Cancun shooting

You have to be nuts to go to Mexico on vacation. I went to Acapulco several years ago and if you like soldiers walking around with MACHINE Guns on the beach it’s a nice place. A high school friend of mine and his wife were killed there after being robbed while driving on a road.
I've been to Mexico City, Cancun (multiple times), Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morales (where this recent incident happened) and have never seen any violence or armed police on the beach. It does seem to be spilling into the resort towns more of late, so it's worth paying attention to but I wouldn't make blanket statements like yours about the entire country. Like anything, life has risks. If you want to avoid all of them you'll spend it hunkered down in your house and it will pass you by.

Since we have facto open borders and sanctuary cities where almost certainly the shooters would not be turned over to be deported, these are the types of people that can easily come into the United States and make a bigger profit.
They’d probably be paid for coming here illegally. Plenty of money for illegal behavior.
As I understand it, economic reasons are not grounds for immigration. So just come illegally.

Back in 2013 there was a shootout between Mexican Police and the Cartel in Rocky Point. RP is considered Arizona’s beach since it sits at the top of the Gulf of Californian and is about 3 hours from Phoenix.

That’s the only “high profile” shooting that’s occurred that I can recall. Since then, they found 42 bodies buried in shallow graves in the area. All believed to be related to the Cartel.

I am not sure what the answer is, but let me say that, I was born in Johnstown PA and lived around Altoona when I was a kid. Then in my teenage years, I worked in Red Hook Brooklyn and around NYC. Back in the early 90s in Brooklyn, I remember driving down Hamilton Ave. and seeing huge lines in front of the methadone clinics and zombies walking the streets around 5am when I was on my way to work.

Now, when I go to those parts of Brooklyn its Tesla's and Maseratis. Even today, despite what those cheering on the demise of NYC want to spine it.

Meanwhile though, you have zombies and clinics now in places like Altoona and Johnstown. It's really sad to see.

It is hard to say what the answer is, but whatever we are doing right now isn't working.

Homegrown drugs?

Broken country just to our south. Yes? Well then, you might want to tighten up that border lest more violence come here. Just a thought.

They just supply what we demand. How about we own up to that fact. It's their fault we we have and insatiable appetite for drugs.

York, Harrisburg, and Chester all have higher murder rates than Cancun. Should we not go to Pennsylvania?
Well.... if you have an armed guard I think you will be okay in all three of those PA towns, just like a resort in Cancun The real question is..... without an armed guard, would you rather be in those 3 PA towns or Cancun?

Yes, yes... I get it. The board leftys will say they would feel safer in Yemen than York PA because there are no guns in Yemen 😉

Respectfully, it is an unfair comparison. Cancun is more like that upscale suburban community. If you are comparing the city of Cancun versus the resort area, you get a totally different answer

that’s true of every large city. They have have neighborhoods you probably don’t want to be in along with very affluent areas. If you’ve got 900,000 people it’s not going to be a homogenous mix.

yeah...so it goes back to the larger picture...which is safer, the USA or Mexico? At least in this case, a "safe zone" was penetrated and not so safe. Anomaly or new reality?

There's no such thing as a foolproof system unless you're going to extreme extremes and even then it's impossible to prevent everything. seems like there are a handful of similar instances a year. Not the first or last. I know someone was shot a month or so before we went at a resort earlier this year. Typing this while looking at prices for a trip back next year, I'm more likely to get carjacked on my way to the airport.

Crime down in Tulum is really bad. Wife's friend was robbed and had the shit kicked out of him and we met a couple on our trip who got shook down by the cops, or guys dressed as cops during the first part of their trip before getting to our resort.

yes in some situations in Mexico police are as bad or worse than criminal. Friend of mine's family has house in Baja and he was driving back to LA and someone ran into him on the road Very clear by how his car was damaged that other guy rammed him. Police picked friend up, cuffed, shook down and he did not have any money and so threw him in jail until his family could bring money and pay off pretty much everyone to get out. Was in Mexico jail for like a week. Court and legal documents are a joke and have been altered multiple times and subject to who paying who and who family is who. The guy who hit him is from "connected" family so everything stacked against my friend. And the whole thing is one big ongoing legally sanctioned shake down...........

Yup, we never leave the resort when we go.

I've got several friends who have had similar incidents:
  • one guy manages part of a Mercedes plant and they were given an ID to use if pulled over. They were instructed to NOT open the car door, just show the ID. If the police persisted, just put your hands on the wheel and sit there. He had exactly that happen. The cop kept banging on the driver's window with the butt of his gun. This went on for five minutes before the cop finally jumped in his car and took off.
  • Another was attending an event and got pulled over by a cop directing traffic at a traffic circle after they made eye contact (which his company told him not to do). He was instructed to ask the cop what would make this go away and the cop went ballistic saying he was not corrupt. Then he calmed down and asked how much money my friend had. As instructed, he had a little money in his shirt pocket, each pants pocket, the colsole, in the glove box etc. He made it to the third stop (shirt and two pants pockets) and the cop took the $60 shook his head yes and went away.
  • Lastly, I know a couple that got into a car accident north of Tijuana heading home to LA. One of the people involved was the mayor's daughter. She was driving and went left of center. She had friends and open beer cans. He was sent to jail with a broken jaw and no medical attention. His wife went home and sprung for the $50k in their version of bail. After getting medical treatment and consulting an attorney in LA, they were advised to jump bail and never go back to Mexico again in their lives. That was 30 years ago. But he just died in a hiking "accident" south of LA. He was an avid hiker in his late 50's. On a trail, he's taken many times, was alone and fell over a cliff and died. This is a month ago.
Lastly, I have a friend who got mugged in Mexico city. They beat him and stole his wallet and iPhone. They didn't know how to turn off iCloud so he kept getting photos of them at bull fights and soccer games. The police didn't care and did nothing.
