Brian Courtney strikes again

At some point soon, I'd like us to start looking for a 184/197

Why - we have a load of them with mucho eligibility right now - Cassar, Stout, Nevills. Also, don't discount the possibility of Rasheed and/or Bo ending up their for a year a la Quentin.

PSU is always looking to add talent. At the same time, they do try to balance things. Ideally, they like to have a future starter in the room for a RS year, before competing. Things don't always work that way, but that is how PSU tries to plan things.

Looking at PSU's roster, you have the following:

Bo Nickal - will be a RS soph next year, and wrestled 174 this season
Shakur Rasheed - will be a RS soph next year, and wrestled 165 this season
Matt McCutcheon - will be a RS junior next year, and wrestled 184 this season
Kellan Stout - will be a RS fresh next year, and wrestled 184 in Opens this year
Anthony Cassar - will be a RS soph next year, but was not on the team or wrestling this season due to his shoulder injury at Junior Worlds
AJ Nevills - will be a true fresh next year, wrestled 195 this season in high school, where he won the California State Championship

Let's look at the weights:
197 - if Cassar returns to the team, then between Anthony and Nevills, 197 is likely to be covered for the next 5 years.

184 - Mouse has 2 years of eligibility, and Rasheed has 3 years of eligibility. Stout has 4 years of eligibility, though it's unknown if he'll stay at 184 his entire college career. Nickal is somewhat of a wildcard. He has 3 years of eligibility remaining. I get the impression that he's staying at 174 next year. Beyond that, he may stay at 174, or he may go to 184.

While there are some questions concerning Nickal and Stout's weight, McCutcheon's injuries, and Cassar's status, it does appear that PSU has 184 and 197 covered pretty well over the next several years.

This staff has shown that they'll go all over the country to get someone that they want. With that caveat, I think they're quite aware of Mike Beard, who's a sophomore at Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA), and wrestled 182 this season, where he won National Preps.

Sorry, I was referring to current sophomores in HS. Juniors next year. I know it is a little early to begin the process, but it is a concern I have. By the time they come out of RS, they should hit the ground running.

I think Tom hit on one sophomore they would be looking at, and, yes, it is likely that there will be somebody in that weight in the 2018 or 2019 classes. It's really, really early for that though. These kids can't have an official aid offer on the table for over 15 months (2018) or 27 months (2019).

Thanks Tom. We both replied at the same time, and appear to be thinking similarly. Only you used more words and covered the issue better! I was referring to current sophs who after RS would be ready to break into the lineup in 4 years. I'll keep an eye on Beard. Thanks

It is almost embarrassing to discuss a concern 4 years from now, but it is the silly season.

Heard Francis Duggan wants to play football at the next level. Speaking of Sophomores Duggan knocked off fellow Sophomore Ian Malesiewski (Cadet Fargo Double AA) for 5th/6th at Flo last weekend after Malesiewski took out the #1 seed in the Quarters.

Imagine if the national tournament was determined by duals and a guy won it for his team by wrestling like a turd for 7 minutes and faking a concussion. Great idea JRob!

FWIW, The current model doesn't prevent a guy wrestling like a turd, faking a concussion and helping his team win either.

The likelihood of it helping his team win is greatly diminished in the national tournament vs. a dual meet.

Diminished yes, but not prevented.

JRob didn't make Ryan wrestle like a turd. The turd still lost his match. The turds team still lost. Probably 80% of Nolfs opponents are going to attempt to turd(verb) the match when they wrestle regardless if in dual or tournament. 100% of the time Nolf is going to try to smash the turd. Using that match as an indictment against Duals and JRob just feels out of left field.

I'll say prevented for 2 reasons:
- Nobody wrestles at nationals to minimize how badly they lose.
- Has nationals ever been decided by the 0.5-pt difference for MD vs. TF or TF vs. pin? The likelihood of it happening due to one match of shenanigans is so small as to be negligible.

No, J Rob did not make Ryan do that. But he does keep pushing the national title being duals-based, despite the obvious incentives for guys to take one for the team and wrestle to not lose. So he's complicit.

1. I would disagree in some cases of complete mismatches. Initially as matches start, I agree with you, but as the tide shifts in a match game plans change. Plenty of wrestlers that are losing get dinged for stalling. That could imply they are attempting to minimize their defeat. I have also seen wrestlers layoff with 6 point deficits towards the end when facing another team in the team race. They concede the defeat instead of the risk/reward of attacking.

2. Definitely more unlikely, but still possible. Every point matters and their have been some close races. Perhaps not a .5 difference (I do know a MN D2 team lost a tie for a championship by .5), but a dec. vs a tech or pin or a couple bonus points could have an impact in determining a champion. Everybody says bonus points win championships, preventing bonus could prevent one.

3. The whole reason I engaged in this discussion is cuz you threw JRob under the bus and at his age that isn't healthy. A more direct complaint, based on the OP's scenario, could have been directed to Jake Ryan's father/coach who is also a huge advocate for duals determining a champion, perhaps more so than JRob.

4. thats all I really have to say. I used to be pro dual, but my opinion shifted somewhere. If a hybrid model that made sense, or two seasons were developed I would support that. I don't see those occurring anytime soon. I enjoy the current model and agree it will consistently produce the most consistent result (the "best" team winning). I disagree that the "best" team needs to always win to validate the championship. People love cinderellas and upsets, if a Edinboro knocks off everybody (regardless of format) for a title people will love it. Could create an added element of drama and excitement. Like I said I am fine with the current model and love attending. Changing it could hurt the fan experience.

5. I lied sorry. I find the debate of duals vs individual to be tiresome and drawn out. I will support whatever is decided as I will always support wrestling. Kinda dig the bowl setup as a concept to develop. Sorry for engaging in a discussion I don't care to have. I understand your points and Neither of us are necessarily wrong. JRob is my boy, keep his name out yo mouth! :)

Getting back to the original thread..how do you guys think a Lee-Courtney match plays out? Are you ready to say that Lee pins or tech falls him?

Lee is a totally different level of any wrestler anywhere in the nation with the possible exception of Hall. Big Courtney fan, not at that world champion level yet.

1978 was decided by .5 points.

Getting back to the original thread..how do you guys think a Lee-Courtney match plays out? Are you ready to say that Lee pins or tech falls him?
Courtney got majored by Karam earlier this year, so yes.

I certainly didn't presume Courtney would give him a go...just wondered how much of a gap there would be. I mean he's beaten 3 state champs (several of them handily) and just majored the #2 kid in the country in the span of about 2 weeks.

Lee just TF previously undefeated #4 in the country 15-0 in the 2nd after not wrestling for how long with shoulder surgery? Not taking anything away from what Courtney has recently done, but there is nobody on Lee's level. I'd be interested for those in the know how he fares against Nico right now.

I believe the kid Courtney beat prior Mejia was a state champ too.

Kid is on a tear.

I think Courtney would give Spence a good match...Be nice to get him too. He will be 133 or 141

Well he seem's to be at it again. Courtney moves into the Quarterfinals with 2 TF's and 2 Falls in his first 4 matches.

Speaking of Courtney, in Willie's Flo Rankings this week (the penultimate HS rankings for this season), he moved from HM to #7 at 126. That's a huge move, but it reflects his beating 3 former PIAA Champs at PIAAs this year, and then winning FloNationals by defeating Justin Mejia. Willie explained in his video with Ryan that Courtney had been just on the edge (thus a HM), because he didn't have many quality wins. His performance at States and at FloNationals gave him several quality wins, and thus the big bump in his ranking.

At this point, the only underclassmen ahead of him are #2 Daton Fix, and #5 Austin Gomez (from Illinois). 6 of the top 10 at 126 are Seniors, so Courtney should start next season very high in the rankings.
