Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

Myles Martin is about to go down to Zack Zavatsky, down 6-3 with :16 left but refs are looking at something. Both guys had huge trouble getting out from underneath.

Zack Zavatsky upends Myles Martin, 6-4, in a 184 semi.

He'll face Gabe Dean in the finals (Dean had a pin in his semi).

agreed. Zavatsky was on bottom for the 2nd, and got ridden by Martin for about 1:30. Martin had trouble getting out from bottom in the 3rd, and Zavatsky ended up with a 10 sec RT advantage, despite what happened to him in the 2nd.

Looks like 6-4 Zavatsky.
Yeah, I typed that with time left. Martin escaped but couldn't get the TD to tie.

Match featured a tactical blunder by Zavatsky that he was able to fix with some timely back points. Up 4-2 and with a lot of riding time to erase, he stayed on top and erased it, but then held on to Martin's legs twice to get hit with a stall warning and then a stall point, respectively, making it 4-3. At that point an escape by Martin sends it to OT if nothing else happens. He should've just let Martin go once he erased the riding time, forcing Martin to get a TD to tie. The backpoints made that moot, but it was still a mistake.

I believe Martin is the 1st returning champ to lose a match this season. (NWCA All-Star matches don't count.)

Noticed in team scores Wis was leading with 100 that is a surprise to me.
Ohio State and VT at 99 looks like Ohio State and Vt for the title team wise.
VT got a blow in semis with a injury so not sure if the guy will wrestle back
so Ohio State should win it.
Minnesota did much better than I thought they would .

Also going on today is UNI Open (on Flo Pro), where Illinois and Mizzou are going. Jaydin Eierman won his 133 bracket, and IMar and Daniel Lewis face off shortly, mat 5.

Interesting scores from IMar today:
Fall 2:54 [A Anaya]
TF 25-10 [M. McDaniel]
TF 30-14 [J Moody]
MD 14-6 [C Flynn]

For Eierman, his win against Brancale was probably more impressive than the finals win over Dylan Duncan, at least on paper. Only saw the latter.

Martinez beat Lewis 7-4. All the offense was by Martinez with 2 TD's a reversal and RT to 3 escapes and penalty for Lewis. Martinez was just too fast and strong on his feet.

Did Richards not wrestle today?

Lewis looked like he really belonged out there with IMar in the first. Was in deep once couldn't convert. Had no answers when IMar got to his legs.

Also it looked like Lewis was going to ride IMar tough like he usually does, and then all of a sudden IMar powerfully turned in and got the reversal.

I should add that in the first period Lewis was countering an IMar shot and almost had him pinned. Indeed he might have if the ref hadn't called a stalemate. The other official seemed to disagree with calling the stalemate at that time--IMar was really close to giving up a fall from neutral like he did to Nolf last year.

Worth mentioning that Lewis was very close to getting a defensive pin on IMar in the first, and was still working toward it when the ref called a stalemate, too early IMO.

A lot of doubters of IMar being champ @ 165 this year. He having RT on Lewis (rather than the reverse) is an early sign that he will have no trouble with the bump up in weight.

I still am a little sad we won't get to see IMar vs Nolf part IV.

I am shocked that Lugo chose down in the third period against Micah with the match tied 3-3 and having over 1 minute in riding time. He was ridden like a pony for two minutes (Lugo is at least six inches shorter) and was almost pinned with a cradle. Lost 7-3. I would have loved to see how he would have done on his feet in the third.

Results, so far:

125: Dance (VT) dec over Rodriguez (tOSU), 4-3

133: Tomasello (tOSU) dec over Micic (Michigan), 3-2

141: McKenna (Stanford) dec over Meredith (Wyoming), 3-1

149: Micah Jordan (tOSU) dec over Lugo (EUP), 7-3

Joey Dance needed a late TD and rideout to tOSU's Rodriguez; maybe that's better news for the Buckeyes than VT that it was that close. Nato edged out Micic but I don't think Nato was ever in trouble.

Micah Jordan has looked great every time I've seen him. I think he has a better chance of holding Zain to a decision than Sorensen.

Agree, think he does much better this year up at 49

Maybe, but beating 2 guys by 5 and 4 respectively (Oliver and Lugo) that Zain absolutely destroyed leads me to believe that the Micah is in for some pain. Sorensen keeps it close because he plays it safe - if Micah wants to mix it up, he could be playing with fire, plus Sorenson is better on bottom.

Rodriguez only needed to stay away to win but he engaged Dance and git taken down with 3 secs left. Excellent match. Rodriguez looks to be the real deal.

Logan Massa beats Isaac Jordan 8-7.

really thought this would be the end for me in the LMS contest. Very impressive, Logan!

then again, I may have only bought a short amount of time. Still need Zavatsky to get past Dean. :(

No way Micah keeps Zain to just a decision. Lugo out wrestled him till he took bottom in third and got caught in a cradle. Zain will be able to turn Micah multiple times.

... but nice last minute and nice finish by Zahid. He's really separated himself from his brother.
He's always been much better in my eyes, Anthony had some good wins for a short period of time but wrestled all of those same guys a second time and lost

Gabe Dean is handling Zavatsky pretty easily. Too bad Bo won't see either of them until March if then.
