I posted this on the other board as well.

Living in NW Ohio, I’m in OS and UM country 15 miles to Michigan border. All week the Toledo news stations have touted tomorrow’s os/um game as the “best rivalry in all of sports”.
I can list several that could get the “best rivalry in all of sports” label.
Curious what others feel is the “best rivalry in all of sports”?

I think the best college football rivalry is highly dependent on where one lives. Obviously I am pulling for the Buckeyes, but a UM victory would help the rivalry in the long run.

Maybe back in the 90’s Michigan/OSU was good but Michigan ONLY beating osu 3 times since 2000 not so much. Just my two cents. Duke/unc , auburn/Alabama, army/navy much much better

The old big five with Penn, temple,st joes,Villanova and lasalle.had some great games

A lot depends on where you live. Right now I'm listening to the Rheinland Derby--Gladbach vs Cologne--on Fohlen Radio. That's a really big deal in that part of the world.

And for me.....

Auburn vs Alabama, Duke vs Carolina, Army vs Navy, FSU vs Miami, and Texas vs Oklahoma are much better rivalries than anything out of the Midwest. Florida vs Florida St can get nasty as well.

I’d also say the old Texas vs Texas A&M and Nebraska vs Oklahoma rivalries were much better when they were played.

I agree with kgilbert that where you live affects your outlook. In South Carolina Clemson vs USCe is huge. In Oklahoma it’s the OU vs Okie St Bedlam game. In Oregon the Civil War game means a lot but doesn’t get the national attention.

I honestly think it depends. UNC and Duke claim their BB game is and the media normal hypes it. But when neither team is highly ranked, media almost ignores it (cannot recall if that was last year or year before).

for fans of teams in a ‘rivalry’ it will always be the best, biggest, most important. However, for any rivalry to be the best and most important, IMO there needs to be more at stake than just pride and bragging rights. That and media hype is required to get more of the general public interested in certain rivalry games year to year.

I think that Ohio State versus Michigan is in the top 10 of rivalries in the United States. Oklahoma Nebraska used to be huge. As an Ohio State fan, I don't really care whether other people think it is important or not. I just want Ohio State to beat Michigan. (It will be a difficult task today.)

Some things that make it one of the top rivalries. Three times in the 1990s Michigan defeated Ohio State when Ohio State was undefeated going into the game. In 1996 Ohio State was hugely favored and Cooper managed to lose the game to Michigan.

Some iconic moments that lots of people remember. Woody stating while the team was ahead 46 to 14 that the reason he went for two point conversion was that he couldn't go for three. (OSU players have stated that it was really a joke after the extra point team messed up and other people had to be sent in. That Woody really wasn't rubbing it in on his good friend Bo schembechler.) Jim Tressel speech upon being hired, stating that Ohio State fans would be proud of the effort of the football team 310 days in the future when they played in Ann Arbor and bringing down the house in the basketball arena. Also, Desmond Howard Heisman pose.

….Lehigh-Lafayette is by far the longest uninterrupted football sporting event in college history with 157 games - several years they played home and away!…
