Who knows the rule regarding coin flip as to the team that gets to selects which direction they want to go in the 3rd quarter? The reason I ask is that weather being a non-factor I think tOSU going into the south end zone in the 4th qtr on Sept 29th would make it much more difficult if they would need a TD to win or tie.

The team that wins the toss can choose to Receive, Kick, or defer to the 2nd half.

If the team elects to Receive the other team can choose which endzone to defend (Often times based on the wind direction).

If the team defers, then the other team can choose to kick or receive or endzone to defend, (usually will receive because then they may have to Kick-Off both halves).

It's rare but there are times when a team defers to the second half and then they will pick which endzone to defend because of the wind or because of what you are suggesting with the student section and noise.

In the Pitt game, I believe they wanted to defer (so they would Kick-Off) but their captain said they wanted to Kick. Wrong Choice because now they would have to kick-off both halves. (If I remember correctly).

Which someone posted before the video of the Pitt-PSU game when Millen and Clark were captains in street clothes and the Pitt captain couldn't figure out which to choose.

Coaches always have a meeting with the captains after the pre-game warm-ups to discuss the coin toss. They usually designate the one captain that understands the decisions (if this ....than that) stuff and tells the other to keep their mouths shut.

Tongue tied and twisted, just an earth bound misfit, I

Pitt elected to receive, went 3 and out, and the rest is history.

'Kick' is not an option. You can receive, defer or choose a side

If you 'defer', the choice 'kick' or 'receive' goes to the other team. And if the other team chooses to 'kick' then you can start both halves with the ball

kick is an option. You win, do you want to defer? No, then you have a choice of kicking, receiving or defending a goal.

Nope, 'defer' means defer your choice to the second half. The losing team then makes a decision

that's what I said, you win the toss, the ref ask, would like to defer? you say no I do not want to defer my choice, so then you have 3 options, you can kick off, you can receive, or you can defend a goal.

The ref asks 'what is your choice' not 'would you like to defer'

Rule 4, Section 2, Article 2: Not more than three minutes before the kickoff of the first half, the Referee, in the presence of both team’s captains (limit of six per team, all of whom must be uniformed members of the Active List) shall toss a coin at the center of the field. Prior to the Referee’s toss, the call of “heads” or “tails” must be made by the captain of the visiting team, or by the captain designated by the Referee if there is no home team. Unless the winner of the toss defers his choice to the second half, he must choose one of two privileges, and the loser is given the other. The two privileges are:

(a) The opportunity to receive the kickoff, or to kick off; or

(b) The choice of goal his team will defend

What does that mean from a practical standpoint?

Yes. You can choose to kick. It would be really stupid, but it has been done.
it would not surprise me that Illinois chooses this option this week. Then as Kent and App state before them , kick on sides and get the ball!
