benefit to rs as a true freshman. We all know he should have won 3 Hodge trophy's also. Just my opinion.

Crazy to think how close some others were to winning four:

Zain with a redshirt?
Ed not getting hurt?
Bo not going big for a throw?
Jason one point short of an all-timer as a RSFR?

Which makes it all the more impressive that AB and CS won four. So difficult.

I had to take Nickal because of how quickly & creatively he could end a match & because of the Myles Martin finals match with one of the best post match interviews I've ever seen. That was awesome! You can't go wrong with anyone on that list though. It's hard to pick just one.

If we're just talking folkstyle wrestling, then I'd probably put Nolf #2. The win-dixie was super innovative & his match against Todrank was legendary!

Except for IMAR his RSFR season, I don’t recall Nolf being remotely close to losing ever. It was never in doubt with anyone. I can’t say that with anyone else. Not even Zain who had a close multiple OT match while sick.

My heart goes to Nolf. So incredibly dominant. But my mind says Brooks or Carter for winning four which Jason didn’t do. Seeing Brooks beat DT at the trials and win an Olympic medal a couple months after graduating gives him my vote.

Semi-finals in ‘19 had my ass puckered.

I have Zain #1 and Nolf, Ruth, Bo, DT, Brooks, and Carter tied for #2.

And correct me if I am wrong, but I think WIN has some connections to Iowa.
Not sure. The editor to the magazine is a friend of mine who lives in central PA. When a PSU kid wins the Hodge they send it to my friend's house and he delivers it to the PSU coaches to present at the banquet.
I have several photos taken with my father and I holding the Hodge.

That doesn't answer your question, but I thought this was a good place to share that tidbit.

They used to have connections to Minny.

About a decade ago, we used to call it the Goofer Rankings.
Wasn't WIN started by a guy named Mike Chapman? (or some similar name?) I think he was in pretty tight with Iowa when Gable was still coach.

So are you saying you got the Hodge? ;)

I think only a cage match can decide this question. Maybe toss in a dodgeball for good measure!

IDK, but following Gable assistant J Rob to Minny isn't a huge stretch. It's all part of the Midwest Mafia that thankfully Cael tore down.
If Midwest Mafia means Midwest schools always winning the NCAA tournament, yes Cael certainly breeched that dam. It’s also interesting how some other Eastern schools like Cornell also started placing near the top at the same time.

BTW, when you look at the list of best PSU wrestlers posted above, you are also looking at most of the best college wrestlers since 2011 and a lot of the best college wrestlers ever!

That was part of it. It was also about how the Oklahoma to Minnesota axis thought of themselves as the epicenter of wrestling in the US, even though a lot of their success came from recruiting the PA/NJ/NY/OH region.

Also how the wrestling media routinely reinforced that image, in no small part because they were staffed with myopic midwesterners.

Cael smashed it. Ohio State or Michigan could've broken that image had they taken the sport seriously sooner, though they would've been adopted by the Midwest Mafia as Original Big Ten members and because Woody and Bo. Koll was on the verge of breaking thru too, except Cael beat him to it.

It’s AB for me. Incredibly clutch and in control. Now we’ll get to see him prove it even more on the world stage. Olympic Bronze was just the beginning

Tough call between Zain and Nolf. Zain's 3 losses all his true freshman year. 1-2 against a 4xer and a loss to Port, going 5-1-1-1 at NCAAs.

Nolf also with 3 loses. 1-2 against IMar (IMHO the most underated 2xer) his rs freshman year and the injury loss to Van Brill going 2-1-1-1 at NCAAs. Incredible that Nolf didn't win a Hodge just from the competition in the same room.

With the complete body of work (placement, bonus, who they lost to and how), I'd put them, DT, Ruth and Nickal all slightly ahead of Brooks and CStar. The lack of matches also doesn't help their cases.

In order:
1) Nolf
2) Zain
3) DT
4) Ruth
5) Nickal
6) AB
7) CStar

Yes, I have two 4xers at the bottom. Crazy.

If Carter goes undefeated this year it will be four straight years where he has gone undefeated in matches he actually wrestled. He officially has the two Medical forfeit losses from last season. Without those Medical forfeit losses he could have been only the second wrestler since Cael to have gone undefeated for four straight seasons. Also, without those Medical forfeit losses he could have been the only wrestler on the list with only two losses. With all of that said, I would probably still place Zain #1. I am not sure where I would place Carter on the list.

Nolf for me with Zain 2nd. I’m fine with people saying CStar or AB because they have 4 titles but they both have a bad loss on their record and AB lost to Coleman late in his career. Nolf and Retherford didn’t have any of those. Their losses came to top of the line opponents. AB lost to Coleman and Venz. Venz isn’t a bad loss I guess but he’s nowhere near the level of the the guys Nolf and Zain lost to. Carter lost to Washington. On the other hand Nolf only lost to Martinez while Zain lost to Port and Steiber. Zain and Nolf were both more dominant as well. Much higher bonus rates than Carter and Aaron

I cast my vote on wrestling skills not necessarily the amount of wins or which opponents they beat. In regards to wrestling skills against any other wrestler I take Nolf all day
You just said what I've been trying to say but didn't know how! But.... But if this is true than I do believe (and it strains me to say) it has to go to Taylor he has 3 loses (nolf only has 1) one to bubba- Taylor was the better wrestler even that day just not those couple minutes, and dake twice, impressive. His bonus rate is way higher hints the hodges. I do believe Nolf got screwed on a couple of hodges too.

Such mental problems …. trying to figure out “the best”. We have choices. We are rich beyond belief. The roll call gets longer each year. I’ll be looking forward to this very same question in 2030.

IIRC, the only one close (or even controversial) was his match at NCAAs to Hayden Hidlay...

DT remains my favorite because of the way he impacted the program and his style, but I have to say there are so many good choices in there.

DT - getting caught by Bubba tarnishes his achievements a bit. But % of bonus and pins, as well as four finals and two Hodges don't allow a lot of tarnish.

Zain - only 3 losses - Stieber in B1Gs, Stieber (#2 seed) in NCAA and Port (#1 seed) in NCAA. All in his true freshman year. And then 93-0 his last three years with two Hodges.

Nolf and Nickal - both 3 times champs and like their senior years' Hodge race, I see them as tied in any rankings.

Ruth - if not for getting injured in 2011 NCAAs, probably the first 4 timer at PSU.

Brooks - never shirted and still one of two PSU first time 4 timers.

CStar - just wins, baby, no matter what serious injuries he has. Only 5 time D1 (nod to Haselrig) champ in NCAA history would be quite an accomplishment.

McCoy - Fluky loss to Greenlee in 1995 NCAA semis is the only blemish over his last 3 years and 132 matches. Trying to wrestle his freshman year at 190 was a terrible, terrible idea. Had he red-shirted that year and gotten adjusted to heavyweight, we're having a wholly different discussion.

Matter - He was my first wrestling hero. But I think he falls just outside the first tier, which given the first tier is not too bad. I'd still put him in the Ring of Honor. You could make an argument for any of the other 8 guys and I'm not going to quibble. For me, it's an 8 way tie. MM and Levi (and we'll see who else) are on the very near horizon - my first wrestling hero might get bumped from the top ten all-time PSU list - and soon. But it's great to be a Nittany Lion wrestling fan these days.

Footnote - Two of the reasons I don't have Dake higher on my all-time list of NCAA wrestlers are the bad losses in his career and his unwillingness to alter his style to help his team in duals while at Cornell. I may have to do some reevaluation.
