I didn’t see a thread on this or even comments about it, so apologies if I’ve overlooked an existing discussion. Cael gave his weekly presser yesterday. Here's a link: GoPSUSports. CStar was the guest wrestler this time. No significant revelations but some interesting tidbit. Here are some key points I noticed:

Cael Comments:
  • They weren’t sure Howard was going to be able to wrestle the Michigan match, so it was great to have him take the mat. He beat a good competitor and the coaches weren’t surprised by the outcome.
  • They were happy with the Michigan win but no one left the dual feeling completely satisfied, which Cael said is a good sign that people want to get better.
  • Berge is going to be in every match regardless of opponent. He has lofty personal goals and the coaches fully expect him to score points for the team.
  • The coaches’ #1 priority is to make sure the team is fresh and ready to roll for the B1G tourney and Nationals. He is confident our best wrestling is going to happen at Nationals.
  • Monday’s Maryland dual is the last dual meet before the B1G tourney. They are working with Rutgers to have them send a group of guys to SC for some extra matches on Monday assuming it is permitted by B1G rules. But it will not be a separate dual. Cael was complimentary of Goodale for trying to help make this happen, especially since Rutgers doesn’t need the extra matches.
  • Regarding 149 – They are “still looking for the guy who will bring the most energy and belief that they can win.” Sometimes coaches have to make tough decisions on picking the starter. He also dispelled the notion repeatedly emphasized by a certain poster here that wrestle-offs are the final arbiter of picking a starter. Cael said: “For the most part in our sport you can do a wrestle-off and the winner goes. But we’re trying to figure out what’s in the best interest of the team and make sure everyone has a shot, … but it just comes down to making a decision as a coaching staff.”
Carter Starocci’s comments:
  • The loss at Indiana stung a little bit but he took some good lessons from it. Markie reached out to him immediately with encouraging words and said one match doesn’t define him.
  • Carter doesn’t lack self-confidence. About beating a higher ranked opponent, he said he’s the #1 guy on the mat and prepares for each match regardless of anyone’s ranking.
  • “I know I’m the best guy out there and I just need to go out there and prove it.” He’s #1 and prepares for each match the same way.
  • He frequently wrestles with Cael and said his best competition is in the PSU room, so the outside competition doesn't worry him.
  • He repeatedly mentioned the importance of listening to the coaches and feels he can make improvements at every position.
As a bonus, there’s a short interview of BearClaw at the link below. He’s a very impressive young man.

Spent a little time chatting with Terrell today. He is a very impressive kid...on and off the mat.

The quote above is from last year's Edinboro Open thread. Now you know why I'm so high on him. He will be way better than most of you think. He's a great young man and a great all around athlete. He had D1 soccer offers too. Don't sell him short. He may have an NCAA Championship, B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, and MBA before he leaves State College.

82bordouex, do you remember how did he did there? I went up to Edinboro 2 years ago (I think) and wanted to see the new kids Seth Nevills and Michael Beard. Both came away with the coolest 1st place trophies I ever saw. Sasso was also on the mats that day.

Good tournament to watch some upcoming studs. Or kids trying to improve their RPI.

As to Terrell, pretty impressive resume and to think he traveled 2,000 miles to continue to reach for his goals.

He did great. Lost to Kolodzik(returning AA) 10-0. Basically out man-muscled. But he road him for 1:40 in the 3rd period. Just couldn't do anything with him.

2 years ago all of those you mention were in high school so it must have been last season when they were all redshirting. Well Nevills wasn't because Cassar got hurt.

2 years ago Beard and Seth were grayshirting, but won the Boro Open. Last year, Carter and TB also went. I think Beard and Carter won. But I’m not certain.

The question was Edinboro and this was Clarion ... but it never gets old.

CStar definitely won, he was undefeated as RS
Yeah I meant Beard, but didn’t make that clear. This was one of Carter’s matches

Thanks for sharing and for your summary! 149 remains absolutely fascinating. I have no clue which way it will go.

Okay, recognizing that this will put me at risk of being a longer running joke than Carton-Pletcher, Aruba, Punching Bag Nico, etc, with that smile and attitude I have to believe Terrell could have “a line at his door” if he so desired. And for the record I am comfortably on the “majority team.”

This Cael guy has obviously never been in a High-Level wrestling program.......because this is NOT how it is done. :)
