I'm always interested to see how we do in bonus points (pretty good historically!). By my un-official count and therefore possibly slightly off, these are the bonus points for the top 6 teams, also taking into account how many bonus came from mffts (in parentheses):

PSU 23 (2) Net-21 (taking away the mfft points)
OSU 18.5 (6) Net-12.5
Iowa 10 (4) Net-6
Minn 20 (6) Net-14
Neb 13.5 (0) Net-13.5
Mich 5 (0) Net-5

A couple of observations:

1) Obviously, PSU is good a bonus points (nothing profound there)! Our net was 7 more than Minn's net who came in 2nd, and even more over the rest. And, we had many fewer pigtails than anyone else, which is the biggest bonus point round!
2) I was surprised that Minn had the 2nd most
3) Interesting that Nebraska had the 3rd most net bonus (taking out mffts)
4) Iowa only had a net of 6 bonus points--something they need to improve on!
5) Michigan had a rough B1G's and that was significantly reflected in only 5 total bonus

Your comment about having fewer pigtails got me thinking and I decided to check bonus points without pigtails. Using your "net" numbers above as a base I subtracted the bonus points from the pigtails to come up with a "normalized" bonus total. The numbers are eye opening.

Normalized Total = Net Total - Pigtail Total

PSU 18 (3 Pigtail Total)
OSU 7.5 (5 Pigtail Total)
Iowa 6 (0 Pigtail Total)
Minn 7.5 (6.5 Pigtail Total)
Neb 6.5 (7.5 Pigtail Total)
Mich 0 (5 Pigtail Total)

Good work subtracting the pigtail points. Our bonus point dominance is even more clearly seen with that. In general the other schools got about 50% of their bonus in pigtails (Michigan, ALL of their bonus). By contrast we get a lot of bonus from quarters on!

Well done, guys. This is a big deal, not just for the bonus points, and maybe not in the way some think.

Sure, bonus points contribute to team scoring, but imo, it's more than that. It's indicative of overall effort, so it can also play out in wins and losses. Being fit, confident, and having more desire (than the opposition) generally ends well. That word "effort" is a key to wins, and often wins of the bonus point variety.

Yep. If you are aiming to win by bonus, you are winning for the most part and placement points are still paramount.

I don't have access to previous year's NCAA points and bonus points for the top teams, but I do recall that in a couple of our NCAA titles, the difference ended up being the difference in our bonus points. Certainly placement points figure the highest in final team scores, but often the relative difference in bonus points proves decisive. Nice to see our guys getting lots of both!!

I have it if we're really interested? Maybe just for the years where it made a difference.

Well, to get bonus points you need to score at least 8 points. Iowa this year scored 4 or fewer points in half their matches at Big Tens.
Tom Brands commented in a post-match interview that he wasn't happy with some of the Iowa guys lack of pushing for bonus (or something to that effect) at the B1G's.

I'm really interested!
Here's three years, by School - Total Points (Bonus Points; Maj, TF, Falls only);

2011 (in order of finish, top five only)
PSU - 107.5 (16.5)
Cornell - 93.5 (14)
Iowa - 86.5 (8)
Oklahoma St - 70.5 (9)
American - 65 (10)

2013
PSU - 123.5 (29.5)
Oklahoma St - 119.5 (21)
Minnesota - 103 (17)
Iowa - 73 (11)
Cornell - 65 (8)

2014
PSU - 109.5 (18)
Minnesota - 104 (13.5)
Oklahoma St - 96.5 (13.5)
Iowa - 78.5 (8)
Edinboro - 62 (18)

You realize Iowa scored 30.5 bonus points (that's my recollection) last year at NCAA's, more than any other team. May not happen this year, with Stoll not as healthy, and Kemerer out of the line-up.

Good catch Roar, but “ Stoll not as healthy”? As healthy as what? Has he ever been healthy for Nats, let alone scored many bonus??

Stoll won the Gorrarian Award last year with three falls, and contributed seven bonus points to Iowa's total. Don't see that happening this year...

Thanks for doing this, Roar. So, for those 3 years, the bonus differential was determinant in 1--2013 over OSU. Interestingly OSU had the 2nd largest # of bonus points for that 3-year span. Unfortunately for them, PSU had an incredible 29.5 bonus points! Sure appreciate your research efforts!!
