Doubt this will get as much traction as the “Worst Fan Base” thread, but let's see where this goes.

What is the definition of best or worst? I think best starts with knowledge of the sport, and then participation in the sport. Finally, support of wrestling at all levels is foundational to a great fan base. I think several fan bases fit that description.

The Iowa fan base certainly isn't unintelligent nor unsupportive of their team. They definitely are very passionate about their squad! I wish other D1 school's fan base had half as much passion as they do! Please know that I am not saying that all other D1 fan bases are inferior to theirs!

There are a lot of great fan bases... but I wouldn't want to trade in mine for any other. We share a common love of offensive and explosive chain wrestling. :)

don't forget fun. We like fun...

Yes, yes... the fun. Pennstate1985. Talking about non dodge ball fun. There are other types of fun we don't get to experience at Penn State. Iowa wrestlers explain it best. Some stepped right out of their caves at Cave Hawkeye Arena to comment.

You have to listen to the fun... Iowa wrestlers have in the video I posted. "I have a right to "kill" him, "If punching was allowed... I'd probably do that", throw him out the door like a little kid, choking opponents, slamming opponents. "I don't think... I just react." Embarrassing their opponents in front of their opponents parents. How much fun?? o_O

Marketing genius if I ever saw it. That video. Someone actually put that video together and released it.

"We're not the fanciest guys out there... we don't have the slickest moves... and we don't shoot in Championship matches... but by GOD... we're going to turn it into a scrap. Tom Brands

I'd LOVE a fan base that applauded such WWE, Friday night RAW... fun.

That was produced by ESPN, it wasn't an Iowa Marketing thing. It was for their docu series "The Season" which was a 6 or 7 episode deal back in 2002 i think. ESPN obviously had a picture they wanted to paint and they did. It seemed like they wanted to get the "dark underbelly" side of wrestling. It's an interesting watch, but certainly has a very narrow scope.

But don't let facts get in your way amalone, keep the Iowa bashing going!!

From a media perspective, I've posted hundreds of shows on my podcast network. The consumption of those shows through the various programs leans heavily towards Penn State.

When I get a "national" name on a show, it's great. Mario Lopez (Extra, Saved by the Bell) and Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, Vision Quest) got really good numbers -- but not as good as David Taylor, James English, Cael Sanderson. The Nico episode is climbing the downloads ladder.

Iowa-based shows with my World Wrestling Resource show gets pretty good numbers when Terry Brands is on, but anything Iowa-related on the network comes in second. Penn State fans consume more of the podcast content than Iowa.

Those two schools consume more than Oklahoma State does.

When something's posted regarding Penn State, my numbers indicate a ravenous consumption, better than any other wrestling program.

Virginia Tech's show numbers are the best of any "team" show I have on the network. The outlier was the "orange" episode, which got thousands more than the typical VT show, which is still VERY good per episode.

I know when I have something on Penn State, it gets hit a ton.

The Guillotine show gets massive numbers because it's hit by the thousands of fans who hit that site daily. The Guillotine's traffic is better than some national sites from what I've seen.

If anything gets posted on the Guillotine from my network, that gets blasted. That state as a whole is sucking up content.

Are you crazy??? Those were Iowa wrestlers with direct quotes. From killing on down. I don't have to bash Iowa. I'll let their wrestlers speak for Iowa wrestling... if that's what you call wrestling.

Wow, Iowa lives inside your head. That's so funny. Love it. What else ya got? Remember - for you only - facts need not apply.

Funny how a thread about Best Fan Base, makes you think about Iowa.

Iowa is definitely an elite fan base. Like any other program, that is not all inclusive. We all have our exceptions. But, when I think of Iowa I definitely say they are a worth contender for the number one spot.

Iowa has some of the most raucous, fans. There's many times... more action on the sidelines with Tom and Terry and in the stands at CHA... then on the mat. You deserve some kind of consolation prize.

The thing I noticed in the Iowa video was Hawkeye wrestlers initiating offensive moves. For those of us who only recently discovered this sport called wrestling it was surprising and shocking to discover there was a time when Iowa wrestled offensively. Who would have ever thunk it possible.
I wonder what they did with that skill set?

The video is an embarrassment, no matter who you are. It's classless, vile, and sociopathic, in addition to being twisted and immoral. There is no fan base in the world with common decency and common humanity, that would attempt to excuse that clip. None.

Yeah, sure, but have you conducted a "per capita" analysis? (TIC)

Back on track guys...I gave folks the opportunity to post something positive about our fan base, and other fan bases. Somehow, several of you nearly always head to the gutter.
Ok, Ok.
Iowa fans show up to support wrestling. Their collective passion for the sport will remain strong I am certain, even as the Hawks become a perennial competitor for 5th or 6th place with an occasional national champion winning when the ref calls a match determining stall as time runs out.

Gee whiz Roar. Is that better?;)

Obviously a questions like "Best Fan Base" is hard to quantify. Like Jason said above, you might be able to use some sort of participation stat or web traffic figure, you might be able to use television audience for a dual or dual meet attendance, either home or away (to see which team draws the biggest crowd on the road.) But really, on this board, I would assume PSU would be the fav and on HR, Iowa would be the fav and as a fan of these teams, I would say it's clearly between these two schools, but that would just be my opinion i guess.

I will say that what 21 Guns says above is silly. This is just an example of a PSU fan that first wants to tear down Iowa rather than promote their own team. Which makes me wonder why the video was posted in the first place. I am not saying Iowa doesn't have it's share of these people, but it seems like a lot of Penn State posters want to make sure they rip down Iowa at every chance, and they want to do this first, before anything else. A thread that had nothing to do with Iowa, is quickly turned in to an Iowa thread, that seems so strange to me. Penn State has so much to be proud of based on your teams accomplishments I just don't understand why so many can't accept those accomplishments without first saying something nasty about another team.

And for you that dismiss my claims, as many will, go back and read a few threads on here that have nothing to do with Iowa and see how many of them have a post bashing Iowa on the first page, just out of the blue. I know a lot of people will slam me on here and I wasn't going to post this, but was reading the Intermat article about Mark Hall and the first poster on there, made sure to slam Iowa just out of nowhere. I know this is common among rivals, but this goes well beyond that. So many are so insecure and I don't understand why.

Heh, heh, heh. Silly you!

And one more thing to add: I read this board everyday, along with HR, Flo, Intermat and a few others, because I love wrestling and want to catch all the latest news and be informed as to what is going on. I will say that HR posters that come over to BWI for the most part are respectful and polite on this board, there are bad apples for sure (maybe you think I am one), but I am not usually embarrassed by the posts of Iowa fans on this board. On the flip side, if you go to HR, you will find some good BWI posters over there that want to talk wrestling, but you also have a huge number of PSU trolls, posting things that are out of line and just trying to start an argument or say something derogatory about Iowa. Things that would get someone banned over here. That's my take and I know some on here agree with me because some of your best posters end up apologizing for them on occasion.

Yes, the Iowa bashing does get out of hand sometimes. Take it as a compliment that Iowa is on the mind of many of our posters.

Poking fun at you guys is fun.
Not sure, I suppose it is possible, but I am fairly certain I have not/do not talk trash about any specific Iowa wrestler. But Iowa fans? Oh yeah.
Five wrestling fans walk into a bar, how do you know which ones are Iowa Hawkeye fans. When you ask how was the wrestling they are the ones who stand, raise a fist and scream heeeeees staaaaaaallllling.
Honestly though, who else is there to make fun of? Iowa has fans who love wrestling, they have a freaking ton of fans who love wrestling. It is always fun to make fun of Pitt at just about anything, but since nobody associated with Pitt knows they have a wrestling team, who the heck could I/we possibly banter with.

So...I'm guessing you liked it?

I really liked the video. I have no idea why the neo poster wouldn't like it at call it an "under belly view". That is a kick azz video!!

I watched all of the episodes last night, the series was pretty well done. One thing that jumped out to me was coach Brands instructing his wrestler to pick up the opponent and slam him (which he did). For better or worse, it's just a different style of coaching and wrestling there - the "Iowa style"....

Somebody needs to give 21 a PSU/Cael history lesson. He's over there on HR embarrassing you all ;)

You guys need to revisit your blacklist thread and push your mods reign in the wild west. In some ways you guys are responsible for own downward tragectory.

ain't that the truth. How an 86_90 is allowed to post his vileness is beyond me. He has an extremely unhealthy fixation with pedophilia. People like him bring out the worst in our fans and everyone else suffers for it. The troublemakers need to be banned on both sides. I like the Iowa board. Great and knowledgeable fans.
