I've been away from home a lot lately and using my laptop exclusively. Got home last night and started my desktop and am unable to log in. The wireless mouse works, but the keyboard does not. I assumed it was the keyboard, but when I switch to the onscreen keyboard, that doesn't work either.

I have no idea what's going on with it, any help would be appreciated. The good news is anything I need is also on the laptop, but I really prefer the desktop at home.

Is the keyboard wireless? What kind of PC?

yes, keyboard and mouse are wireless- Logitech- they work thru a single usb device (the mouse is working)

PC is a Dell, several years old, but works fine- or did last time it was used

What is the OS?

Re-start the PC.

I'm not a 'computer guy' per se, but did find a lot of people seem to be having the same issue as you. Below is a link to potential solutions - let me know how it goes (also assume you did a bit of research before posting, so sorry if this isn't helpful....).

thanks- I did go through that and ease of access settings were all correct, but since I can't log in, I can't get to any settings beyond that. I've disconnected and reconnected the usb device and even changed batteries in the keyboard- the PC just doesn't see the keyboard- even the on screen one

Weird. I’m out of ideas sadly.

Sorry for stating the obvious but people should never run a wireless keyboard without a backup wired keyboard because of exactly this problem. It could be a USB hardware issue or a USB driver issue or a USB/logitech driver issue but you can't diagnose it without a working keyboard. Same thing with bluetooth keyboards. Something will eventually go wrong and you are up a creek without a paddle. (I would also keep a simple standalone wireless mouse because those integrated keyboard/mouse adapters sometimes fail)

I do wired keyboard and I still like to keep a spare in the house because stuff happens, dust, worn out components, a little spill or food.

The more advanced the hardware, usually the higher frequency of failures so it's good to plan for failures.

A basic USB keyboard is $15, a basic USB mouse is $10. Just keep em in your basement.

me too, but thanks for trying
if I could get to the start button, I think I could fix it, but I can't get there without logging in
First thing I'd do is make sure the batteries in the keyboard are charged (or new, if they are not rechargeable). It is very likely your keyboard isn't working but the PC is fine.

You can go into settings, bluetooth, and see if it is registered.

If that doesn't do it, try to plug in a wired PC keyboard (always keep one as a spare). You can also hook your wireless keyboard to your laptop to assure it is working correctly.

If that doesn't work, the idea is to begin to eliminate what IS working.

Power off your PC by holding the Power Button on the PC for 10 seconds or so. Count to 10 dissipate residual charge. Power on the PC.

If everything OK, fine otherwise get yourself a wired keyboard and mouse to further troubleshoot.

I've discovered that the PC will accept numeric inputs from either the wireless or the on-screen keyboards, but will not accept alpha inputs from either- so it's not the keyboards, it's something with the PC (or windows) but I can't get to settings because I can't log in

Try spilling a drink on the keyboard, maybe you can shock the hell out of it.

1300 - sorry for your problem, hope someone / somehow can figure this out for you.

If that's the case, it is probably software related. So I'd try to reboot from a previous date (potentially loosing anything you did from that date until today) try to reboot in "safe mode" and see what happens. If you can reboot in safe mode, and not have the problem, it is probably virus related.

I am assuming you already reinstalled the driver somebody recommended above. If not, do that first.

If your keyboard driver has developed a fault, your keyboardmay stop working. To fix it: 1) Right-click the Start button, then click Device Manager. 2) Expand Keyboards then right-click Standard PS/2 Keyboard and click Uninstall.
Also, check out this youtube.

I suspect that might work- except that you can't get to the start button without logging in and you can't log in without a working keyboard

I'm stuck in a Catch-22 here.

Topo Gigio played a pretty mean keyboard.

You have a mouse. If there's a way to copy letters one by one to your login then do that.

Or switch accounts if possible... maybe one doesn't require the password.

I would power off the keyboard... It may have a key stuck down which is causing the problems.

That would be my suggestion as well.

Re-start your PC in safe mode. Once you are in safe mode, hit window+r and type netplwiz. A window will appear and select option to log in without password.
Re-start your PC.
