BO’B back to NE Pats as OC

Franklin recruited Barkley. O'Brien was a terrible recruiter did not recruit any offensive line players. O'Brien was a stepping stone for PSU and PSU was a stepping stone for O'Brien. Thankful he left and we have Franklin!!
Franklin didn't recruit Barkley. He picked up where OB left off.

For a terrible recruiter, he did pretty darn well, especially given his first task was to keep a team and recruiting class together. When you look at top players by position during the Franklin era, OB brought the majority of them in over the 4 classes he impacted. That is a fact. O'Brien gets most of the credit for Barkley, like it or not. He and his staff were better recruiters than Franklin and company, and not by a little bit either.

Maybe not bare but that roster would be only above Rutgers if it were in the B1G East right now.
That roster is better than you give it credit for, a lot better. Just looking at the starters compared to the upcoming season, the lion's share of them come from 2012 including at least eight starters on offense and defense which includes the entire offense line, both receivers, at least one TE, maybe the entire front seven on D (at least six) and two defensive backs. That team also faced fairly radical changes on both sides of the ball, a much harder schedule than we have played since and officiating bias unlike any team has ever faced.

Oh Wally. You stating it doesn't make it so. The best thing O'Brien did was come here. The second best thing was to leave after 2 seasons. PSU needed a coach and Bill didn't have a job. The facts are the BOB hoped the super bowl run would render him a HC job in the NFL....it didn't. To make matters worse his contract to return to NE was not renewed. Josh McDaniel returned to NE and BOB was odd man out. Ira and Judas had promised a home run hire and came up with cow dung. Jaws advised his buddy Ira to look to NFL coordinators and that led to Bill O'Brien. O'Brien was probably perfect for that particular task. I would remind everyone who jumps on Franklin that in his 2 year stint OB flirted with the NFL after year one and also renegotiated his contract.
You need to read the attached article carefully and anyone who does will have a detailed explanation of what James Franklin faced during 2014.

Virtually everything you said is a bald faced lie. You are a liar, plain and simple.

Deadspin? Really? Now I know you are both clueless and a liar. Good job. We already know you aren't a football coach. You do realize that OB was Joe's hand picked successor don't you. Note, the lack of a question mark.

I'm not sure I entirely agree on the defensive side of the ball, but you're right on the offene. The real problem that would become evident in 2013 and beyond is seen in the depth on the OL. Aside from Donovan Smith, there was very little quality in the pipeline. Some of that is on Joe and some of that is on O'Brien. Some of it was guys not panning out, but there was also a lack of numbers. The 2011 class produced Donovan Smith and a lot of disappointment. The 2012 class had 2 OGs and 0 OTs. The 2013 class produced one guy that played OT and one OT recruit that ended up on DL. Two starter-quality OTs, Donovan Smith and Andrew Nelson, in 3 years isn't enough. By the fall of 2014, the OL had talent issues at C and RG, RsFr who weren't ready starting at RT and LG, and Donovan Smith at LT. The back-ups largely consisted of bad busts and walk-ons. You're not going to win much with that.

You are right, he won't last.....in New England. 2 Years from now he will have Mac Jones at the top level and get another chance to be a head coach.

BOB could always coach the shit out of football. It was when he tried to be GM as well.
BOB may be his own worst enemy in trying to get an NFL HC job. He's going to have to admit that he did a poor job managing the roster in Houston and let someone else do it at his next job. That will be one very bitter pill for him to swallow. He'll also have to convince an owner that he can work with a GM that won't necessarily do everything he wants them to do. That may be a hard sell.

There you go making shit up again. Hand picked successor. That's precious.

This is where you should shut up and not further demonstrate that you are a clown, but that really isn't your thing so troll away.

Joe Paterno, " I don't know Bill....."
Hand picked LOL LOL LOL LOL

Really? Barnes, Zettel, Austin Johnson, Hodges Mauti, Urschel,Gary Gilliam, Matt Stankiewicz, Robinson, Stephon Morris, Adrian Amos, Jordan Lucas. Jesse James, Smith, Zordich, Glenn Carson, DaQuan Jones, Mike Hull, McGloin, ......and several others all played in the NFL. Certainly not a roster that should have lost to Ohio.

The 2003 class, that you said was better than any class Franklin brought in, was ranked 33rd.a little bit either.

Bill O'Brien named Texans HC 1/2/14
James Franklin named PSU HC 1/11/14
Saquon Barkley decommits from Rutgers 2/19/14......commits to PSU

You are completely wrong! Franklin heavily pursued Barkley while he was at Rutgers! O'Brien had absolutely nothing to do with Barkley period. At least get your facts straight!

BOB sent out an offer in October of '13 while Barkley was a Rutgers recruit.

Franklin got Barkley to a junior day in January of '14 and flipped him by February.

It's not difficult to give O'Brien credit for his time here while acknowledging it was best for all parties that the left when he did. Holding a grudge against him is beyond pathetic. Let's stop pretending people were lining up for this job when he took it.

Everyone knew except Obrien and a lot of fans on this site.

There are still fans walking around with Jerry is innocent shirts.

I remember the typical excuses like it was not football related and it was outside the NCAA jurisdiction. If everyone knew then why are they still blaming the BOT?
Well, the sanctions were all rescinded and all records were restored…sanctions completely expunged…so there is that!

But does that somehow alter the sanctions existed? It was never "a football issue" but we knew they were going to do what they could do destroy us especially with the BOT begging for it.

Franklin has done ok for himself too. 11-2 last year. Hack never won more than 7.

A lot of schools did not want to pay/ have funds for a special teams coach. Paterno didn't, he dived up the duties between the coaches. I called for a special teams coach on this board in the early 2000's and the reply thrown back to me was there wasn't money in the budget for it.
It was NCAA rules. No teams back then special teams coaches because you were limited to only 9 coaches. Not a single school had a dedicated special teams coach. Just like now all the coaches contributed to coaching them.

You do realize that Barkley was still a Rutgers commit when Bill O’Brien took the Texans job? He didn’t flip to Penn State until 2/19/14 when Franklin was the coach. So tell me how is O’Brien responsible for him coming to Penn State? This has to be the dumbest take I have seen right up there with your gem of Hackenberg being the best QB in college football.
