QB: Hack's problems are not just due to the OL. He got worse last year and was even worse yesterday. There's really not much reason for optimism at this point. PSU and Hack both need a change.

RB: Lynch is OK but he's a senior. Some good prospects but they might need a year to develop. I don't think the RB position is our problem this year or going forward.

OL: I gave Nelson & Mahon a break last year because they were young. Unfortunately Mahon got beat repeatedly yesterday. Mangiro has not lived up to expectations. Palmer needed a redshirt but that ship has sailed. It appears that RS freshman Sorrell is his only backup.Gaia keeps making mistakes. Did Reihner play? This unit is still 2 years away IMO. By then Mahon & Nelson will be seniors and the young kids will have had time to grow.

WR: We have so many 4* WRs that I can't believe they're all that bad at creating separation. The scheme has to be bad or these guys just can't get on the same page as Hack. I think we have adequate talent.

DE: We didn't get enough pressure on Temple yesterday. Some of that was because Temple's pass plays developed quickly and some was because our guys wore down in the heat. Nassib looked pretty good but he's a senior. I didn't see much from Sickels. I think we have average DEs this year. I'm not sure about next year once Nassib leaves. It's time for Torrence Brown to make his move.

DT: Not much from this group yesterday. We know that A. Johnson & Sickels are good players. I assume they wore down in the heat. Next year could be a big problem at DT, especially if Johnson leaves early. That's why I wanted Barney to RS but no such luck.

LB: Wartman's injury was devastating. Our defense fall apart as soon as he went down. Bell looked awesome before he got hurt so we're set at one spot. Cabinda looked OK for a true sophomore but had some problems in pass coverage. But you can't play with just 2 LBs. Wooten is a senior but was lightly recruited. He's not the answer. Reeder & Bowen are not ready. Should we move Farmer back to LB? Will Kline return or is he done? PSU could be good at LB next year if Wartman recovers but it's a complete unknown 2 years from now.

DB: This is a good group of DBs. Lucas & Williams are seniors but Allen, Reid, Farmer, and Campbell are young. I think we're in good shape at DB for the foreseeable future.

ST: Julius looked good but we didn't get to see much. Pasquariello looked good in the first half but was back to his old self in the second half. Farmer looked good returning KOs and Allen looked confident on punt returns. I think we'll be OK this year of Julius holds up and we've got top level recruits coming next year.

For this year we desperately need another LB but we don't have one. That could mean the difference between a very good defense and a marginal defense. On offense the entire scheme needs to change. Maybe we need Jay's spread HD or O'Brien's NASCAR. We definitely need a QB that can move. I don't see that happening because Franklin doesn't seem willing to change things up. The OL is what it is. Working on fundamentals isn't enough.

Going forward we should be good at WR, RB, DB, and ST. DT is a huge concern next year but LB s/b OK if Wartman returns healthy. QB can't be much worse regardless of what happens.

I thought Sickels played well. In on several tackles

That's funny because I thought Sickels crashing in and losing containment cost PSU a coup,e of scores and allowed Temple to sustain scoring drives. Not arguing with you. Just my observation.

Some of my thoughts:

QB Don't know what to say here. Where are the blitz equalzing passes to the TE/RBs across the middle? Why can'y we execute a WR screen?
OL Don't know what to say. Palmer looked completely unready in the spring game and yesterday. It is tough for the OL to look good when the DE just runs right by him. Not that the rest of the line looked good either. Maybe just let them go and run 20 screen passes a game.
WR Seems like a ton of talent. Geno Lewis dropped two passes in the opening minutes (I know one was a little behind him, but he still neeeds to catch it and walk ino the endzone. He drops way too many passes and makes difficult catches after bobbling it.
RB Lynch is JR eligibility
WR
DE Nassib is a SR that was a former walk-on. He is solid but is not especially explosive. He should be fine with rotation but likely not to creat a lot of pressure on his own. Sickels is only a SO so we will see. It is hard not to expect a step down from Barnes and Olaniyan. These guys were solid and occasionally explosive.
LB As you pointed out lsoing Wartman is devastating. Playing him on STs knowing LB was our poorest depth position to me is a huge mistake. Can't understand the thought process here. I would move Cabinda inside. He looks like he weighs around 250, no surprise he would be somewhat of a liability in pass coverage. Wooten looked completely lost. I hope Bell is ready next week. The true Fr are not the type of guys ready to play right now. Not sure we have an answer here.
DB Sure we're lodaded with depth here and what seems like talent. But where were the big plays, big hits? The Temple QB was incredibly inaccurate last year and he did better than OK against us yesterday.

You say "wore down in the heat" a lot. But how about they just wore down mentally. Wartman going out was huge, but our Offense getting 9 first downs the entire game and I think only one drive longer than 4 plays since the first quarter:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/playbyplay?gameId=400763497

That is what wore them down.

LdN

Agree. The defense wore down both mentally and physically.

How many plays did Bell miss? How many did he play hurt? It's amazing how much the defense fell off after Wartman went out. They shouldn't have been worn out mentally or physically on Temple's 93 yard TD drive before halftime or on their game tying FG during the first possession of the second half.

yes they took advantage of Sickles over committing inside and ran outside for long gains. I think that is Temple coaches up in box seeing something (Sickles crash inside) and making adjustment to make advantage. But that is what in game coaching is all about and what right now PSU does not seem able to do

Sad really - Palmer not ready to play AT ALL. The guy does not belong on the field....why??

Hack - It's over, feel bad for him, but it's 50% on him, see the rush, move your feet, throw the ball away.

Coaching - scary - I mean come on - this is the best you can do Donovan? This is big time college football and your running a small town high school offense, he does not belong at Penn State.

I disagree there's no optimism, there's next year and the year after and if things don't improve significantly, then there's the hunt for a new head coach. Maybe Matt Rhule has an interest?

For this first time I question the Franklin hire....was it mistake? Too soon to tell, but not looking good.

Top folks on the hot seat (imo)

1) Donovan - change or be gone. You are embarrassing the team and the school. 1941 since we lost to Temple until your awful playcalling. Where is this guy? Does he have to face the media?
2) Herb Hand - A whole year to improve and this is your result? - Stop the silliness on twitter and focus on your job. Embarrassing.
3) Rahne - Looks clueless when Hack comes to the sideline and yells this and that.
4) Gattis - Loaded talent and they did not look good. Probably back to the schemes but dropped passes, poor separation.
