Cal Is F*'d Because Of Its Stupid Stadium Deal

B) now how many of those students athletes at Cal did Sandy admit?? I would guess none. If a school has academic problems with its athletes it's on the school not the AD not the FB/BB coach they don't admit anyone. And you know that

Keep making excuses for the dumbshit. Here's a story that summarizes Barbour's attitude toward the "student" part of "student-athlete" while she was the AD at Cal. My brother is a good friend and neighbor of Mike Montgomery who was the BB coach at Cal. The grad rate of the basketball program was worse than that of the football team, a lot worse. Montgomery had been the BB coach at Stanford, so he should have known better. After the story of Cal's grad rates broke, my brother asked Montgomery, "Mike, how could you let it happen?" Montgomery's response, "No one asked me about it, they never discussed it with me, not even once." So what's Barbour's excuse, the Nuremberg defense?

You didn't answer the question, how many did she admit? New question, why didn't The academics at Cal supply the needed support? The basketball coach didn't know how many of his guys were in trouble and did nothing about it? And he puts it on the AD? Please. And you know better

Oh, Montgomery knew the academic status of his basketball players, but his job was to win basketball games and he was never held accountable for their lack of performance in the classroom. Whose responsibility was that? Barbour lauded him every time Cal made a post season tourney, which was every year he was HC, but never took him to task over his grad rates.

^^^^. another "dumbshit" ^^^^

I don't mind a few renovations, but why a complete overhaul? The 3 tier design is a poor plan in my opinion. Take a look at the elevation of the highest tier. If you have a seat there, you are in a separate universe, with many seats higher than the highest of the north end zone. Your cheers will die in the wind. The players on your TV screen will be bigger. I hope a different design is approved. http://footballstadiumdigest.com/2017/03/penn-state-releases-beaver-stadium-renovation-details/

It looks like the top of the current south endzone would be the height all the way around, excluding the north endzone. I agree, that's way up there. I never sit in the upper south endzone for that reason.

I'd say it was the people that admitted them to Cal, which certainly wasn't Montgomery or Sandy. It sounds to me the academic people let them both down.

ACGT: This is hardly your standard mortgage loan. The underlying security is only part of the equation. This is a loan to a public entity that is ultimately supported by tax dollars.

In 2012, USGS scientists said the fault is due for another magnitude 6.8 to 7.0 earthquake, with the California Geological Survey concurring, stating they believe there is a 31 percent chance of a magnitude-6.7 earthquake or greater along the Rogers Creek-Hayward Fault in the next 30 years.... That number goes up as the time horizon goes out. I sure as shit wouldn’t bond on that!

you always know when you've asked Barry a question he cant answer, as you get a response like this!!! LOL
You didn't ask me a question....... dumbshit.
You asked Art a question....... dumbshit
(not that I WOULD answer a question, IF one WERE asked, from a ...... dumbshit..... like you)

I was simply making a comment.
A comment that you are a .......dumbshit.

Much of Cal's campus is impacted by the fault line.

Engineering studies identified score's of structures on Cal's campus that would be at significant risk the event of such a quake I think the total number of such structures was somewhere in the area of 100 in number - from Dormitories to Classroom Buildings, to Parking Garages, to Museums, to Athletic Facilities......Memorial Stadium was one of the structures.

TOTAL cost estimates to bring ALL of the structures up to the necessary levels of seismic resistance was about $700,000,000 - - - - - - of which, the cost to include seismic resistance into the Memorial Stadium redo was $14,000,000 (cost-wise, the necessary improvements to Memorial Stadium were about 20th on the list....i.e. there were about 20 structures who's seismic resistance upgrades would have been more expensive than what was required for the Stadium).

I am not sure how many of the identified structures have been retro-ed or replaced since then.

Nope - - - - only you and a couple of your special cohorts.

You've worked hard, and you've earned the distinction. :)

as I said, anytime you have nothing, you just call somebody names. Again you have nothing, but you felt like you needed to chime in on a question I asked Art, just to try to belittle somebody.

Of course you'd try to blame someone else for Barbour's inadequacies. And the "academic people" don't work in a vacuum. If they admit athletes who are inadequately prepared academically, it's at the behest of the coach. Montgomery wouldn't deny responsibility there. The "academic people" also provide support and monitor classroom performance of their athletic charges. At a very minimum, they report it to the coach. If Barbour had any concerns or wanted to be more hands on, she could have required status reports from the "academic people" directly. Did she? We don't know. If she did, then she looked the other way. One thing we do know is that she never asked Montgomery and I be surprised if she asked Tedford.

I'm sure you'll blame the higher ups. It's entirely possible that they didn't care. Does that absolve Barbour? Not in my book. If she were concerned about the welfare of student athletes in her charge, she should have strenuously lobbied for adequate support. If she didn't receive it, she should have resigned. As it is, given her history, she comes across as a hypocrite when she mouths the pieties at PSU.

Thanks for you response. I don't know what went on at Cal. From the way I look at things, I am pretty sure Sandy was the fall guy (gal) when shit hit the fan over their upgrades, stadium, bonds etc. So they needed something else, so they piled on with the academic stuff. I haven't heard of many AD's getting canned for the academic stuff other than say a cheating scandal. So throwing that academic stuff at her feet in just some red herring. Resign? a what $600,000 gig when you have no where to go, except you know, going to the academic support side, which is what she did.

now go back and look what she did at Tulane, hired Tommy Bowden, he had a good run, goes off to Clemson. She wants to hire DickRod, BOT has no, we want to hire Chris Scelfo, one of our own. (BTW why did his name never surface in the Jim Donnan scandal?). She resigns and goes to ND. Looking back, while I like Chris and think DickRod is a Dick, I think she may have made the better call.

OMG - is this guy ^^^^ Sandy's long-lost love child?

No one could be that stupid? Could they?

Shoulda' stopped at sentence 2, Einstein :)

My wife, who graduated from PSU in 1982, reacts with mild revulsion any time I refer to "the Beav." She insists that no one called it that, at least no one she knew when she was in school. I told her that term is used here by a number of posters. I wonder whether it is widely used or not.
Wally called his brother "the Beav" every now and then and I occasionally refer to the Beaver stadium as “the Beav”.

Are you really that naive? Barbour was the point person on the stadium redo, the contemporaneous construction of the Simpson Training Center, and the financing of the overall project. The retrofit of the stadium to prevent a seismic catastrophe was dropped in her lap; the Simpson center and the financing were all hers. She got fired because what she presented to her management was a pile of shit. In common parlance it's called incompetence. Just because a group of senior people at Cal signed off on her work doesn't excuse the fact that she presented a pile of shit. You produce shit, you get fired. Now, it's entirely possible that other people at Cal should have been fired as well, but her termination was righteous.

I guess we should call Rec Hall "Wally".

Oh boy, did you sit in or step in a pile of horse $hit today. The retort in your posts on this thread have been antagonistic.

By the way, caught our first bear in the early morning hours yesterday. On the way to work I stopped at the trap to poke him a little with a stick, just like you're poking ME.

I'm just having fun. Nothing personal. No attack intended. I think my use of  appeared antagonistic towards you. That wasn't my intention. Rather, that was my way of saying that I was goofing around.

Stop it Bob, of course I know you messing with my head (well messing around in it). Now you made me feel bad. Beside I very seldom am alarmed by insults or attacks, I forget them as quickly as $shit runs through a goose.

Those are pics of the bear trap on the farm Tuesday and Wednesday. The bear inside was very docile, my son suggested the Game Comm. probably doped the bait.

The problem is that the entire City of Berkeley (and the neighboring City of Oakland) is at risk if there is a significant quake on that Fault. The damage would not localized to the land sitting immediately over the Fault. Where are they gonna build a new stadium? Fifty miles away from the school?.

Land acquisition costs are not so much a problem in Happy Valley. Not that they need any additional land, but I trust you get my point.

Don't take this the wrong way but remember, this is Penn State.

When you look up the definitions of "Malfeasance" and "Incompetance" in the dictionary it reads "see The Pennsylvania State University"

Making colossal expensive mistakes is what "We" do.

Being even more cynical, I wonder if that's one of the reasons Barbour was hired.

My last sentence should more accurately read this way "Making colossal expensive mistakes with taxpayer funds is what WE do. "

My original belief was that Barron hired her because he wanted a woman for the job. More recently, I've added that she's also the perfect stooge.

When Cal made Sandy 'available', and PSU was looking for an AD, even I did not have the nerve to post, Sandy Barbour next AD at PSU, mark it down!

Wasn't much to pick from.....once the "screening criteria' were engaged:

Deb Yow, Julie Herman, maybe Chris Ponsky, and Sandy Barbour

They nailed it by plucking the worst of the bunch (of course, the others may have turned them down :) )

There were probably any number of qualified female AADs to choose from. They almost certainly lacked the "stooge" qualification, which further cements my belief of it being a reason.
