Bethlehem Catholic Hires Mike Cole

Beca is still the AAA favorite for sure, but what is their lineup expected to look like next season?
106-Dillard
113-Dillard
120-R.Campbell?
126-C.Campbell??????
132-Mcfillin
139-Frinzi? Pavis?
145-Rath
152-Scanlan
160-???
172-Cruz?
189-DeLiuse
215-Warke
HWT-???
Last I hear Cole Campbell had quit, if he returns that is big for them, but if he doesn't that is another hole and they do not have a big incoming freshman class from what I have seen.
There is a chance they only have 2 returning medalists (both State Champs).

Am hearing Warnke is headed back to the Schuylkill League

I'm certain BECA expected to lose Desmond when they didn't hire his Dad.
I would think Cole will bring in some Jersey talent.

Heard today that Keanu Dillard is almost certainly going to be at a different school next year. He’s only a freshman, so he will not have to sit a year (at least a presumption of eligibility barring losing a hearing). Hearing the school may be a surprise to many. That’s not solid enough to run with yet.

Also hearing that a large part of Cole’s appeal is Bethlehem Catholic as a school is hemorrhaging money; and he can financially stabilize the wrestling program with his own personal wealth.

A few years ago I believe The Diocese was considering combining BECA and Notre Dame GP. It was about the same time the Diocese closed Pius.
Notre Dame has expanded some of it's facilities recently. Maybe they merge in a few years.

Heard ACC and Becahi merger , that’d be a powerhouse for some sports no doubt

For the people unaware how close these schools are to each other. Bethlehem Catholic is 5 miles from Notre Dame GP and 7 miles from Allentown Central Catholic.
Thanks, Where is FCA in relation to these? Back in the day, the denomination and ethnicity make of the Catholic school mattered greatly (even more than the wrestling program!) so multiple schools could be found in close proximity. Fast forward 100 years, money rules the earth, sisters are no longer teachers, Polish immigrants now understand English, the Irish are not discriminated and having 3 schools within 10 miles is a poor allocation of resources. With declining enrollments and competition from other non-public education organizations, I’m surprised to see consolidation hasn’t already occurred. Actually I didn’t even know NDGP was a school until Crookham enrolled there.

Faith Christian is in Quakertown … so at least 15-20 miles

NDGP has been around for a while with a very “meh” athletic program - they used to be pretty solid in boys and girls basketball but largely non-competitive in everything else. With financial trouble, one of the ways they’ve tried to recruit students to keep their doors open is go hard after athletes. Hence the Matt Veres, pump up the wrestling program hire (similar but different to what they’ve done in football with Phil Stambaugh). But outside of the immediate area, there is absolutely no reason anybody in the state would have heard of ND until Crookham went there, which still seems crazy to me just knowing the history of the school, and it’s place in Valley wrestling in general.

The rise of NDGP is the part of new wave of club wrestling in high school. Perhaps enrollment is helping to drive it. Becahi was well ahead of the pack starting in the early 2000’s but recently there have been St. Joe’s in SC, McCort, FCA, & Berks Catholic mimicking the blue print - successful youth club takes over small private school program. Becahi has sustained its success and stapled itself as elite in wrestling. St. Joes disappeared quickly as the initial freshman class graduated. McCort, FCA, NDGP stories are yet to be told.

Can a wrestling program really save a private school? Maybe not enrollment wise as an additional 10-15 wrestlers who otherwise would not have enrolled doesn’t move the financial needle much. Maybe the notoriety the elite wrestlers bring makes the school a household name and the school more desirable to non-wrestling public school kids.

Wrestling is just 10-15 students, but ND has had a bunch of state medalists/champs in traxk and field, I think they’ve won a 2A cross country title, their baseball team made a state final, football has been a top 10ish team in the state. They’re enrolling a lot of athletes a cross the board as an enrollment strategy.

I think the biggest uptick private schools will see is going to be the direction of some public schools. Here in District 11 and probably all through the state the school board make up and the hiring of the superintendent dictates everything. Just here in the Slate Belt, Bangor and Pen Argyl are 2 Districts with different fundamentals. If Pius X was still open I believe that it would of had an increase in enrollment from the local base because of some of the current public school direction.

From this lineup, you might be looking at
106:
113:
120: R. Campbell
126:
132: McFillin (SQ)
139: Frinzi
145: Rath (1st)
152: Pavis
160: Scanlan (SQ)
172: Cruz
189: DeLuise
215:
285:
I think the three juniors who were at states all stay (Rath certainly would have Blair/Sem options, but I don't have indication that's what he'll do). They only took one freshman last year (Dillard), so they don't have a ton of in-house younger guys to fill some of the spots opening up. Seems like the team race statewide has opened up a ton.

This years AAA state race could definitely be very close. Same thing with dual meet race, as the clear top 3 from last year have all lost studs.

Actually it might not be all that close. Last year's top 3 (Beca, Nazareth, and Waynesburg) all lost significant contributors. 4th place State High finished closer to 11th than to 2nd.

Bishop McCort is going AAA this year, and they might only qualify 5 for states, but those 5 (Bassett, Forrest, Gibson, Herring, Magro) likely would've outscored Waynesburg last year, and possibly finished ahead of Nazareth.

Is McCort confirmed to be AAA this year? I thought they had to wait 1 more year for the next cycle to bump up.

That's a good question about the cycle. Don't know ... but it would be stupid to force them into AA. Let their 2-yr cycle start last year -- their classification during postseason ineligibility shouldn't matter.

U are forgetting at least 3 more State qualifiers for Bishop McCort

Feel free to name them.
I think they have a good young kid up at around 170 - Butler, maybe? - and they have the Lincoln S. - won't attempt to butcher his last name - kid from FL down low.

Not sure who the 3rd is.

EDIT: He beat me to it. Forgot about Miller.

Not sure how lineup will be or if they get them all in the lineup. And if AAA NW only has like 25 teams so some weights are not very tough.

I don’t think the likelihood of them being allowed to opt up mid cycle is very high anyway though.
