Comedians

I remember that I went to go see Gallagher at the Akron Civic Theater (that was under ownership and management of a female friend). The guy was really funny and killed it. (why doesn't good and food rhyme?) . Later, I had dinner with the lady and she said he was a real a-hole. If you've seen him, the end of his act was him smashing various things with a large mallet. The Theater was an old ornate thing that had its heyday in the 50's. They were very protective of their seats and stuff. When Gallagher got some limitations put on him before the show, he threw a fit and demanded to see the manager. When she walked up to meet him, he said "No wonder, a girl!" and demanded to see the owner. When she said she was the owner, he threw a fit. She finally said that these are the terms of the theater and they are prepared to cancel the show. He acquiesced, complaining the whole time, and just killed it.

I saw him (or his brother, I don't know which) at the Days Inn Penn State back in the late 90s

Current comedians are lazy. Carlin would work for 6 months to perfect a 45 minute routine. Every word was carefully scripted and well thought out. Dangerfield was the same way. Carson spent hours and hours every day on his 7-minute monologue. Today the comedians stand up and criticize politicians in juvenile ways or just drop f-bombs. No creativity. No struggle and effort. Just lazy money hungry sluggards.

That’s just a wholly inaccurate statement of today’s comedians. They’re grinding it out at clubs working on material for a year or more before they put it into a special on Netflix, HBO, etc. I have no clue what makes you think that’s not the case, but I’ve listened to plenty of interviews from guys like Bill Burr talking about how long they work on testing the exact language, timing, delivery in short 15 minute sets at clubs before they actually put it all together into a show. Then once they have the special, they toss it all and start over. That’s why they’re only putting out 1 special every 18 months or so.

Sara Silverman
Amy Schumer
Tina Fey
Wanda Sikes

My funny women 4 some.

Unfunny woman: Paula Poundstone

I'll give you 3 out of those 4 being funny.

Mitch Hedberg

Agree he was pretty funny. Never saw him but listened to him on XM a lot. I couldn’t tell if he was naturally nervous or if that was just his act

Mitch was terrified to be on stage, that's why he wore the glasses. It likely lead to his drug abuse too.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are just not funny. (I do realize you didn't mention Amy)

Tig Notaro might have Paula Poundstone beat. There is a clip with Artie Lange discussing her. Funny as hell.

Edit: the clip from Artie Lange was about Ellen Degeneres not being funny. Awesome.

Past:
Richard Jeni
Mort Sahl

Present:
Jim Jeffries

Funny you mention Jeni. His real name was Colangelo and he grew up down the block from me, just a year older. We who knew him couldn't believe how big he made it. He was never funny as a kid, pretty much an asshole. Rumor in Brooklyn was that "the right people" had his contract and promoted him, but he always was indebted.....
Agree on Jeffries for today's comics. I'd add Gary Gulman and Jim Norton
Richard Lewis and Steven Wright are hysterical
To me tho, the old guard can't be beat. Dangerfield, Carson, Winters, Rickles, Pat Cooper, Red Skelton....endless list

One I haven’t seen mentioned is John Candy. The guy still cracks me up whenever one of his movies is on.

As far as stand up goes, I think Dave Chappelle is brilliant at combining social commentary with insightful humor. The guy is a genius.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Joe Rogan. I'm also surprised that only a couple people mentioned Bill Burr. He is really good. If you haven't heard him just google and watch. Also, as some have mentioned, of course Norm MacDonald is good.

W. C.Fields
Groucho Marx
Jack Benny
Hillary Clinton
Steve Martin
Red Skelton, Marx Brothers and more I can't think of right now. I do enjoy Norm McDonald, I enjoy dry humor. Norm is the king.

Many of the current, political and gross sex attempted humorists miss the mark. Some of it is taste and some generational but much of it isn't funny at all and I think they know it so it's embellished with trash to cover the unfunny content. Watch what you enjoy but don't laugh just because everyone else is laughing, laugh because its funny.

Mulaney has been mentioned several times, and I have to agree - if you haven’t heard his stuff, check him out (currently has 3 specials on Netflix). Another current comedian I like is Gary Gullman - very funny former TE at Boston College.

Saw Gullman a few months ago. He was fantastic. Head hurt from laughing so much. Def worth seeing

I've been blessed to see some fantastic stand up comedians:
Seinfeld
Bob newhart
Kevin james
Ray romano
Louie Anderson
Brian Regan
Jim gaffigan
Jon pinette
George Carlin
George Wallace
Bruce baum
Tom papa
Gabriel Iglesias

I know that I'm missing a few more, but I'm not going to spend all day recalling them. Most were terrific. The worst was carlin. It was painfully unfunny. Louie Anderson did a show in Harrisburg during filming of a reality diving show. Club was on the 3rd floor with no elevator. Louie kept riffing off the cuff about climbing the steps throughout the show and how he thought his manager was "in on it".

I think the best out there today is a toss up between Burr and Gaffigan. Honorable mention to Brian Regan. I saw McDonald and Lovitz too. Good comedians but I they don't put as much into it as the other guys. Loved Hedberg and Wright too. But the best all time in my book is still Eddie Murphy.

The animal house thread got me thinking . .Didn't want to hijack so I'm starting this .
Will farrel. ...Hilarious . John C. Rilley equally as hilarious if in the right part. Stepbrothers was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while .
Dave Chapelle. Probably the funniest stand up comic since Eddie Murphy. I like a total of three stand ups. . Murphy, Chapelle and Eddie Izzard.
Kris kattan.. That shit he used to do on SNL as kippy strug was gold.
And Danny McBride. Has to be hands down the funniest guy on TV today.
And I don't find chicks funny at all. .Ever.
Regarding your comment about "chicks", OK, misogynistic Neanderthal.

Yep , that's me .which brings me to my point in the animal house thread. literally EVERYTHING offends people these days.what are you offended by ? That I called them "chicks " or that I said they're not funny. Let me know
Which one you're outraged about .

Lisa Lampanelli is pretty funny, IMO. Brutal, but funny.

She's able to rag on herself much like Rodney used to. Tons of talented female comedians. I saw one just last week on Netflix that was hysterical...Eliza or something...her special just came out and she was brutally honest. She had my wife and I both laughing. Jim Jeffries kills me and tends to offend everyone....but normal people realize it's a comedy act.
