Coaching Carousel: Peters out at Pitt

I thought of Strittmatter too, but then the nagging question comes up: he's gotta be making some pretty good money from Young Guns, on top of being an assistant at UPJ, right? With stability and a lot fewer headaches of being a D1 head coach.
No doubt money and autonomy are key issues for Stritt - I wonder if Jeff Buxton would be interested in Pitt. A Hughes/Buxton combo would be interesting - would also require serious cash.

I was going to suggest that for a move to be made mid season means something happened between the coach and the school. I guess the referenced article makes things a bit clearer.

Anyone ever get to the bottom of the Drew Pariano firing last year? I haven't heard his name since, but he was alleged to have good recruiting skills...

This is like Iowa fans throwing out David Taylor's name. One of the last things Pitt needs is someone with no experience as a head coach or top assistant.

Their problems are basically the trifecta:
1. Poor recruiting -- Virginia and VT have done a better job of recruiting PA.
2. Poor development -- they guys they have gotten haven't done well. Morelli has developed the best, by leaving.
3. Discipline and retention -- kicked Racciato off the team last year. Wiercioch left school this year. Bright ... some other issues ...

Also, the "Pitt Wrestling Club" is not an RTC. That needs to change.

What they need is either a top assistant who runs an RTC (like Rosselli last year) or a successful head coach at an under-funded school (Flynn, Stutzman, Moore, etc.). Must have good connections in PA, particularly the western half of the state. And must coach a more aggressive style.

Chances of them hitting on all of those criteria? Well, they're Pitt ...
If Taylor was not still competing I would think Taylor would be worth the risk.
1 name recognition
2 attacking style almost certainly going to be taught
3 Cael available for advice and direction
4 do not know if a RTC in the middle of State College and Columbus is probable, but again with assistance from Cael as well as alum who if sought out could be generous with financial support - might be doable.

Inexperienced or not. Metcalf and Taylor would be much better than Peters or whoever Pitt finally does choose.

Of course it is Pitt athletics. By definition they will screw it up.

Pitt admin is too cheap and short-sighted to hire a highly qualified coach.

Also remember, they don't even had an AD now. Prior AD split for Oregon State a few weeks ago.

I think whoever takes over at Pitt has to do a better job of recognizing one's character. If you look at Penn State and Lehigh ,very few problems with the current coaches recruits. I believe Roth was already on board before Sanderson arrived when he started his tree trimming service. Certain wrestlers tend to have self destructive tendencies. Just do a Google search on Jack Cuvo to read about crazy. Another wrestler that benefited from getting away from his hometown was Oliver, if he would of stayed near Easton he could of ended up in trouble like his brother. I really doubt Buxton would have interest. I know he has completely retired from Blair, he had continued teaching for a couple of years after he quit coaching.

Provides some information, but not the whole story.

I think we can fill in the blanks.

Three wrestlers order prostitutes probably off of Craigslist. They have $300 in cash to pay them but they end up getting robbed when the hookers show up with their pimp. Someone here the commotion and calls the cops. They decline to press charges because they were soliciting a hooker. The dumb coach instead of notifying the administration what happens decides to handle it himself. The administration finds out fires coach and blackmails, Ooops I mean has the coach and players sign a non disclosure agreements to cover the truth up. The coach goes along so he doesn't lose a severance package and the wrestlera agree to keep their scholarships.
