Brian Milne article I stumbled upon...

Best part was this quote:

“I’ve been a police officer for 11 years and I haven’t lost a foot pursuit yet,” Milne proudly stated. He then shared a rather humorous story from his post-NFL career. “I had one guy run from me for a silly reason. We jumped a ditch and I tackled him. He told the judge that he felt like he got hit by Ray Lewis.” The judge’s response to the defendant was equally as funny as he stated, “Dummy. You just got tackled by Brian Milne. He played in the NFL.” Milne also serves on his local SWAT team.

Ha, if I remember correctly he was a pretty good linebacker at Fort LeBoeuf highschool too. For those not familiar, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphona disease and had a tumor roughly the size of a grapefruit removed, similar to Mario Lemieux. Milne ended up missing his entire senior season, and Paterno told him not to worry, the schollie was there whether he ever played again or not. Milne made it back for the East/West Shrine game, an all-star game played in May(?) and was an absolute beast. When he and Witman were both in the backfield in the elephant set, it was a guaranteed TD. Those two were ridiculously good fb's.

I had remembered Brian Milne's story. The fact that Joe remained committed to him despite his health issues does not surprise those of us who knew what Joe was all about.
The other four schools in his top 5 did not remain committed to him (Bowden and Holtz were two of them), so he ended up going to PSU for sure. He grew up right beside my brother so I followed him very closely. Talk about a man among boys in high school. Wow!

In addition to football, he was one helluva of a discus thrower. If I recally, NCAA champ his frosh year when he didn't play football.

He could have made the Olympic team if not for going the NFL route.

Do you think Penn State was his first choice despite the others losing interest?

Milne is one of my favorite all time players. A buddy and I when watching PSU games and it was 3rd and short play, we had something we would always do. We would clench the muscles in our face and neck and with our teeth clenched and in a low guttural voice would say:" Give it to Milne." Worked everytime

Why doesn't that surprise me?

Thought it was an old article as I read it, but it appears to have been published today.
I just remember that 1996 bowl game against Auburn, which I consider one of the best overall games played bad weather. Auburn may have considered it a step down from what they expected and Penn State was one year removed from the Rose Bowl. I just remember the offense not missing a beat after it turned rainy, then muddy, in fact I seemed to turn it up notch. It was one game I regret not taping, but I seem to remember the fullbacks being very involved with runs and receptions.

I recall that being a fun game to watch.

Here you go, the "mud bowl" vs. Auburn.

I loaded TVs for Milne and Jason Collins while working at Sears in the Nittany Mall in the early 90s
