Awesome. I hope you didn’t kill him like so many other morons do when they see snakes.

No, some guy was trying to get him off the road when we drove by. It looked like he was beating it, we turned around and went back, my friend flipped out on him until she realized he was trying to save it. It kept trying to come back on the road and he was hitting the road with a stick to scare it back up the bank.

That’s a pretty snake. I raked a huge garter snake out of my shrubs while cleaning up all the fallen branches from the recent storms. He was not happy with me one bit. Gave me a big hissy stare and took off. I live right next to a farm so I’m glad he’s there hopefully feasting regularly on tick carrying critters.

That is great. Always exciting to see a rattler...if you see it first. Glad it’s still alive.

Killing rattlesnakes = no gud. They represent a level of ecosystem that is disappearing : you can walk through the world , or you can kill it. How big is your truck ?

edit: I'm gonna find some pictures and get back to this. Snakes are cool ! Big big aggressive defensive snakes are REALLY cool if your 8 feet away ( and be quick !). I guess beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder :)

I stepped over two of them one time on the MST. One scampered back into a hole. The other was really pissed and stood its ground. Walked a wide circle back from whence I came. That was when I decided I wasn't hiking in snake season anymore without gaiters.

No reason to kill any snake. But it occurred to me if I was bit that day I would have maybe had a problem just a few miles in off the road. A good buddy of mine had his wife bitten by a rattler, they lived up on the top of 7Mts. She was doing nothing dumb or crazy, got bit walking away from a snake. They did have a dog ahead of them which may have rattled the rattler. She came out of it OK but flown to Hershey because Centre Co. didn't have the antivenom. She got a nice snake tattoo on her leg when it was all over as a tribute. Her leg was swole like a MFer though after the fact.

Had a copperhead crawl across my lap while I sitting on a bolder during a break on a hike along The App Trail. I became the fastest while man for about 30 seconds!

Saw a water moccasin while doing the endurance course during BT in Ft Sill... gave us a reason NOT to let go of the rope across the stream!

I'm not sure I understand our language anymore.

I've happened upon some poisonous snakes while fishing in PA. And was at a friends house at the bottom of Back Mountain in Mifflin County when we found a Copperhead in their dryer. I did not appreciate any of those instances for the beauty of nature.

I had a logger get bit by a copperhead on one of my jobs. When he cut the tree, it landed on the copperhead's tail. When he went to put the choker around the log, he got nailed. He was in the hospital for a few days.

Copperheads smell like cucumbers. I've smelled them in the woods, but never saw any.

Garter snakes have venomous saliva. It's just way too weak for a human to notice

They also have pretty sharp teeth. Unlike rattlesnakes, they don’t inject their venom with their bite. The bite simply opens a wound, they hold on and the venom in their saliva enters the wound. Works great on victims the size of their food. Humans might react like a bee sting — get a little itch in that area.

I've been having a snake problem this summer, it might be from all the rain cause I've never seen so many hanging around the house and yard.
I did have to kill a copperhead though, didn't want to but also didn't want it on my patio.
I had about a 5' black snake draped across my front step when I came home from work the other day. I just moved him along, he wasn't happy about it. LOL.
I ran into a garter snake when I was cleaning up some cabbage leaves on the raised bed.
Geez they're pissy little things. He was way more pissed then the black snake.LOL.

I've heard that they smell like cucumbers but didn't know if that was true or not.

Wow I didn't know that at all. The ones I've seen and the one I saw last week when I was weeding were all in a really foul mood.

Good story. You go outdoors or into back country and see snakes.....and you kill them because you don’t like them. You sound like a great guy. I’ve seen your posts over the years, so I don’t expect this to sink in at all.

Rattlesnakes will rarely bite unless they feel threatened. Copperheads can be aggressive. Water moccasins are downright mean.

See black snakes all the time in my woods in Jersey. More frequent since we put a pool in, although never have seen any in the pool yet. A few years ago there was a baby black snake that i happened upon on the side of the road in front of my house that had just started to eat a frog. Watched it over the next 30 minutes go from have just bitten the frog head to half way in to a giant lump in the snake. Probably took about an hour to eat and it didn't really move for another hour after that.

An Indonesian woman was recently found in the belly of a python, clothes and all were swallowed whole.

We've been in snake season here in NC for a few months now. Few years ago, first day of archery I had a rattler coiled up about 5 feet from the ladder of my treestand. Gave him a wide berth and went about my business. he wasn't bothering anyone. Snake boots are a MUST down here. I've heard of WAY too many people stepping over logs and getting nailed in the back of the leg. I don't want to be miles into a scout and have to try to get out after being bitten by a snake. I'd highly suggest that anyone that walks through the woods in "snake season" where there are venomous snakes, gets snake boots.

In a thread a while ago someone gave a link to (what) looked like a really good snake bite kit. It looked like it was some type of compression bandage.
If anyone knows what the product was or the link it might be worth it to post again.
I know we have a lot of hikers, fisherman, hunters and mt. bikers on here.
I do a lot of hiking in the SW and so far have only run into 1 Rattle snake while hiking in Joshua Tree. But I think it would be a good idea to carry a kit just in case.

I haven't seen your posts over the years. I'm not even slightly offended by any judgment of yours.

What qualifies as a "snake boot" for this purpose?

A boot specifically made to prevent a snakes fangs from penetrating the boot and you. Typically made out of rubber, leather, neoprene, polyurethane or a combination of those materials. They usually run up to the bottom of your knee. Mine look similar to this; Thankfully, I've never had to find out how well they work.

Been struck at three times rattlesnakes.....once while mountain biking !!! My friend pointed out it would have been interesting if it got in the spokes :) All three I have determined were bluffs as earlier poster mentioned.
Also close quartered with snake in strike pose many times. Here, being an avid outdoors guy it's just part of the game. Killing any ONE individual snake you come across is like thinking you will die by terrorist event. Not in the numbers. That's why I let the beauties be...…

Came across an ULTRA aggressive Mohave that friends had warned me about near the lower end of the grand canyon on a very specific trail. . That is a cool thing to see. I chalk it up to it's survival instinct: it was big and old and wanted to see tomorrow , can't blame it :) Cheers

I look at snake boots like I look at helmets. When I ride, I ALWAYS wear a helmet, and not a cheap one. My head means too much to me. Same deal with snake boots. With as deep as I get into my hunting property, I don’t mess around with cost effective stuff. I just got a pair of lacrosse venoms a few days ago because the zipper on my old ones broke.

That looks like the rocky lynx. If that’s them, be careful. That’s the old pair I had that the zipper broke. I’m sure you’ve already seen that the zipper will eat the material sometimes when you pull it up. DO NOT force it. You know how sometimes with a jacket you can force it and it’ll pull through the snag? Not with these. The material is so thick it’ll open up the zipper and you won’t be able to get it back on. Sucks because i really liked those. Super comfortable and not too hot in the summer.

When a younger man 16issh. I use to go to a snake hunting contest in Sinnamahoning PA. The object was to find the longest rattler. Of course I was climbing rock ledges and peaking over to find these critters. I had to be "off." Then again I went hunting these guys with my girlfriends dad. I guess I had to make a statement.
