Better game, better TV ratings?

Last year's Rose Bowl or this year's Cotton Bowl?
Whatcha think?
I doubt this year's Cotton Bowl matches last year's Rose Bowl. I also doubt this year's Fiesta Bowl matches last year's Rose Bowl.

5.4 million watched last year's Cotton, Western Michigan didn't help but, Pretty sure that number gets blown up this year. Interested to see if it beats last year's Rose (16.5)

Outcome not withstanding, last year's Rose Bowl was one of the best/most entertaining games I've ever watched. Going to be hard for the Cotton to top that.

Last year's Rose Bowl. I would bet large amounts of $ on this.

Last year's Rose Bowl drew 15.74MM viewers. If you look at the Nielsen numbers in depth: the rating increased as the game went on, as social buzz about the quality of the game increased. This helped the Rose Bowl's rating non-insignificantly.

Last years Orange Bowl is very similar to this year's Cotton Bowl: (1) same Friday night TV slot, (2) two big name football programs (Michigan v Florida State). That was, like the Rose Bowl, a well-played and competitive football game, that likely drew in more viewers as the night went on. Overall, it drew 11.46MM viewers.

Last year's Orange Bowl is essentially the baseline expectation for this year's Cotton Bowl. It probably draws more than 11.46MM viewers. But I doubt it does ~40% better to get to 15.74MM viewers.

Better game last year. As to ratings, I know last year's game did extremely well. The Cotton Bowl is played a few days before New Year's, right? That will hold ratings down a bit.

No idea on the actual numbers but I think "the traditional" of the Rose Bowl would usually push that game to higher rating especially with Penn State vs USC. I don't think Penn State vs Washington in a non-playoff game comes close. Darnold vs Barkley was a big selling point. Barkley vs Vea, while intriguing, doesn't carry the same weight. Same with Barkley vs Pettis

I do think Penn State-USC gets better numbers than Ohio State-USC

Penn State-Washington isn't a bad game - by any means. But I'd be shocked if it doesn't have the 5th highest TV rating among the 6 NYD6 Bowls. Ahead of the Peach but behind everything else.
