Bouzakis & Mendez

I'll be that guy - if our primary competition for Meyer Shapiro is Nebraska ... I like our chances lol
I'll go a step further: scanning the Nebraska rosters since Cael came to PSU, he's lost exactly one prospect to Manning -- Chad Red. And Cael didn't lose Red so much as he chose Nick Lee.

So, yeah, I'm not concerned about Shapiro going to Nebraska until somebody has evidence stronger than "I heard something at workouts that was legally impossible." Y'know, something better than Spyker overhearing two guys outside the gym.

I'm actually curious, did Cael recruit Chad Red really hard? He was a big time prospect who has had a great career so far but some would argue he's "underachieved" (as if being on the podium 3/3 times is some kind of underachievement lol)

The Reds definitely recruited Cael pretty hard. Attended camps at PSU for at least 5 years. IIRC Chad Sr. brought Cael to Indy for a couple camps.

From what I remember, Cael was interested but also kept an eye on Lee. And when things got serious with Lee, Red suddenly got more interested in Nebraska.

As far as Red "underachieving" goes: that's weak.

Is this true? They weren't the same class and both looked like they had frames to go 149 if needed. My guess was that Nebraska gave a bigger offer and Cael relies on guys coming for less, as is well documented.

And agree on Red not underachieving. He's AA'd every trip. Very few of his ranking produce like that. He hasn't contended for a title, but he's been pretty much a slam dunk recruit. Sometimes we, as fans of powerhouses that usually get consistent success out of big recruits, forget how often these guys don't pan out.

To be fair, I do get what McScorely was getting at considering some of Red's high school peers (Lee, Yianni, Pletcher) all won titles or spent time ranked 1st.

The argument "for" Red underachieving is based on some or all of the following. Not saying its a fair assessment, but that's the point for that side of the discussion.

1. At times Red looks uninterested
2. Red himself admitted there was a time he wasn't focused and was losing interest. Considered quitting.
3. Red has some head scratching losses (see #s 1 & 2?)
4. Red shows up in March, but why isn't he consistent all year.
5. If Red is that good in March, would better motivation, a stronger work ethic bump him up to title contention?
6. Red was one of Indiana's All-time greatest, going undefeated and winning 4 State Titles (single class), culminating with a win over Lee in front of 17k fans. Expectations were HIGH

I don't think all of those are necessarily fair. But I think it's okay to ask some of those questions.

Looking at just his 3 AA finishes, its easy to say he hasn't underachieved. There are those that look at a slightly bigger picture and wonder... and those that look at a bigger picture and assume they know the answer.

Red committed to Nebraska 9/21/2015.

Nick + Joe Lee committed to Penn State 9/10/2015.

(Those are the article dates. Red's is Flo, probably same day. Lee's is the Harrisburg paper, possibly day after.)

Interesting. You're probably right then. Thanks for the info.

I'm certain he's right. At the time I thought Red to PSU was pretty much a forgone conclusion and was well known throughout wrestling circles that Chad and his dad wanted him to be at PSU. That changed quickly when Cael got Lee. I think there was some debating and arguments here from those that favored Red over Lee that Cael caused Chad to go elsewhere by getting Lee.

Similar to Hoffman versus Beard.
