I'm curious what you all are expecting from Brooks this year. It's been well documented that his high level results are all in freestyle. Why do you think he hasn't had the same success in folk yet? Does he struggle on the mat?

After this weekend, I'd be shocked if he's not a champ at some point, but do you think he'll be able to contend for a high aa spot this year? Or will he need a year or two to figure out folkstyle?

From a jealous hawk fan.

I’ll bite and assume this isn’t a complete troll job because of the “jealous Hawk fan” remark...

^4x NHSCA National Champ and 4x Maryland State Champ in HS

^as a SR in HS he won the Lock Haven tournament going 3-0

^as a greyshirt last year he was 6-1
-Only loss was to Cristensen (Wisconsin) ranked #21 by wrestlestat who went 1-2 at NCAAs and was a 4x qualifier **it was also reported that he was pretty ill that day**
-Best win was over Harvey (Army) rankled #13 by wrestlestat and went 2-2 @ NCAAs

^He’s currently 5-0 this season as a true frosh.

his folkstyle seems to be pretty successful to me...

Can you show us the documentation of which you're speaking?

Well, if folk scoring was used this past weekend the score against Zahid would have been 2-0.

Who knows how Folk style might have changed the match, but AB showed he can hang with ZV while on their feet.

As for expectation, I have an open book.

One example would be him winning fargo in 2016 (dominating Julian Ramirez) and then not placing at Super 32 a few months later, losing badly in both losses. I couldn't really find any other national folkstyle results from high school.

Then you have his midlands performance last year. Coming off a dominant summer of freestyle where he beat a ton of good college guys and made the junior world finals, he had a tight match with Ben Harvey and was shut out by Ryan Christenson. Now, those guys are solid, but I suspect Brooks would come close to teching them in freestyle based on his results.

I didn't just pull this out of thin air. It's been discussed many times before, and I'm not trying to put Brooks down. I think he's a potential generational talent.

I know what my eyes have seen. Free and folk are close enough, that all fans can see the talent, and potential for a fabulous college career, including for 2019-20.

From a thankful and grateful Penn State fan.
How has he looked on the mat so far? Any issues on bottom and does he have any top game?

He's right where he needs to be. That along with the best coaches in the country training him in the room. That along with cat like quickness and an ankle pick that would even turn Caels head. He's fine

I think it's fair to say Brooks is currently better on his feet than on the mat. Same could be said for RBY. Similarly, Nick Lee wasn't great on the mat his freshmen year, especially on bottom, but he's steadily improved. Now he's much better at getting escapes and reversals, and he's a hammer on top.

Besides Zahid, I feel AB handles the rest of the field. Top 3 IMO this year. I believe he techd Hidlay, beat last years finalist (both in free). The sky’s the limit. People know talent when they see it

Brooks did win Mat Town Open while still in HS.

I really haven't seen any issues to be honest. He hasn't exactly met the stiffest of competition though. I'm not sure....would have to consult Mr. Brooks but I'm willing to bet since his soph/junior year of highschool his primary focus has been on freestyle even then spending a year at OTC before college. I'm usually concerned about freshman and their mat skills but for some odd reason with Aaron I'm not. No explanation for that so dont ask.

Bottom is a struggle for 99% of freshman, no matter how high their credentials. In high school they don't wrestle from bottom often, and definitely not against kids with the skill and strength of veteran college wrestlers. Generally, it improves as they go along. I like his chances to make a solid impact in March this year, and it will only be up from there.

I think when Mark Hall was interviewed he claimed to have hard time preventing Aaron from escaping while working together. Does anyone else recall that, or was I dreaming that?

He said something like “he doesn’t have the kinds of problems true freshman typically have, like getting out from bottom.” Or something like that. He was ridden much of a period vs Lehigh, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Aaron was working for a big move there. He eventually got the reversal and ride out.

The Lehigh wrestler got called for stalling multiple times for holding onto Aaron’s legs and lost a couple points IIRC. Not effective riding.

If it’s been discussed many times before, why are you asking again?

I saw it when Carr did that to Murin last year. I know it's another generation with different values, but I didn't like seeing that at the time, and for me, it hasn't gotten better with age. Sportsmanship is still a major value to me, and I'm really proud of PSU wrestlers who usually demonstrate tremendous sportsmanship. That means as much to me as their phenomenal wrestling performances!

Murin got the last laugh, beating Carr twice after that.
