Not going to make a formal poll out of the question, but the Chad Henne thread below got me to thinking about the highly rated recruits over the years that got away, or we simply missed out despite our expectations that PSU was the program expected to land the kid.
Chad Henne certainly is a big one. Others that come to mind were Dan Kendra, Kevin Jones, Terrell Pryor, Vidal Hazelton, Broderick Green and even Shady McCoy, although he actually didn't qualify when he chose Miami and later ended up at Pitt after prep school.
When the recruiting services weren't as sophisticated and before 24/7 technology of the internet services, there were others that come to mind, although how close we may have been to landing them perhaps tougher to gauge. A few names that come to mind are Tony Dorsett and Jimmy Kelly (who didn't want to be a LB and wanted to be a QB). Don't recall if we had much of a shot at Dan Marino, or Joe Montana back in the 70's, but it's likely we were in the hunt as much as JoePa could be. Other big name, targeted recruits that we missed out on ?
