As a Steelers fan I am fine with it. Let Bell and Bryant play too haha. Never expected this to be honest.

Goodell is done.

Wonder... If any way... This would effect any ruling(s) as they pertain to the Emperor Mark Emmert?

If I understand correctly... Court ruling says " No Roger... You don't have this authority"...

How does Emmert ?

WTF does this have to do with Emmert?

Do the ball boys get their jobs back? Do the Pats get their draft picks back?

Well the Wells Report was about as worthless as the Freeh Report. The Freeh Report cost a lot more people and destroyed and harmed a lot more lives whereas the Wells Report was just the shittiest commissioner ever once again repeating his stupidity and God act that he has had since the day he took the position. The Wells Report cost money and in the end that is about it. The people that want to believe the worst of Brady and the Pats will regardless.

The situations aren't similar. PSU paid to be screwed and prove a position only a few people are dumb enough to ever buy into. The NFL doubled down and paid try to and prove that their initial stupidity was justified by paying a guy a huge sum. They both failed but the failures are polar opposites.

It's hard to argue that Brady didn't know anything but it's even harder to argue that the NFL and Goodell didn't F this up BADLY.

Good morning. Could be reading this wrong.... But Courts saying Riger... Commissioner of NFL does it have the authority...

Would a court feel the same way about Emmert ?

Just a question... Certainly did not mean to upset your day.

Wow, very surprising. I'm not a Brady fan at all, but I thought he was getting screwed. Cant believe but very happy to see the court embarrass Goddell

No real dog in this fight but am sort of happy Brady won. Having said that, either way - he wins every day....

I am just so proud of our country that uses "our" money on such CRAP !!!!! But, I'm sure there is nothing more important for our courts to deal with.
Thank you America :)

Somehow I suspect the Patriot's are going to get some B1G-like officiating in their first few games.

I have thought all along the back room agreement was TB sits out second game of season against Jacksonville. I'm guessing NFL agrees to drop any appeal if TB sits that game with no confession of complicity.

How can a league and it's Commisioner not have authority to suspend a player?

The ruling is comical, but typical of our jock sniffing society.

Well it doesn't help that the commissioner has a history of pulling suspensions out of a hat. The things he has done have undermined himself and the league to the point that a very ugly Pandora's Box is open. You can't just randomly dictate suspensions as they come. They guy is an ass. At least he pays himself 50 million a year to be terrible at his job. He must LOVE his own jock.

In my opinion, a judge shouldn't even have the authority to rule on something like this. The NFL is an organization with rules that all participants choose to be a part of. When those rules are deemed to be broken, is the judge saying the NFL can't hand down punishments? Does anyone believe the equipment manager who called himself "the deflator" and is on video taking the balls into a restroom acted on his own. If Brady didn't ask or direct him to deflate the balls, who did?

Geez a lot of people on here with strong opinions that apparently haven't read or tried to understand the decision.

The ruling doesn't say the Pats didn't cheat. And the ruling doesn't usurp Goodell's authority to discipline. What it says is that the punishment that was handed down was not one that Brady could have been aware was possible per the agreement between the league and players. This has been why the NFL was stupid not to reach a settlement. The rules between the players and league says that equipment tampering is a $25k fine. But instead, Goodell hands down a 4 game suspension. He does not have authority to arbitrarily abandon the agreement and make up his own punishments. That's what the ruling says, and it's correct.

I'm confident the tax revenue generated by the NFL will more than cover this...sheesh.

Read the decision, it has nothing to do with whether or not the Pats cheated. Those rules you cite are why the NFL lost. It's the NFL that didn't follow its rules on what the punishment for this type of cheating is.

What is the point of anyone following rules anymore?

The court held that the rules have to be followed. It was the NFL that didn't. Yes, the Pats broke the rules, but the NFL tried to hand down a punishment that was well beyond the agreement they entered into w/ the players. If the NFL thinks equipment tampering should carry a harsher penalty, then they should've upped it when they entered into that agreement.

I know I'm getting repetitive, but...the ruling doesnt say a league and its commissioner can't suspend players. It says that if the rules say, "if you break rule X, the punishment is Y," then the commissioner doesn't have the authority when a player breaks rule X to say, "sorry, punishment is now Z instead."

You mean there isn't some all encompassing vague bylaw which states the Commissioner can hand down punishment as he sees fit for player behavior that is detrimental to the posterity and good image of the league?

This is why Penn State would have won in court against the NCAA; their bylaws, or the ones they were hoping to use to justify their actions concerning sanctions, were shaky at best, and several legal experts admitted as much before sanctions were even a thought. Dumbasses.

Exactly. People need to read the ruling. People act like Brady electrocuted dogs after having them fight and get torn up.

Just to be clear, I'm not defending Brady or the Patriots. I'm defending the legal basis of the ruling, which was correct.

Then why didn't he say 2 game suspension was appropriate, instead of allowing Brady off scott-free?

Yes. This was all about due process. Ask the Paterno's and the others suing the NCAA.

The new rules are - there are no rules. If I'm NE, I'm going to break every single one of them just because I can. I'm going to deflate the balls to 2 psi, come out with ripaway jerseys, and all of my receivers/DB's are going to be dripping with stickum. So much that they look like the Michelin man. I'm going to have Go Pro cameras and drones dropping in on the opponent huddle and every headset will be tapped. There will be spy cameras everywhere including in the opposing team bus. Kicking balls will be pumped up to 90 psi with helium. And magnets. I'll put magnets in the goal posts and in the ball, and have Tom Edison in the booth with a control box.

Hell, I'm going to take the field with 14 defenders.

Who's going to stop me? The court just ruled that cheating is permitted and the Commish can't do a damn thing to stop it.

If the rules the NFL entered into w/ the players says that all of those things carry only a $25k fine, then that's all the NFL can do. The NFL shouldn't have agreed to those rules if they thought the punishments should be worse.

"if you break rule X, the punishment is Y," then the commissioner doesn't have the authority when a player breaks rule X to say, "sorry, punishment is now Z instead."

How are you supposed to anticipate every single rules infraction and have a punishment set up for every single level of how bad it was broken? That is impossible.

The juxtaposition of A) supporting the Paterno lawsuit and hating the NCAA for handing down sanctions outside their bylaws while B) being mad that the Brady's suspension was overturned because "HES A CHEATER" is staggering

Then why didn't he say 2 game suspension was appropriate, instead of allowing Brady off scott-free?

Because the NFL and players agreed to a rule on what the punishment is. The court can't circumvent that contract and apply a 2 game suspension out of thin air anymore than Goodell could. The rules say that tampering with equipment is a $25,000 fine. So that's all they could do. If the league thinks equipment tampering is a bigger deal, then they shouldnt have agreed to such a light penalty for it.

That's really not what the ruling says at all. Under your example, the court is saying that if the NFL rule book states that the punishment for too many men on the field is a 15 yard penalty and automatic first down, the referee is not permitted to instead penalize the offending team 14 points.

You're absolutely correct in saying that the rules must be followed - but that also means that Goodell and the NFL need to follow the rules, too. And they didn't.

All righty then! I'll just pay the $400 grand/season up front, and now we can let the cheatathon begin! WHAT A BARGAIN!!!

Probably could've anticipated it when QBs specifically asked to be in control of the balls.

And sure, you can't anticipate everything. But the did specifically anticipate equipment tampering, and the specified a punishment for it.

Ok, I get it now. Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like players are ok with other players cheating if that's all the punishment can be. Pretty sad.
