Johnny Barbato (hard-throwing RP who has had AAA level success w Yankees).

A righty.

I would think that if they can find someone who will take Antonio Bastardo (even if it requires the Bucs to eat 1/2 of AB's $6 million salary) that AB will be adios.

The Bucs are way skewed towards lefties in the pen - and the organization really seems to like those 95+ mph guys - and AB has been getting absolutely rocked thus far this spring (in Florida, and the first two weeks of the season)

Success in AAA, which is where the Bucs are sending him, but got shelled in his stint with the Yankees last year.

There's a reason he was available on the "free, take one" shelf :)
I think NYY were simply out of "40 man roster" space (and had 40+ guys theybliked better :) ) - and the Buccos had an opening.

(Though it was a TINY sample at the MLB level - 13 innings, 13 hits, 15 Ks at least idicates some potential as a "last guy in the bullpen" option. More than your typical "freebie")

That said, if they could swap him in for Bastardo, I bet they would :-( .

Hell, if they could get anyone to eat any appreciable part of Bastardo's salary, I'd reckon they'd give Schugel or LaKind or any other of a number of guys a shot.

The pirates and every other team make about twenty of these transactions a year.

And often times with the same players (I think the Bucs had/lost one guy about three different times last year........ as they juggled their "40 man")
