Sound Track and Theme -

The Natural

======

Theme from

Chariots of Fire

The "theme" from COF is as good as it gets but the entire score from The Natural is more pleasing to me. That and cinematography elevate the Natural for me. Some of the best back lit scenes such as when Iris stands up in Chicago to inspire the shot into the clock, or near the end when Hobbs shows up in the clubhouse with the line ending, ".......my father wanted me to be a baseball player". My daughter loved the scene after the HR to beat the Pirates when the falling light was captured as a reflection in Pop's glasses. I'm with the Ranger on this one; I watch that movie every year right before opening day.

The movie version of the Natural is like making a movie of Of Mice and Men where everyone lives happily ever after. It is the perfect example of Hollywood ruining a good book.

All the movies mentioned are great. If any of you can watch "The Greatest Game Ever Played", a golf movie based on a true story, you will not be disappointed...

I am still a little confused why the Black Widow shot REdford in the Natural.

Maybe one of the guys who read the book can elaborate. Superficially, she shot him because he was the best baseball player, evidenced by his striking out the Whammer. If the Whammer would have hit Roy Hobbs' pitch into the statusphere, then Harriet Bird would have killed the Whammer. I don't think the movie ever provided any insight into why Harriet Bird did what she did.

Re: Remember the Titans, it was entertaining, but it was so far from the truth that i can't put it on my "best of" list.

Among other things:

  1. The real Herman Boone is supposedly a colossal a-hole. He was eventually canned for abuse.
  2. The school was integrated for 5 years before they won states.
  3. Gary B played in the championship (95% sure on that one).
  4. Sunshine never kissed anyone, and that dude is pissed and perplexed as to why they put that in there. This complaint is minor (not to him), relative to the others.
  5. The school was way bigger than the other schools. The movie didn't mislead on this point, but they sure didn't point it out.
There are other points, which are pretty easy to find on-line. Some of the former players are not fans of the movie, suffice to say. I may be off a little bit on some of this, but I think I am more accurate than the movie was!

That said, it is still a fun one to watch.

Frankly, I'm shocked that you would insinuate that Hollywood would twist facts in order to make a more marketable movie... the next thing I will expect is for someone to say that the Easter bunny isn't real.

I call it the Disneyfication of the truth. How about Secretariat? Penny saves the horse farm and her family........bullshit, the farm was swimming in cash and she left her husband a few months after the epic win at Belmont. How about "The Express"? Had to show that WVU was an over the top bunch of vicious bigots in their game versus Syracuse. It just wasn't in the least bit true but was put in for effect. The real game was played in Syracuse! They also showed a blowout win versus Penn State. Blowout? SU won the game against #7 PSU 20-18. I guess they had to show a big win against the King. I just will not watch a disney historical or biogeaphical movie again.

The Natural wouldn't make my top ten. Hoop Dreams, Raging Bull, Eight Men Out, Pride of the Yankees, and Gentleman Jim are all superior IMO.

...you are all probably too young but nothing comes close to Gary Cooper playing Lou Gehrig in ...
"The Pride of the Yankees" !!!...
...the cast also included Theresa Wright, the great Walter Brennan, and former Yankee stars Babe Ruth and Bill Dickey...
... if you get a chance to watch it on a late movie channel don't miss it....
Right on my man, Pride of the Yankees is outstanding! Also liked Chariots of Fire and Remember the Titans. For comedy: The Water Boy. "That's some high quality H20"

Did you read the novel by Bernard Malamud?
Yes. The Natural has all the elements of a Greek tragedy, which is not surprising, since Malamud's apparent intention was to set a Greek tragedy in a modern context. I love the movie, but I have to admit that I like Field of Dreams even more.

Mystery Alaska... How has no one brought this one up? Ranks in my top five
Very underrated movie. Great cast and really good story. Written before outdoor hockey became a fad. David E. Kelley (aka Mr. Michelle Pfeiffer/creator of multiple hit tv series) wrote/produced. His father, Jack, was a great hockey coach. Won back to back NCAA titles at BU and led the old New England Whalers (which became Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes) to a WHA title.
