Bruce Feldman releases his top 50 freak athletes for this years. LB Micah Parsons is #7 and Jayson Oweh is #6

This years defense is going to be so fun to watch. It is literally loaded from a 2 deep perspective

The nicest part is our first 4 games are cakewalks and will allow the offense time to gel with a new qb and a young talented O

Yes, our first 4 games this year are against glorified junior college teams. We will easily win each of them by the score that CJF chooses.

Over the next few years our early games will be much more challenging. Next year our first 4 games include Virginia Tech and Northwestern. In 2021 we play Wisconsin and Auburn in the first 4 games. In 2022 we play Purdue and Auburn in the first 4 games.

A few years from now we will look back at the good old days when we played inept cupcakes like pitt early in the season.

Woe is me!

Why? We'll beat the teams on the schedule then too.
I agree we will win those games. Our program is doing great and is on the rise. I'm just pointing out that after this year the games won't be against cupcake teams and we might not win each of the first 4 games by 40 or more points like we will this year.

Tickets to cupcake games should be discounted, if not free- who wants to see a game that isn't competitive?

Or are cheap, meaningless wins something to brag about these days?

They are discounted informally. I plan to take my 2 daughters to the Buffalo game and I'll be disappointed if I pay more than $50 for 3 tickets.

Just curious - did he release the top 5 yet? If so, does anyone know who they are?

It's a good schedule for a team that's basically rebuilding offense and special teams. new qb, 2 new running backs, a bunch of new receivers, and 2-3 new starters on the OL - that's a lot.

They get two games where, even if everything goes wrong, they're not in danger of losing. Buffalo and Idaho are not App State.

But I don't see Pitt as a cakewalk. They will have prepared all summer with this game in mind. Nor Maryland -- they have some athletes who can cause trouble and like Pitt they'll be playing like underdogs with no pressure on them.

You have to consider Purdue dangerous based on what they accomplished last year. I'm glad that game's at home. That should be the biggest test of the early season for the D.

PSU should be undefeated and ranked high going into Iowa City -- and that's when we really find out about this team.

If the Panturds are more focused on us than they are on Virginia and Ohio U, they will be coming to Happy Valley 0-2.

Yes. Yes they are. In the current college football "playoff" system every win is important because each loss you have knocks you further from potential placement in the top 4.

Look at Bama's cupcakes - Duke, NM State, Southern Miss & the almighty Western Carolina Catamounts. Does anyone gaf about their "strength of schedule" if they go undefeated or come in with 1 loss? Nope.

So until things change to where only conference champions get into the playoff (8 team playoff) I'd say we're more than allowed to cheer for the "easy" victories at the start of the season.

Agree. And at Md under the lights after the way we plastered them last year... highly doubt it's a rout. If we roll this early schedule (and stay healthy) I'll feel pretty good about the rest of the season.

Pitt doesn’t have the benefit this year if focusing on us all offseason and holding back in their opening game...they open up with Virginia who I believe is picked to win that train wreck of a division.

They’ll happily lose that game if it means beating us, so I wouldn’t be shocked if they did hold back against Virginia conference be damned.

Yeah, we shouldn't be sleeping on Pitt. We certainly have an overall talent edge, but they are the ACC Coastal defending champs and are optimistic for this season. This is their big game of the season and they will be going all out.

If they go 1-11 and the 1 is Penn State, that's a great season for them. Especially this being the last game in the series for the foreseeable future.

Last time at Byrd the crowd had to be 60% PSU fans. That is a problem for them if it happens again.

I'd like to think the threat from teams like Maryland is more limited now that PSU has its OL and DL programs re-established after sanctions. Maryland has some really good athletes but but they were overwhelmed at the line of scrimmage last year. You can only improve your lines so much in one year -- plus, PSU is improving too.

Assuming PSU stays healthy, they'll have Windsor/Mustipher/Shelton at DT with quality depth behind them, and YGM/Toney/Joseph/Oweh and quality depth behind them, and experienced LBers who can all run. A long long way from 2014 and the no-handshake stunt.

That optimism will last about half way through their first game.

The Pitt game doesn’t worry me even a little. That will be a beatdown. Bad matchups for Pitt all over the field. That game will be a beatdown

Maryland on a Friday night will get scary if it’s close in qtr 4 but I doubt it will be

Agree re: Maryland. Remember we were losing to Illinois in the 2nd half in that Friday night game last year before we went on to blow them out. No matter what they say, it just has to be weird preparing for a Friday game. The whole routine is off.

They have a week off before Maryland so they can adjust.

To playing Friday Nights)

Some betting lines just came out, PSU is a 2 TD favorite vs. Pitt. Can't wait to beat them to oblivion and hopefully never play them again unless they get their act together and can start being a perennial top 25 team.

Why did you have bring the Catamounts into this conversation?

Agree. pitt doesn't have a single player who would be in our 2-deep rotation. Chryst's recruits are gone and Narduzzi can't recruit at all. pitt has a pathetic team.
