Chambers: “I feel really good about where we are as a staff and what we’re doing as a program”

Would help to post the full quote:
"I feel really good about where we are as a staff and what we’re doing for this program. My expectations are high. I did not expect to be in this situation. We just have to continue to get better and keep growing,” Chambers said. “But I feel supported by the president and Sandy. I feel their commitment to what we’re trying to do.”

Better yet, a full story.

Do YOU feel “really good” about where we’re at? Don’t be delusional

If they're behind Pat on how the program is going that is truly pathetic. I feel Sandy is behind Chambers and this shows she doesn't give a shit about the basketball program or the fans. Thanks Sandy

Lots of recent discussion on the Penn State Hoops page about Chambers future. It seems that Chambers really is that positive. It might not matter though, because winless in conference and the pushing incident will be difficult to survive.

Pat will be back next year and will take the team to the Big Dance. Trust me Dan. I have inside information.
OK, I really don't, but if I did, that would be it.

LMAO. Quit the BS, Pat. We aren’t buying your crap.

Wonder how you would do if you lost your top 2 scorers and your #6 off the bench. Losing Garner is normal; but have Carr jump ship was devastating. Not to mention your #5 (Watkins) get into legal trouble and it is determined that he has mental problems. He has to take drugs which lessen his stamina and thus playing time.

I think there is a high probability that Pat is back next year because the attitude of the powers that be toward the BB program is one of benign neglect. And based on her history, you do not want Barbour hiring a basketball coach. Maybe we could get Fester to come back on a short term consulting basis.

Holy excuse maker!

You mean like almost every other team in conference, or in America for that matter. Everyone loses players in the same standing that you gave, hell many teams lose more but dont go winless in conference. Anyone else have the NIT MVP come back? What about the conference leader in steals the year before? While Watkins did have issues, he's still here and so is his back up, who played great in the NIT.

The problem is things don’t look any better next year.

True, but in all fairness the university presidents and ADs are always supportive and ‘right behind’ the coaches right up to the day they fire them. ;)

There is no way that he will be back next year, unless he wins about 11 straight games.

By the way, Sandy's history of hiring basketball coaches includes hiring Mike Montgomery.

Always good and fair to give full context of quotes but in this situation I’m not sure it really helps Chambers. He feels “really good” about the staff and what they are doing for the program. He has high expectations.....but they are winless in conference play and just focusing on trying to ‘keep growing’ as a team.

For me, I’d just ignore that quote as typical coach speak for any struggling new coach trying to get their players and system in place (years 1-4). Problem is this is year 8 and suggesting you’re feeling ‘really good’ about anything regarding this program right now is over the top.

I realize he’s trying to remain positive but at this point the sunshine pumping becomes counter productive as being separated from reality.

This. Thanks for perfectly articulating my thoughts

I truly like Pat. And as a former HS/College coach for over 20 years I understand what he is trying to do. I have been with him in person and he really is a good x and o guy. Why I dont see it on the floor is a mystery. But the bottom line is winning games, especially after making big steps and winning the NIT a year ago. People demand that the next step is the NCAA, especially when you have alot coming back...I want the best for him and PSU, but it does come down to winning games.

By the way, Sandy's history of hiring basketball coaches includes hiring Mike Montgomery.

Montgomery fell into her lap. After Ben Braun was fired (actually before since he was a dead coach walking before the end of the season) Barbour's search was going nowhere. Someone in the Cal administration suggested that she call Montgomery who was in semi-retirement working part-time in the Stanford Athletic Department. The rest is history.

Fast forward to Montgomery's retirement years later. Barbour is adamant that Travis DeCuire, Montgomery's top assistant, be elevated to the head coaching job. The powers that be want someone else. Major brouhaha takes place. Sandy is overruled and Cuonzo Martin is hired.

What is he “trying to do” offensively? I can’t figure out our offense. It’s literally the offense that a pickup game at the YMCA runs...go out there and do some stuff and hopefully score

My question for Pat is: Except for a couple exceptional blow outs, HTF do you lose by 1-4 pts to every team in conference regardless of the record, match ups and ranking of the team you play against? Lack of coaching come to mind?

Was DeChellis a great coach when he kept winning every close game? Sure didn’t seem like anyone thought along that line.

It sounds to me like Pat knows he's on the HOT. SEAT. and is campaigning publicly to keep his job.

I'm not quite as experienced as you, but 18 years in HS/D3. So what did you see with PC that makes him a good x's and o's guy? Was it watching practice or a clinic? I just dont see it and that was my best quality as a coach, thats why I was asked to get on the college staff. I see AAU offense from Pat, matter of fact, less than good AAU coaches.

Well many here do talk about how good he was in those situations. He was very good on game day and the day before in making a game plan. He just didnt get off his ass to recruit so he was never going to get higher than middle of the pack.

I agree. Three years ago, I said "I don't think that Chambers is a great game coach, but a lot of talent can hide some of those deficiencies. (I feel the same way about Franklin) Though people don't like to hear it, Ed was a better x's and o's guy from what I've seen (and having Kanaskie sitting next to him helped a lot). ", and was laughed at for it.

Have attended some of his practices and been with hi in person with a coupla other coaches. I really have no idea what they are doing on the floor at times. Drives me nuts.

me too but if they actually run stuff at practice, why the hell does he let them do it like they do it in the games. that makes it even worse to me
