so I do some mitt work with the trainer, but mostly I just trade blows every Monday/Tues with my crazy buddy while the trainer curses us out.
I developed a pretty good jab that had my buddy very tentative for a few weeks.. so he would end up getting hit and then come at me with crappy overhead rights and I would either return the favor or turn to the trainer and and say "really?" After nothing changed my trainer said that I should stop being a biatch and tag the dude if he wanted to go crazy.
And then things fell apart, for 2 weeks thru drilling my buddy just attacked me, he is nuts and actually likes getting hit. I knocked him down 3 times in an hour and he thought it was hilarious, I was ready for Xanex cocktail. If you've ever really knocked somebody down while boxing it's not as cool as it looks. When you really tag somebody your punch is not always true, and and it kills your damn wrist.
Last week I fell totally apart and started flipping my back, getting my head down.. and pretty much just not using anything I'd been taught.
This week I got back on my fundamentals and and really just worked on blocking 2 and 3 punch combo's.. the diff being is that the ones I didn't block I caught with my face, ears, and forehead. I wasn't hurt as according to our trainer we simply don't throw hard enough to worry about that type of damage at this stage. We've drilled for 2-3 minute time slots without even looking at the other guy according to the trainer, as we are so worried about throwing our combos we don't even see when the other drops his hands.. all landed punches are simply luck.
Yesterday I got the upper hand.. my jab was working and it was knocking my buddy off his line.. if a guy has to reset his body, his chances of firing out a clean combo before your are ready to defend yourself are nil. We each throwing 1/2/3 combos with other guy countering on at the 4 count. My buddy lost all concentration and he was pulling back his 3 (hook) before it even got me in order to guard against the counter.
Even the bad week last week I slipped a 2 from my buddy, and flipped my hips into a 2 counter, drilled him in the chin and did what idiot's boxers everywhere do.. I watched to see whether he would fall down or not.. he didn't and we both call all goofy again. When you hit a guy, even in friendly drilling you sometimes see that look of pure fear, even if the guy has been getting you for 4-5 straight minutes.. even worse is when you know that look is on your face.. you can flip out and try to put him in the cheap seats, or be smart, regroup, and check your breathing. When you go nuts your breathing just seeps out of you, you can't even stand after a 20/30 bash fest even if neither one of you lands a hay maker.. this is the reason street fights last 20 seconds instead of 8 rounds.
It's a real challenge, sometimes when things are not going right it an awful feeling of fear/fatigue, and shame all wrapped up in one LOL. It feels great as hell when you are the punisher for 30+ minutes. Even funnier with us, is who gets yelled at more. We sucked so bad one day our trainer just got in his jeep and drove away. The worst are pop quizzes.. trainer will line you up.. tell you to be ready to slip and counter...he'll throw a few punches, and then we will slip the wrong way.. he'll stop.. he'll throw a few punches, then we will slip right way but counter with the wrong hand.. he will explode and say how the eff are you countering with a left after you just threw you shoulders back to the right on a slip.. he'll then see, idiot # 2 get over here.. and then he'll explode when idiot #2 doesn't even get past the first slip after standing their smirking at idiot #1.
I haven't really been this anxious since playing football years ago.
