Confirmed: Removed from roster, Gavin Teasdale puts freshman year on hold

Mature move. Don't waste a second of your college experience if you can't live it to the best of your abilities, for whatever reason or circumstance. I never see a problem with stepping back and resetting. Rarely, if ever, does it cause any harm and hopefully your next move feels even more committed. Best of luck Gavin.

I hope it ends up being a good thing. It sure seems like the past 12-18 months have been more confusing and less productive for the young man than the years that preceding them. Maybe a good reset, clear the head and rediscover his love for wrestling. Or decide to go other directions in his life.

Hi Tim, should this thread and your article be entitled, “... Puts Semester On Hold”?
I realize that literally, “Puts Freshman Year On Hold” is also correct, because he can resume the freshman year in January, but talking about the year may give the wrong impression.

You serious Clark?

How about you change your screen name as welding dogs gives my dogs the wrong impression and is offensive to them.

Obviously, his eligibility clock started when he enrolled, so he's using his first of five available years. Still plenty of time for him to make an impact at Penn State or elsewhere.

Bummed about this.. obviously for the kid and wish him the best.. Hope we still get a chance to see him in the B/W .. college without athletics is a lot for some kids to handle.. lots going on for the first time for them... add in the demands of D 1 athletics and I just can't imagine the stain.. Hope it all works out for him in the long run..

This has a good news/bad news feel for me.

Bad news - Flo's rumors had merit and Gavin is dealing with off the mat problems.

Good news - There appears to be a plan moving forward, and Flo's "the ship has sailed" comment might be an exaggeration.

Does missing a semester impact his ability to redshirt 2018-19, provided he's enrolled in good standing come spring semester? Just curious.

I think he will have effectively redshirted by the end of the year. You get 5 years to wrestle 4. This year is the first year since he started his clock. So he has 4 more after this. Whether it's officially a redshirt or not, I don't know but it's going to work out the same. That's the way I understand it.

No, clock started the moment he enrolled full time. HOWEVER, there is five-year rule waiver language in the rulebook that allows the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, or its designate, to reinstate a year. Mostly, it refers to circumstances beyond the control of the student-athlete...and it does mention incapacitating circumstances. Won't judge or say whether any of this applies, as honestly I'm unaware of any comparable cases.

He may be able to apply for another year, depending upon why he is leaving. Especially considering the NCAA seems to have relaxed the rules for getting another year.

Either way, hope he gets well. Regardless if he puts on a singlet for PSU or another school or hangs it up altogether.

wise words. He has 70 more years of life. He should be in no rush.

Me, they're already shoveling dirt at my feet...

Starting a new thread here, so we can get past the unsubstantiated rumors. A quick article with Gavin's tweet and a statement from the team at the link. Please stay sensitive to the young man and his family with your responses

Wrestling: Gavin Teasdale puts freshman year on hold
Good for him. If him and his family are doing when they believe is best for him, then so be it. Wish him nothing but the best and would love to see him back on campus and with the wrestling program in the future.

The Gophers could use a 133 lber next year. I'm sure you'd fit right in.
