What happens if PSU beats OSU and loses to MSU.

OSU then beats MSU.

All three finish with one conference loss?

Or if Penn State loses to OSU, beats MSU, and MSU beats OSU; and they all have one conference loss?

In the above scenario, the team with the best out of conference record, wins the tiebreaker. That's Penn State. This is why yesterday's results benefitted PSU so much.

At some point do rankings kick in?

Only if out of conference records are the same, which they are not, UNLESS there is a four way tie, should PSU lose to Michigan. If Penn State defeats Michigan, that scenario goes by the way side also, or if Indiana defeats Michigan this Saturday.

In a three way tie involving Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State, Penn State wins the division.

The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie:

(a) If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.

(b) If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 8 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step (or sub-step), the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative. If three or more teams remain tied after any step, move to next step in tiebreaker with remaining tied teams.

1. The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other.
2. The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division.
3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, 6, and 7).
(a) When arriving at a group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the collective tied teams as a group, rather than record against the individual teams.
4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents.
5. The best cumulative conference winning percentage of non-divisional opponents.
(a) Example: East 1 non-divisional opponents are 20-7, East 2 non-divisional opponents are 19-8, East 3 non-divisional opponents are 14-13 – East 1 would be the representative.
6. The records of the three teams will be compared against the highest placed non-divisional teams in their division order of finish (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7).
(a) When arriving at a group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the collective tied teams as a group, rather than record against the individual teams.
(b) When comparing records against a single team or a group of teams, the record will prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group are unequal (i.e. 1-0 is better than 0-0, 2-0 is better than 1-0, etc.)
7. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative.
8. The representative will be chosen by random draw.

This is why PSU would have the upper hand in a three way tie. Overall record.

Nothing to worry about OSU proved last year they will be in the playoff, with Smith on the inside and Herbie on the outside it's a slam dunk!

Herbstreit will begin his agenda when he begins to see a road for his team to get in. Usually he starts in mid October, with asides to very subtle degradation of the teams directly in front of Ohio State, then he moves Ohio State up ahead of one team per week, using metrics that he sort of invents, to reason his rankings, then he repeats the same talking points every time he has a spot to.

Trying to follow the tie-breakers last year, while fun since we were the Cinderella’s, was overly frustrating.

So, what's the answer? I don't need the questions :-

I don't worry about tiebreakers until we have a loss. At that point, a lot depends on who the loss occurred to. It is too complicated otherwise.

In the B1G, PSU will always lose a tie breaker if O$U and scUM are involved. I never trust that process. Just win and eliminate that chance....

Everyone mis interprets that. It means your record vs the two other teams you are tied with. There aren't many realistic scenarios that have PSU winning the division without a win vs OSU.

Assuming we all have 1 loss, it comes down to what the cumulative overall record is of our western division crossover games. So we want Iowa Nebraska and NW to win as many as possible, specifically Nebraska because MSU also plays Iowa and nw. MSUs other crossover is Minnesota. OSUs 3 crossovers are Nebraska Iowa and Illinois. That will be the most likely tiebreaker if there is a 3 way tie with OSU and MSU each with one conference loss. It stinks, but non conference record is the seventh tie breaker, one spot ahead of picking names out of a hat.

Jim Delany on tiebreakers: "It goes in alphabetical order in the East and reverse alphabetical order in the West!"

I am surprised everyone didn't know that!

There's six games left before the Big 10 champ game. Let's not worry about this yet. We need to be focusing on Michigan.

If we were on the team, I would agree. But I suspect my focus at this time will not affect the team's performance. But that's just me.

And if none of that works, it will be pistols at 20 paces.

9. The look test. The look test may override any of the above 8 items if it benefits OSU or Michigan.
