Football COACHING CAROUSEL 2022: Paul Chryst out at Wisconsin; Jim Leonhard taking over as interim

Chryst was likely bought out at about 12-14 million. By contract he had about 16 owed.
I wonder if Jim Leonard greased his exit?
I suspect Nebraska was involved, perhaps seeking permission to speak to him and the AD panicked and once they found the money (donors) it was fait accompli.

245 days since PC was given an extension. Now AD says its in the best long term interest of Wisky...LOL
Players seem pretty upset.
Either they were afraid of losing Leonard to Nebraska, a big, big donor put the money on the table or probation is looming.
In any event, nothing gets the inside of the NNNNNCAC thighs moist like a coach getting fired.
Remind anyone else of Miami pushing out Mark Richt to hire wonderkid Manny Diaz? How'd that work out?

This is almost Nebraska-firing-Solich-level crazy. Maybe more, since Solich at least had some skeletons in his closet. May they reap what they sow.

Going to disagree. They had some terrific talent. Great lines and dominant running backs. Mertz was a 5 star QB. Wisconsin is where NFL QB hopes went to die. I mean, they were our b*tch for years and we were not very good. We simply had college level passing attack. They feasted on weak division year after year then get clobbered by Big Ten East. There was no excuse for being this bad. If PSU started 2-3, I would expect CJF to get fired too. UW had three years of horrendous QB play. That is on Chryst. He never thought it necessary to change the scheme. Stuck in his ways.

Mertz is a five star flop. It happens. Chryst was brought in by Alvarez to run the "Wisconsin Scheme."

Rucci portals this spring?
Hah..I was thinking straight to WWE. New tag team - "The Prodigals". They'll be the ones who think they are great, on verge of beating the big boys but always lose in the end. Todd can be their manager.

Maybe IUP has needs.

Illinois and Wazzou are roughly as good as Purdue. The team that Penn State was fortunate to beat.

Add in Ohio State, and that was a very tough opening five games.

Illinois has a good record, but the loss to Indiana speaks volumes. They are playing better under BB, but is this a good team?

Wazzou is another similar type team, but they have a better loss (Oregon). It's going to be a shock if they end up with a good record no?

It's like saying Michigan has played a tough schedule because Maryland is 4-1 and Iowa is 3-2.

Still, it's shocking that 2 underwhelming losses would cost PC this job 240 some odd days after an extension.

I am surprised they fired him mid year. That isn’t how you treat someone. Frost started drinking and being late for meetings so he became a liability. There must be something behind the scenes.

About as well as pushing out Manny Diaz to hire Mario Cristobal has so far - he's .500 despite a lot of excitement. They just lost to 26.5 point underdog Middle Tennessee State by 2 TDs. Looking at the schedule they may have trouble bowling this year.

Worked out well for PSU. 😁

He’s going somewhere and his roots in Wisky are better than Leonhard. So is his record.
Would Texas A&M go after him when they inevitably fire Jimbo?
Is Wisconsin a better job than Auburn? We know Harsin won't survive the year
Right now if I'm Leipold I'm waiting for my dream job--hopefully for Wisconsin that's them.

Auburn has a better recruiting base, but you are Sabans Lil brother and Kirby's the cousin taking the recruits you used to get and everybody in the West is spending like maniacs.

Now Wisconsin has set a standard of 8 wins isn't enough. Adding USC and the likelihood of no divisions makes those West division titles and trips to the CCG look like a distant memory.

Wisky has been successful because they have avoided the East and they had a decent system in place that could get them top 15 but has yet to get them over the hump.

Leonhard might be highly coveted, but can recruit like Kirby? Is he willing to change the culture of the offense? Can he bring in the high end talent to get them over the hump? Look at Venables at OU. Early, but I doubt they expected to be 3-2 through 5 games.

Leipold is a known program builder, but Wisconsin isn't really in disarray. They just seem to want over the hump. And that's ok. But are they willing to go into California, Florida, Texas, wherever and get NIL for the skill players to do that?

15-10 since the start of 2020. Sound familiar...
Good point, if Wisconsin is not satisfied with 7/8 win seasons, what does that say about PSU? I support Franklin and there are a lot of positives I can site, but bottom line, 7/8 win seasons should not be the standard. These next three games are very important for Franklin IMO. Keep in mind we have a new AD.

They pushed out Mark Richt to hire Manny.....see a pattern? Firing coaches is a lot like "self love." It might make you feel good in the short term......but it's not a long term fix.;)

Richt was pushed out for Smart as well--that worked out just fine despite Richt winning 49 games his last 5 years.
