I have been quite an active proponent of streaming TV on this board over the past couple of years. My Comcast discounts expired a few months back and I’m paying $105 for internet and a TV package I don’t even have hooked up.

I got an offer in the mail for a triple play that would lower my bill and give me 4K TV/many channels so I called to ask about taking advantage of it. I just got off the phone. I wanted to make sure sure said package included BTN and was told by the rep that BTN would no longer be included for ANY Comcast package.

I live in State College and was surprised to hear this. Everything I read said that BTN would still be carried for in-market states. So, I asked repeated clarifying questions, the rep “looked into it” and subsequently confirmed that BTN will no longer be available in the State College area.

Needless to say my conversation ended there and I wanted to give a heads up since this information was different than anything I read online.

I also want to point out that Hulu Live TV is the ONLY streaming service to carry BTN and the State College ABC/Fox affiliates. This means that the only streaming service that will get you all PSU games in State College is Hulu Live TV.

So, get a good router, stop renting your modem, call Comcast to get the cheapest fastest internet possible, and tell them to shove TV up their ass.

BTN's contract with Comcast expires on 8/31/18. Almost ironic that all the first games are on 9/1. Anyway though, there is no agreed to deal as of today which is why you're being told that. At B1G media day, they discussed this. I'm lucky that I have season tickets and will get to see the game live but if they don't come to an agreement by the time I get back home on 9/2, i'll be calling Verizon the next day unfortunately and switching over.

Also...Hulu Live TV streams at 720p. The Hulu catalogue streams at 1080p.

On a 50”+ TV, 720p is a noticeable difference in quality.

FuboTV has the best picture quality of any streaming service for me but doesn’t include locals in my area.

Yes I know this. There’s a lot of misinformation out there and I wanted to give a heads up because AppState is a BTN game. I hope it gets worked out contractually but one never knows.

Agreed sounds like they're both trying to call each other's bluff until the last possible second which is why i'm going to just try to hold out as long as I can as well. I see this somehow getting done on Thursday, August 30th lol

Btw this wouldn't only affect BTN games but FS1 games as well (Illinois on 9/21)

WITH A $20 ANTENNA to receive local channels. If going this way.....
10 things you need to know about Digital TV Antennas

Digital TV antennas have come a long ways since your grandma’s rabbit ears antennas you grew up with. Here is our list of the 10 things you need to know about modern day digital TV antennas.

  1. Broadcast signals are superior to cable and satellite.
There are no paid subscription fees to receive over-the-air (OTA) television, and the picture and sound quality is far superior. In addition, OTA broadcasts are free from the signal compressions used by cable and satellite giving you unadulterated high definition television.

  1. Unlock new local channels.
Cable and Satellite providers do not carry all the channels that may be available in your area. In fact, most broadcast stations offer additional regional programming, absolutely free. These channels include local news, sports, cooking shows, kids programming along with classic TV shows and movies.

  1. All the major networks transmit signals free over-the-air.
You don’t have to pay for some of the content you receive on cable or satellite. The broadcast networks are paid for by advertisers, not subscribers. All your local news, weather, sitcoms, cooking shows, kid’s shows, sports and thousands of movies are available free with an antenna.

  1. ‘HD’ or ‘HDTV’ antennas are some of the more common names used for digital TV antennas.
All digital antennas receive the same picture and sound quality; we just give them a familiar name. Some broadcasts will be in full HD while others are broadcast in standard definition. The real difference is the uncompressed signal received with an antenna.

  1. There are channels, and then there are sub-channels.
Each broadcast station sends out a signal on a frequency (channel). This frequency will provide many ‘sub-channels’ containing your programming. For example, a channel broadcast on channel 8, would appear on your TV as sub-channel group 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 etc. Each channel, aside from its main service can be broadcasting additional programming on 1 to 4 sub-channels simultaneously.

  1. Antennas are a great compliment to any cable or satellite subscription.
Complimenting your television setup with a digital antenna will come in handy the next time your cable or satellite blacks out. During emergencies or bad weather, receiving OTA signals to your TV with an antenna will keep you informed. Much like a radio, the frequency is more reliable and less subject to interruption.

  1. Find the broadcast towers before you choose an antenna.
When choosing an antenna, remember that every set up is unique to the location in which you live. Click HERE to learn more about antenna selection.

  1. Hills, trees, and buildings bend, deflect, and weaken signals.
The digital TV signal is a ‘line of sight’ signal. Typically, the higher you have your antenna, the better the reception. While signals pass through walls and other surfaces, the more obstructions the signal encounters, the weaker the signal and this causes signal disruption. The clearest, most unobstructed view to the broadcast towers will allow the antenna to perform at the highest level.

  1. 3 things you need to receive over-the-air digital broadcast TV
  • A television with a digital tuner (found in any TV manufactured after March 2007)
  • The right antenna for your specific location. See here at Antenna Point
  • The knowledge of broadcast tower locations in your area. Point your antenna toward them and bask in the glory of OTA, free television.
10. There is no magic antenna.

Antennas come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for a specific situation. Some are narrow focused (directional) antennas; while others are multidirectional both with various range capacities. Well-designed antennas, such as our patented Tapered Loop, are tuned for specific frequency ranges and geographical challenges, which will increase your chances for success.

There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution in an antenna. To help you choose the right antenna, view our Antenna Selection Page or Live Chat with an expert now.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Outdoor installation is best, but Antennas Direct antennas can also be installed indoors or in attics. (50% strength/range is lost indoors).
  • Simple, direct connections and installations are best. The more junctions in the installation, the higher the signal loss.
  • Each time the signal is split (to go to another TV) signal strength is reduced, so a low-noise amplifier may be needed to help compensate for the signal reduction.
  • Install the antenna where signal is “present”. Move the antenna to different locations until signals are found. Many times one end of the roof or room has better signal characteristics than the others

Yea I'm pretty much ok up until the Illinois game. But they (both comcast and B1G) need to get their shit together. And as much as I hate Comcast I'm only putting 25% of the blame on them.
Looking at you Jim Delaney. You were driving this bus and are reaping huge rewards from it. Now fix the f'n problem.

I'm fully prepared to put 100% of the blame on Delaney based on general principles, regardless of who is actually at fault. It is only fair to do so.

I highly doubt a deal is in place by 8/30.

so did comcast let you take advantage of the new triple play plan? I keep hearing they wont let existing customers use it, despite mailers addressed to existing customers telling them to look into it.

I just got off the phone with Comcast. They are in negotiations w/the BTN and as of this moment termination isn't a done deal. Should an agreement not be reached, Comcast will notify customers before 8/31, but I'm thinking things will work out.

We are actually gong to keep Comcast for internet and basic package carrying 4 locals. We are doing DirecTVNow for everything else.

Nobody should EVER rent a modem from the cable company. You can buy the exact damn model you are renting for $60 brand new. You pay more than that renting the damn thing every year. Just get the model number from your rented modem, plug that into amazon and buy it. When it comes, if you are truly technologically illiterate, take the cords out one by one and plug them into your new modem. Your new password is on a sticker on the new modem. If you’re still having trouble, literally ask anyone from the ages of 5-40 to do it for you.

Also: Btn will make a deal before the season starts. They always do.

As long as you have internet, there's no need to panic. YouTube TV and a number of streaming services will offer BTN as part of a bundle for about $40.

Just wait until the end of August and if BTN is not on Comcast, then just sign up for Youtube TV. First month is free.

It’s not about BTN. Again Hulu is the only streaming service to offer State College locals. Therefore it is the only way you will be sure to get every PSU game if you live in the area.

They would have, yes. The mailer which prompted my call clearly mentioned existing customers at several points.

Or hedge your bets by signing up now and then canceling if they reach agreement.

No need, since this is an internet thing, you can sign up the morning of the first game and get instant access. It's not like cable where they have to come out and install it. Of course, this assumes you have a streaming device of some sort, or a cable to connect you computer output to your TV.

Well thats not always the case.
Delany and the Roberts family (Comcast) are running neck-and-neck in the 'who do I hate more' sweepstakes.

I gotta pay attention to FS1 not only for PSU but for Villanova basketball.

Delaney is pulling away for me.

I would at least give it a day to make sure everything works and trouble shoot things if it doesnt!

Choose whatever streaming service you want that carries the big ten network and then get a digital antenna. They aren't expensive. I know people don't like to have to hit the "input " button on the remote.. . But it really is that simple.

Actually, if it wasn't for Delany, you would still be paying $20 to ESPN for College Game Plan to watch App State, and additional $20 to watch Akron. Good luck on ever watching any Penn State basketball or wrestling.

If I'm Delany, I tell Comcast the cost to them goes up .10 cents in market every day until 9/1. At that point, if they still want to carry it, it will cost then $3.00 in market.

There are other alternatives out there. Fu(k Comcast.

Actually I wouldn't because I have season tickets. Its the away games that are my "issue".
As for bball and wrestling ehhh can live with it or without it.
and I don't think it was that much anyway. I thought it was in the 3-5 dollar range for ordering a game back in the day.

No can do for a lot of areas in State College. They won't get the ABC/Fox affiliate even with an amplified antenna due to topography.

Really ? I've never run into a problem like that. I know my parents live in the middle of nowhere but they can still pick.. .What would be their locals with a digital antenna.
