For those of you who want to meet Bo and get the beer that is being brewed in his honor you can do so by checking him out at Short Bus Brew House in Lewistown on July 20th, 2019.

The owners are fantastic people and the story around how this all came about is pretty funny.

is this the same one that they had to cut the faces off of because of compliance? Just with a different label?

I am not sure what they did with the stuff they brewed last year if that's what you are taking about.

The story goes like this (and I hope I'm not giving out info they don't want me to) but after Bo pinned Myles Martin at the 2018 NCAA championships they brewed a beer and had a label with Bo in Cael's arms celebrating. We all know the pic. PSU sent them a cease and desist letter over it. Bo's dad then called the owner and asked if he could get some of the beers.

I am not sure what they ultimately did with that beer and the cans because I never asked. I also don't know if this is the same brew they did last year or if they sold it with another name/label or not.

I can definitely tell you what they did with 3 4-packs.:)

By the time I got there, the cease-and-desist letter had already arrived. Therefore, they cut the faces off of the label of their remaining inventory. it was left with a generic wrestler in a blue singlet with a white belt, being held up by a generic coach.

...and that was because of an NCAA rule about profiting from the likenesses of wrestlers (or any student-athlete). No longer the case with Bo.

As for Short Bus Brew House, I pass it on the way home from work every day...but it's never open when I pass by.

I am pretty sure they are only open Fri, Sat, and Sun. On Friday they open in the evening until 9 PM. I stopped in last Friday myself on the way to State College. If you get a chance I'd recommend checking it out. Their stuff is very good.

The irony there is that the NCAA used to reserve that supposed right to itself, using student-athletes' likenesses to profit, until UCLA's Ed O'Bannon filed suit over video games with his likeness on the cover. Multiple rulings later, the courts agreed that the NCAA's policy violated antitrust law.

You must know the owners then because the Brew House just opened in March (I think the grand opening was the NCAA weekend) and I don't think they've ever had any other location that I am aware of.

Aside from our own neck-of-the woods, Bo is a celebrity, and that celebrity is only going to grow as he pursues his dreams.

I realize that I might have tunnel vision because I am a fan, and I think everybody would be aware of a wrestler's talent and status, but, in the case of Bo, I can tell you that I know people who don't follow the sport, but they know who Bo is.

My wife hates wrestling but she knows Bo.......digs guys with blue hair. Faith meets flamboyance.

I here that their next product will be 83% alcohol, "Wrecked Hall Cement Mixer Moonshine".
83% is dangerously high. I don't want it near schools - I don't want it sold to children! That's an infamia. In my world, we would keep the traffic in the deranged people - the maroon-and-gold-colored. They're animals anyway, so let them lose their souls.

I have met the owner, when he was brewing, and selling, in his garage. Didn't know him before that. I hope he does well.

Short Bus Brew? When I was in high school some students who were uncouth would denigrate other students by saying, "Do you take the short bus to school?," because the special needs children would take "the short bus."

From what I understand one of the owners lived a little further from normal school bus routes so the school would only send a short bus out to pick up him and his sister which is where the name comes from.

The term definitely has the connotation suggested by Lionlover, I've heard the same jokes over the years, but less so in recent years, perhaps because of increased sensitivity around special needs kids. Perhaps its use as a slur was regional too. So maybe the owner is unaware.

Are they bottling/canning? If so, I'm willing to spend to get a 4 or 6 sent my way from one of you wonderful, generous souls...

This is a different beer than the That's What We Do beer. They do limited can releases.....im sure they'll have some available at the meet n greet

Let’s be real. I don’t think he named his business after the handicapped bus. As for cans, yes they do canning runs. Not huge runs but will certainly have some available. This is a blond ale. The last one was an IPA. They have a small food menu and are very friendly folks. I hope he can make it work. Seems to really enjoy the craft of brewing beers.

I assume you are correct that the owner did not name his business after the handicapped bus.
But anyone with any insight into branding would tell the owner he is a fool for choosing that name,

A general concept in trademark law is that the public's interpretation of a mark/logo is far more important than your intent. So even if you'd somehow never heard of Coca-Cola, a court's still going to find that your Coca-Colla brand infringes b/c the public will likely be confused. Not that the question here concerns litigation, but it's good practice to steer away from marks with pejorative meanings unless you're wryly embracing those meanings somehow.

That said, I'm not sure how widespread "short bus" is understood pejoratively. It was when I was growing up but that was awhile ago. I'll still drink their beer, hopefully even this weekend.

i would be shocked that a business owner would not google/urban dictionary whatever name he was going to use for his brand. accidentally naming your business something derogatory is like accidentally naming your child the same as an adult film star, all it takes is a quick search and you save yourself that embarrassment.

I would wager a very large sum of money that nearly everybody in my generation (born in 79) and younger that grew up in the US knows exactly what the terrm "short bus" means. Of course the brewery owner knew what it meant, most likely because the kids at school made fun of him about it. If the poor kid had to ride the short bus growing up, he has every right to name his brewery after it. JMO

I don't think there's any question of whether he's got the right, I think the debate is whether it's a good business idea.

It's hardly unique. We all remember Big Johnson t-shirts (and the many imitators).

And have you seen some of the names of crab companies/restaurants? Dirty Dicks in OBX and She's Got Crabs in York come to mind.

I'm sure the name will get some reactions from people ranging from actual offense to a dismissive eye-roll, but there are plenty of companies or establishments that have names just as (if not more) "problematic".

Right, those companies deliberately embraced the double meaning.

sheesh.. I rode that bus.. they mixed up my file at school:confused:.. FWIW I always could usually read faster than the other kids on the bus:eek::rolleyes::eek: @SJLuvsLions

What happens when a person was born and named a year or two before...say... an adult film star? Do they have to change their name so as not to offend? Do they need to carry a card or wear a shirt stating they were born before a certain criminal, 'ner do well, etc.?

Thank you for your response,
John 'Razor' Bobbitt

A short bus sits outside the operation, with "Short Bus Brew House" stenciled on it. Opened February 1 of this year in Burnham, PA, in what had been a mattress retail store.
