Cael wins Intermat Coach of the Year

A little surprised he won this over Coach Pop and Dresser.

The most impressive thing about Sanderson, according to the article, was that he won the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal at the age of 5 years old (he was born in 1979). Cael is now in Chuck Norris legendary status. This will certainly piss off the HR board even more about Cael

Quote from the article

"The just-concluded season was golden for the 1984 Olympic gold medalist and his wrestlers. Penn State compiled a perfect 16-0 overall record (9-0 in Big Ten dual meets) for 2015-16, then capped that with team titles at the 2016 Big Ten conference championships and 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. At this year's Nationals, Sanderson's Nittany Lions clinched the team title during Saturday morning's action. By the time the finals had been completed that night, Penn State could claim 123 team points -- a considerable distance ahead of second-place Oklahoma State's 97.5 -- along with two individual champs in Nico Megaludis at 125 pounds, and Zain Retherford at 149."

That's pretty funny. However the Soviet bloc countries boycotted the 1984 Olympics so that made it easier for 5 year old Cael. :D

I like this bit:

What is remarkable is the extent to which Cael Sanderson gets his wrestlers to compete as he did -- creating angles, seeing not-obvious scoring opportunities and seizing them -- sometimes in creative ways. It is rare to see a Penn State wrestler get out-scrambled. They are always in shape, offensive-minded and compete in a way that is always more about wrestling than it is about brawling. In short, Cael Sanderson has developed a style that is not only successful, but is fun to watch and helps promote the sport of wrestling."

Careful, Intermat. Some might consider all of this praise some form of favoritism and cast you as a PSU lackey.

Obviously all of this praise CAN'T be because Cael knows how to coach ...

Congrats, Coach Cael!

Like the 1984 reference maybe they erred and the award is recruiter of the year?

Surely this isn't for "coach" of the year....that would be just silly.

Congrats, Coach Cael!
We already have a Flo Rep as part of our recruiting team, does this mean that Intermat is also going to name a PSU recruiting coordinator?

I am not even sure he can recruit. I mean he is located in the middle of all the talent in the world and they just show up ready to wrestle.

The question is, who are the best recruiters after Cael? Would you agree John Smith & Tom Ryan followed by maybe Rob Koll, Kevin Dresser, Brian Smith and Zeke Jones?

You know, I think you're right. It's like sitting under a prime apple tree, they just fall in your lap. We have been giving Cael way more credit than he has earned.;)

Tom Ryan and his staff are doing a fantastic job recruiting.

Dresser is doing something another Iowa grad found too difficult. For at least this season he has surpassed the Hawks.

Smith is Smith. He recruits a bunch of tough assed kids and makes them into tough assed wrestlers.

(Walks away slowly from no mention of Brands.)

Every year Tim Flynn gets more talent than his fewer rides would seem to allow. So did Stutzman when he was at Bloomsburg.

Franklin Restores The Roar figured it out. Sanderson started instructing his wrestlers to employ Olympic style technique in the world of folks style and the results have been off the charts.
