by Brewers in 1st. Oh, I forgot. Divisional play. Not important.

It'd be nice to see this team not shit the bed against the Brewers & Reds for just one damn series this year. Those 2 teams will be why the Cards will win the division.

Well, it does look like my dream of 1st place on Labor Day won't happen but fortunately with our game against Temple looming, it doesn't really bother me. We'll make the playoffs and then the fun will begin. I can live with that.

I just heard a statistic that blew me away. The Pirates lead the league in allowing stolen bases @ 120. By comparison the Cardinals have allowed 40. Who's supposed to be teaching these pitchers how to hold runners? Again, those pesky fundamentals.

Unfortunately for me, Fairgambit, the Bucs are now my primary team. Still will follow PSU, but don't have the same anticipation/excitement as in the past, for reasons we've repeatedly discussed.

It also doesn't help when your catchers have a bunch of throwing errors. More than once a runner has gone from first to third that way.

Agree, but if the pitchers would hold runners you wouldn't see that stuff as much.

Largely on the pitchers. Morton might as well just pitch from the wind up with men on base......SERIOUSLY.

Anyone who wants a SB just takes it anyway.....it takes him forever to get the ball home. Several times in recent weeks the catcher doesn't even throw down (which is the smart move).
Charlie should just forget the guys on base, concede the SB, allow the infielders to stay in position, and have Charlie work from the windup.

When Charlie is pitching from the windup........BA Against .228 OPS .656
In others words, from the windup he's a damn good pitcher. (from the windup, his numbers are better than Cole's....and every other starter on the team except for Liriano)

From the stretch.......BA Against .299 OPS .821
In other words, from the stretch he gets lit up like a Christmas tree. (from the stretch, his numbers are - by far - the worst of any starter)

Its why Charlie ALWAYS seems to have that ONE HORRID INNING PER START. Once guys get on base his effectiveness goes down the toilet. Its not like its some COINCIDENCE why this always happens to Charlie.
If it causes you to not be able to get the hitter out.....what's the point of making the lame attempt to hold runners on (which he doesn't do anyway)

Both sets of stats over roughly 200 at bats each.

What's the point?? He never holds a guy on anyway. Everyone steals at will.

Here is the grand total of base runners who have been thrown out attempting to steal against Morton.............ZERO. None. All season

Last 5 games alone - in games Morton started, the opposition is 13 for 13 on steals. (some of those may have been after Morton left the game).

Point being.....EVERYONE knows they can steal whenever they want anyway.......why have your pitcher go from "Ace" numbers (from the windup) to AAAA pitcher numbers (from the stretch) for NO BENEFIT?

Don't these MLB teams have "stats guys"?

Can no one in the professional coaching position think outside the box?

I understand & I can't blame you, but the Bucs will be OK. There is no way they miss they playoffs and then I like our chances.

Well, they picked a nice time to start jakin' it. Last two games they haven't even made an effort. Rockies and Brewers? Come on.

Something about Marte that's hard to take. His cocky body language is even more irritating when he's doing absolutely nothing.

Tonight I really expected a win, so this is disappointing and I agree, the last 2 games they played like crap, but all year I just wanted them to make the playoffs and they will. Perhaps I put too much stock in the Giants winning the World Series last year as a W/C, but I think the Bucs can do it too.

It's also very possible that they lose in a one game layoff with the Cubs at home (similar to last year)...such is it when you don't win the Division...hopefully they can pass the Cards - unlikely but still possible...

Awful lot of complaining about the 2nd or 3rd best teaming baseball!
True.

But there are always things you can improve on....and for a team as talent rich as this one is - they have some GLARING FUNDEMENTAL FLAWS!

You only get better by identifying your weaknesses and working to mitigate them.
When it is CRYSTAL clear why a pitcher struggles, and the solution is OBVIOUS.....and you keep doing the same things that take away from your effectiveness......its just stupid (and frustrating to watch).

Not that anything the "peanut gallery" says will bring about that change....but part of sports "fandom" is talking about the team's situation - both good and bad.

They'll have the Wild Card at home and last year's experience will help. Anything can happen, but I think this is our year.

Then we have to face Madison B or Arietta in a one-game series. Play them 2 out of 3 I like our chances.

From where I sit, all current baseball teams lack in the basic fundamentals...long gone are the days of the fundamentally sound 1970's Orioles or the Pete Rose lead Reds...and I doubt this will change...baseball is a (slowly) dying sport...the best of the best are going to other sports...and what is left is mostly a bunch of prima donnas with guaranteed contracts and little motivation to learn the fundamentals...

I think the Cards do the fundamentals and the little things so well. Hit behind the runner, chip away at leads, advance base runners 90 feet at a time, play good defense, don't beat yourself and give the other team more than 27 outs, etc.

Point taken - they are the best of today with all that...but pale compared to the Reds/Os of the 1970s...

Exactly, which is why despite all of the injuries they are basically cruising to a division title. Pirates have made a couple of minor runs at them, but they've really not been threatened.

Yep. The Cards play fundamental baseball. Sadly some of their fans are fundamental aholes and that detracts from the team.
