Bullitt chase scene on TCM now!

Loved the music and car sounds in addition to the great camera work.
They must have had some problems with the chase cars taking air on those steep S.F.streets.

The guys from gas Monkey recreates the scene a few years ago and even with all new car suspension technology and parts it still beat the sh&t out of the car they built and they had to limit the takes to just 2 I think before the car got totally wrecked - amazing what Steve McQueen and crew did back in the day.

Interesting read. I had only seen bits and pieces of the movie and chase scene over the years until on one of my last airplane trips in 2019 I got to see the whole movie. I'm a Mustang guy and I thought the Dodge Charger was a faster and the better car in that chase scene and the article confirms it.

The next time you watch this, count how many times they pass the same VW bug. Kinda ruins the chase.

Some guy bought the mustang from the studio in the early 1970s. It was beat up but he kept it. Steve McQ wanted to buy it back but he refused. Last I saw his heirs were putting it on the auction circuit.

Nothing like Bullitt (Hence Forgotten), but still found it a little interesting.

The movie used two different mustangs and the one that did the chase scenes was sent to the junkyard after the shoot because it was basically trashed by the time they were done. The one that McQueen tried to buy back was the regular driving car from the film. Supposedly the one that was junked has been found.

As for the movie, I find it rather boring outside of the big chase.

And keep track of the hub caps coming off the charger....

And look at the Mustang after sliding into the dirt the next time it is shown (clean).....

.... lots of details don't really add up, but the chase, the speed, the hits, .... are still a work of art. And the dark green mustang was and still is iconic......

And the rest of the movie is great if you are a fan of McQueen and Bisset.

I love all the scenes where McQueen tells, in one way or another, Vaughn and his politics to stick it, and get out of McQueen's business.

"you sent us to guard the wrong man...."

"Get the hell out of here...."

McQueen really was the "king of cool"

At one point McQueen just walks way, past Vaughn, after being ordered to deliver the witness (then dead), saying "excuse me"...

I think the Bullitt car chase scene is undoubtedly #1.

That said, an underrated one was Sean Connery and Jill St. John in Diamonds are Forever imo:

Love McQueen. I tried to watch it when it came on and was interested to see if I liked it as much as I did in 1968 when it came out. The car chase is great but alone cannot carry the film. Overall I’d give it a “Meh” rating as a film. Take out the car chase and it’s just ho-hum.

Bullitt car chase is the best. Saw it on the big screen and seemed like I was in the car as it was flying over the cross streets. Will watch that movie every time it is on just to watch the chase.
