Collegian Article

This article is all over the place. I have no idea what the author is attempting to say.

The main point that I get is that the NLWC is a great place for an elite wrestler to train.

It’s an arms race and has been since Cael arrived. The problem was nobody realized it until PSU was light years ahead in their vision and strategy. That’s what hiring Cael did because he brought that with him.

Now others are trying to catch up and accusing PSU of having an unfair advantage. Wrong! They’re just five years ahead of everybody else and they have their on-mat success to continue promoting what they do.... train to win and enjoy doing it!

Up until 2009, the sport and it’s success was deeply rooted in the Midwest with Oklahoma and Iowa teams winning 80+% of the team championships.

Now it has shifted to the east with PSU, O$U, and Cornell whooping on the perennial Midwest powers. And it will not subside anytime soon.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

The article seems to say that the giant that is the NLWC was in the works as Rich Lorenzo's brainchild before Cael's arrival and that Cael took it up several notches.

This article appeared in the glossy alumni magazine that gets published quarterly? I think. If you keep that in mind the piece makes a bit more sense, as it targets both a particular (Penn State alums) and broad (non wrestling fans) audience.

What I take away from the article is that the writer, as a student/part of the university, there is no appreciation or pride in what has been accomplished, but a rather negative slant.

I don't think the young man should be writing articles to show how proud he is of the wrestling program. He should be asking tough questions. The problem is, I think he missed his mark. He should start by telling us who he thinks this might be "unfair" to. Maryland wrestling is probably disadvantaged relative to Penn State wrestling in recruiting because of the success of the NLWC. That doesn't make it "unfair." There's no regulation limiting Maryland's ability to build a similar RTC program.

He also might want to develop a deeper understanding of the financial data he's looking at ... Why is he using net assets? Wouldn't it be more telling to compare spending? Ben Askren mentioned on the last FRL that the NLWC is paying resident athletes $60K a year. How much is the RTC at Ohio State paying? Or Nebraska? If it's a lot less than $60K a year, wouldn't Kyle Snyder and their other elite athletes be looking to relocate to the NLWC?

You don't think that he should be Proud of what the school he goes to has accomplished?

I think it was in the daily newspaper. Did it run in an alumni magazine first?

The Collegian is no longer a daily newspaper, just M,W, & F. Not all of their online content gets printed in their paper version. This article was printed in today's issue.

I think the NLWC was a hope and dream of Lorenzo's. Cael coming to PSU made the dream possible and helped attract some bid donations hence the very healthy balance sheet. Cael is the attraction for the NLWC and not the balance sheet....every other RTC in the country can pay wrestlers if they can raise the funds. Something tells me there are plenty of wealthy Iowa and Ohio State wrestling fans that just have not chosen to put their money in the Ohio RTC or Hawkeye Wrestling Club.

Everything these days needs to be judged by "fairness". If the opportunity to create what the NLWC has didn't exist elsewhere, because of regulation, that would be unfair. Just because someone had this idea and implemented it, doesn't make it unfair. Advantageous? Yes. Unfair? No.

Well the quality of your average Pennsylvania High School Wrestler versus your average Maryland High School Wrestler is a far bigger disadvantage for the University of Maryland Wrestling Team versus The Pennsylvania State University Wrestling Team than what the writer is writing about.....is that "fair"??? LMFAO. I have no idea if it's "fair", but it is absolute REALITY!

We would make the other teams feel better by losing, so that is only fair.

I get nauseous typing that current mindset (of some); my forebears would have thrown such people out of the country.

feelings over thinking; today's america.
