here's the deal:

wife started earning her keep around here last fall after 16yrs of a vacation otherwise known as stay-at-home-momming (okay, she worked PT the past 5yrs). She now a consultant and she's finally contributing to the family (doing pretty good, I might say)....

Thus, after 9 yrs of "eventful" penny-stretching motor-home summer vacations (which i love , except for the driving/yelling part) to the requisite East Coast destinations - we're looking to fly "somewhere tropical" and enjoy what likely will be one of our last family vacations (sons are 16 & 14) as my oldest is a HS junior... both kids are athletic and we don't expect to spend a lot of time in our room... boys will eat up beaches, snorkeling, pools, exploring nature etc as these are the entrees we are looking for... NO CRUISES. I don't go on vacation for golf, so i don't care about how good the courses are... i am not a gambler so casinos get me aroused about as much as pics of Tip Oneill

After supporting the family on my income for 16yrs, I'm still in penny-pinching mode even though wife is working... was sniffing at an all-inclusive "Moon Palace" resort in Cancun but that's rolling up beyond $6-7k... that price gets me to poop just a little... wife and I did Aruba on our honeymoon 20yrs ago and loved it, but looking for more for the kids to explore than a barren (albeit beautiful) island...

Again, I am not a member at TPC Jasna Polana so I can't afford Fiji.... gotta believe someone here can put some decent ideas in my head... names of resorts would be great if ya got'm

Thanks in advance

Puerto Vallarta has beautiful beaches, interesting downtown, and there are lots of excursions available into the surrounding mountains. There are many, many good hotels there and in Nuevo Vallarta (which is within taxi distance of downtown)

(I will say the Moon Palace in Cancun isn't bad, either- but I prefer the other side of Mexico)

Serious question: ballpark, how much money you willing to spend (for everything)???

You didn't say how long you want to go away for .....and you're wanting to go during late-peak shoulder season. I'll come up with something.......

You need to page "Relayer"....he's your source for "budget appropriate" beach vacations. He travels "really well" and is my vacation hero.

Ha! It was my uncle's Facebook pics from Puerto Vallarta a couple weeks ago got my wife and i drooling about an exotic destination that did not involve dropping blue deodorizer tablets in the shitter ;) I gotta assume PV is more-pricey than Canun...

Well it's a bit further, but I'm not sure how much difference that would make. I don't care much for Cancun- it feels like Vegas to me- but I really love PV

I will start on this tomorrow, but I know that as soon as I come up with something, Relayer will have 3x the recommendations.

I think Cancun would be a good choice but if you decide to go there keep in mind the location of the hotel. Moon Palace is a long way from the city of Cancun, you need to get closer where all the action is.

I have been to both Cancun and PV (actually, just got back from Cancun yesterday). If you can make it to PV, I concur that it is a great family vacation, especially with two older kids. There are some great resorts that have lots of activities (particularly in the nuevo area -- multiple pools, including wave pools and lazy rivers). But there also is a fun downtown with great restaurants (and fun restaurants -- Pepe's, etc.). And you can do lots of excursions, including zip lines, dolphin swims, ATV rides, tequilla tastings, etc. It's a longer flight for you than Cancun, but I personally like that area better. Spending money sucks, but you never will regret a great family vacation.

Well, my wife is already balking at $6-7k as she was pricing Cancun... privately, I figured that would likely be what such a trip would run for the four of us....

So, $6-7 K, for a 7 day "beach" like vacation in mid April for a family of 4?

Costa Rica. Or, the Dominican Republic.

Beaches in Turks and Caicos. Can't ever go wrong with Grand Cayman. Direct flights and swimming with stingrays, with almost zero crime and zero peddlers harassing you.

Having been to TCI 11 times, I would never recommend Beaches unless your kids are into Sesame Street characters. Plus rooms are almost all sold out and would cost a minimum of 15k for 7 nights.

Got it. I added this to my previous post after you responded....

Honestly, when it comes to the tropics, I usually only target TCI anymore for obvious reasons. We are not into AI's, TCI only has two. It's going to be tough anywhere in the Caribbean for Spring Break on short notice. Air Fare will be the first big hurdle.

Good luck, let us know how your search goes.

From the sound of it, your family would enjoy a similar trip to mine. We have made numerous Caribbean trips of all types and never the same destinaton twice.
First off would skip all inclusive if want to be active. We have loved Grand Cayman, Nevis, Tortola, Antigua, St Croix. Stay at a small non all inclusive reaort or rent a home. Rent a car and experience the whole island, different beach every day and places to eat.
For Tortola flew into st thomas, short ferry ride to tortola. Day trips, via ferry, to virgin gorda and JOst Van Dyke. Several other close isles could get to.
Have done several all inclusive, couple of cruises. But without a doubt doing our own thing has made for the most memorable trips. Bottom line is you cannot go wrong. My wife and I dream of ending up in the Caribbean someday.
Have fun!!

also- look at condo rentals on sites like HomeAway- lots of nice condos are less expensive to rent than an all inclusive

You can do Hawaii in April for a reasonable amount of $$. From the east coast it is a bit of a hike. I would say Maui would be the perfect place for a family. Plenty of fun for kids, beaches, bars, outdoor activists etc.

Keep in mind that when you go to one of those all-inclusive resorts you will pay about $100/pp/day for food and drinks alone, so the cost for 7 days is ~$2800.

We will not go shopping or dancing, so won't be seeking any "action" as far as gambling, whores et al.
we'd spend most time on the beach/water/pools... the only travel would be to any must-do activities like hiking/ guided exploration (caves etc) /educational stuff

Cabo San Lucas. April is at the end of peak whale watching season. Lots of things to do there. I've stayed at a resort called the Hacieda Del Mar, a Sheraton property. Great restaurants on site, very nice pool, spa..staff will treat you very well. Lots of things for the teenagers to do also. Highly recommend it. Flying out of Philly requires a connection either through a Houston or Phoenix, or you can fly direct from Newark, I believe.

Math is working against you. If you assume 4 adults at $500 per person R/T air fare, that's $2000 out of the box. If your wife is balking at $6000 for the week, let's assume she's comfortable with $5000. That only leaves $3000 to cover 7 nights lodging, rental car, meals and entertainment ($400+/day).

Tough to do unless you do something domestic (VRBO?) or Tier II "all-inclusive" down in Mexico and those can get expensive (I.e. You'll be subsidizing the people who eat and drink too much).

Most of paid activities like guided tours, snorkeling, diving, jet skis, etc originate near the city.

Consider Belize. And the Belize $ is pegged to the USD 2:1 which simplifies translation.

Did Maui a few years ago with the family and it was a great trip including snorkeling right from our beach. This would probably be a budget buster though (especially airfare from the east coast) as it was >$10k for the week from Denver. Cabo was mentioned also which is a great trip and unique setting in the desert, but keep in mind most beaches aren't swimable.

St. Barth's...get a villa, great beaches!
St Bart's is one of the most expensive islands in the Caribbean. You could try Jamaica for all inclusive packages or St Martin for apartments or villas. Also Antigua has great beaches and lots of villas to rent. Keep in mind that airfare may differ a lot if you have to change flights.

Can get it done for same as St Maarten. Fly direct to St. Maarten, take the high speed ferry.

Honeymooned in Bermuda. There was ZERO nightlife when we went, but I would readily concede that it might have changed radically in the last twenty years. Beautiful island. Rode mopeds all over the island, and frequently came close to losing it after running over frog carcasses flattened by cars and buses. You can't believe how big a flattened frog carcass can get.

There are some great deals now in Puerto Rico, both airfares and hotels. Safe, english language, American dollar, great beaches, rain forests.

Personally think Kauai or Maui would be a great trip for you someday but those involve two really really long travel days from Rochester.....wouldn't try Hawaii unless you had at least ten days. Been there seven times over the years, every family should hit there!

If you are not looking for a destination but just really nice weather, nice beaches and very reasonable prices, the Florida panhandle and the gulf coast heading west towards Alabama is a consideration. Have friends that head there for 4-6 weeks over the winter rather than heading to South Florida or Arizona.....they love it.

I think I might have the answer, but it requires your wife to search VRBO listings on St. Maarten/St. Martin to see what she is comfortable with.

Air fare is going to cost you $500 per/per (Buffalo-SXM R/T) but that is not unreasonable. I'm going to leave you with a VRBO link to mid- April available accommodations. I know the island fairly well and I'm certain that many of us can help you out. Dining and entertainment are nice and reasonably inexpensive on St Martin. I think it is what you are looking for.

Here you go.

https://www.vrbo.com/vacation-renta...&to-date=2017-04-22&minprice=125&maxprice=250

Please dont hesitate to ask for assistance. I, and many on this board, have been there numerous times, and in Peter Frampton fashion, can "show you the way"

from experience, PR is "dicey" near San Juan. You need to head to the far eastern end of the island in order to feel safe.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of disappointment. Old San Juan and Condado are nice during the day in advance of a cruise ship department, but "at night" neither are a place for a family on vacation.

Tell Amy to look at St. Martin/St. Maarten. I know it sounds remote to you now, but wait until you check the number of flights in/out of Princess Julianna Airport

They cater to Americans. It's far safer than PR, air fare from the Northeastern US is very reasonable and there are far more accommodation choices than anywhere else in the Caribbean. There are probably 15 different pristine family-friendly beaches with great snorkeling and sun-lounging.....and that doesn't even include the ones at the NE end of the island that are really "clothing optional". Many great beach cafes, especially on the French side.

I think we can get close to $5000 "all in" and most importantly ...."safe and enjoyable".

There are restaurants in south Grand Case where you can get a four-course French "price-fix" dinner for $25...with the food as if it was cooked in Paris, and if that isn't in your budget, there are American-like grocery stores in Phillipsburg.

East St. Louis is rather temperate that time of year. But, please take along your hand gun or uzzi just in case. Hollow-points if you please.
